Altrincham FC First Team / 130 years!
« on: September 20, 2021, 09:23:59 PM »
It has occurred to me that this year marks the 130th anniversary of the founding of our predecessors Rigby Memorial (with never a season missed, I believe). Not as old as our venerable opponents on Saturday, but nonetheless a grand old age. With everything else that's been going on, it seems to have been somewhat overlooked. Would it be worth doing something in the programme at some point? And how much is known about these early days? Do we know where they played, or the date they were founded, or any of the players? And what sort of teams would they have played? And was there any other team in the area before 1891?

I think the hundredth anniversary of Altrincham's first win over a football league is also coming up soon (against Tranmere Rovers in the 4th or 5th qualifying round?).

I would be prepared to use a contactless debit card for entry, something I have often done at the beer bar (now in the fan zone), and which I assume would allow faster entry similar to the ticketing system. I still think a cash option should be available if possible though. I know there are people who prefer to pay with cash as a matter of principle, for example. However, I rarely use a printer and don't have a smart phone, so it would mean quite a lot of hassle for me personally under the current ticketing system. Is the club considering a bank card payment option (on the turnstiles I mean)?
Maybe there should just be a turnstile for you, equipped to support every type of ticket arrangement depending on your whim on the day?

Very funny, but hardly helpful. I suppose I could always do something else with my time if it came to it. Believe it or not, for various reasons not everyone carries a working smart phone around with them all the time, and this is likely to remain the case.

When are Worcester getting their own ground? They should be at least in the NLN really. They used to be one of the biggest APL clubs in the 80's.

That's longer than I thought to be fair, and probably longer than I would take, but how long would it take me to buy a ticket and get entry without a smart phone (assuming this is possible)?

We will have, they've had a poor start!

Moreover, Stockport lost again. I thought they'd got away with getting rid of Jim Gannon, but I'm beginning to wonder.

And in other news, Banks O'Dee beat Turriff United 1-0 in the Scottish Cup (according to "Ceefax" this is of more interest than York City in the FA Cup). Hopefully their ball didn't end up in Scandinavia again! At least they have a chance of getting promoted to the Highland league now, and potentially playing Alty - if they are still inviting NL teams into that Scottish league cup competition.

1 cash payment in 15 seconds average? Some people must be taking ages!

Speaking for myself, I'm just generally not organised or motivated. :)

I remember last season when I had to start my "journey" to the page for the online coverage earlier than I'd sometimes left to watch the match live!

Non Altrincham FC Talk / Vaccine passports for Wales from October!
« on: September 18, 2021, 08:26:44 PM »
So far as I can tell, it won't affect us for now unless we draw a Welsh team away in the third round of the FA Cup.

Still, it seems likely that the "English" Government's plan B will be used at some point, with "Vaxports" an option which may then be used. If the same criteria were used as in Wales, the Stockport match at home, and certain away matches could potentially be affected.

Kazakhstan were actually on tv last night, at Llanelli for some reason (I thought it was Wrexham at first).

I wondered if Rachel Rowe was any relation to the former Fylde player.

Another 'country' on today (not the film), Jersey Bulls in the FA cup. I seem to remember they've been having issues playing their matches. Now that would be a trek if we got them away. Not likely though, at least for this season, they seem to have had a poor start (though I think they previously had an exceptional promotion season).

Cash handed from one person to another carries germs. It’s fine that some people can only use cash, but it’s on its way out, with good reason.

Cashless is safer. Plain fact.

Here’s a link for you, there are hundreds though:

My bottom line is that we should give people the choice of what they want to do so far as possible - which to be fair we are doing, so it's fine.
I heard that most bank notes have traces of drugs on them. And then there's train seats...

In any case, excessive sanitation also carries health risks; and there's issues with a cashless society. But that's another story..

Or Saturday week? :)

Though come to think of it, I don't see how it could be then.

I have my doubts. I'm pretty sure it would have been a different crowd against Dover if you had to get tickets in advance. I seem to remember going to Southport (and probably other places - King's Lynn?) and you had to find a ticket office, queue up for a ticket, and then queue up again to get in, and I thought, this is a right hassle. And if you do it by phone and have to spend time giving your details, or do it over the internet and likewise give your details plus spend several minutes turning a computer on, it's still a hassle compared to a couple of seconds to pay on the gate after deciding at a quarter to three that one fancies going. The whole point of non-league football is it's supposed to be free of the hassle of watching big clubs. This is something new in my my time watching Alty (apart from the occasional game, as indicated), and it's the first few games of this new situation. What's the big rush to move on?

As I say, I have no problem with other people doing this, and the Dover match was no problem, but one has to recognise that everyone's situation is different and ideally try and cater for this so far as possible, and I personally will in general not go to away matches if I can't pay on the day, or for that matter if I can't go on standing terraces. My money, my choice.

Darlington are still paying rent aren't they? They could end up going down at this rate. Have they any plans to get their own ground? Is moving back to that "white elephant" stadium at all likely, or is that never going to happen now? (And by the way, what did happen to Chris Senior? :) )

« on: September 16, 2021, 07:34:22 AM »
All in all, I think selling out against Notts County is a nice "problem" to have!

Now I've nothing against tickets, but personally I don't have (or want) a smart phone, and I sometimes don't know if I'll be attending a game until the day of the match, so I will be hoping for a pay on the day option.

All at Chesterfield? Shows what we're up against!

I'm not saying we can't do it over the next few years, but make no mistake, if we do get promotion, or even finish top 7, it's a massive achievement.
