Sad if he does go of course, but perhaps inevitable - though let's wait and see, remember the odds being given on Phil Parkinson going to Notts? I seem to remember our other most exciting winger Paul Showler ending up at Bradford City who in 1992 were a similar proposition to the Chesterfield of today.

Purely conjecture, and we may never know the actual price if he does go, but didn't Wrexham sign a "League One" standard player for 300k? Even with only half a season left on his contract, surely Colclough could be worth a six figure fee (and sell-on clause). With the setup we have now, I am pretty certain there will be people they can bring in who will do a good job.

The team we had in December was possibly good enough to challenge for the play-offs, and credit to the management and staff for achieving this, but it was never the expectation that we would challenge for the play-offs this season - we are apparently in year two of a five year plan. I remain convinced that we will stay up this season however this plays out, which is surely the main priority. If  we are in a strong financial position, we will have the opportunity to improve again next season.

Yes, it must have been about 1999 he signed, I saw him at the Crabble that season I think (1999-2000) (as related n the short-lived Moss Lane Mouth - the days before wide-spread (anti-?)social media (although there was the mailing list)!. Perhaps it was at Connah's Quay United I saw him in a friendly. Didn't he come from a Welsh club too?

We should have stayed up that season but Brendan Burke and Stuart Coburn got injured as I recall, and the rest is history - though whether staying up would have made any difference to what happened next (re. debt etc.) I don't know.

Speaking of Congleton, can anyone confirm if a young Kevin Ellison played for us there in a friendly? I think it would have been about the right time. Astonishing to think he's still playing now (for Liverpool, last I heard).

Crewe would appear to be our biggest threat, I remember their young players properly taking us to task in a friendly four or five years ago. However the newly formed Macclesfield club are not to be underestimated, and II'm sure they'll be taking it seriously, certainly if they play us.

4,500 according to MOTD. I thought they might bring more to be honest. Still, maybe if they get a big tie in the next round...

I wonder if they'll play any big names on Friday?

Grimsby Town......classic quiz question from my yoof

Confusingly there is now a Grimsby Borough, plus Cleethorpes Town, who have been quite successful in recent years (including a certain Vase final). I don't know where they play though.

Did anyone mention Port Vale?

It’s a different Scottish cup, it’s the tunnocks shield or whatever it’s called. Their equivalent of the freight rover trophy. I’d still love to be in it though

To clarify, this is the Scottish PFL Challenge Cup, currently known as the Tunnock's Challenge Cup. As I understand, it currently involves Scottish Football League (but not SPL) teams, the Highland and Lowland League champions, and a small number of teams from Wales and Northern Ireland. Hopefully from next season there will be NL involvement again too, with the participant likely to be the highest team not promoted and prepared to enter the competition, suggesting we would have to finish third, or fourth if one team turned down entry. There is also the Scottish FA Challenge Cup, equivalent to its English namesake, and a competition for all SPL and SFL teams.

In England, there was the Full Members Cup for first and second division teams (who had enhanced voting rights in the reelection days, hence the 1980 debacle), and the Associate Members Cup for teams in the new-fangled third and fourth divisions. I don't know if the name is still used at all or when it was abandoned if not, thoughthe competition has been known by the sponsor's name for quite a long time.

I wouldn't count on a large contingent eager to celebrate their cup success, recalling the Cheshire cup match with Caernarfon after the Spurs match! Still, I suspect it could be easily 1,000. The more interesting question is, what will we do for the league match? I think they could bring well over 2,000 for that, and if part of the pop side is closed, could be enough to fill that stand plus the Chequers End. Am I right in thinking our capacity is currently set at 5,000, and is this likely to change?

Just to put the result into some perspective, Birmingham's results in the runup to the match were as follows

December 26 (h) L Nottingham Forest 0-1
December 28 (a) D Manchester City 1-1
January 1      (a) L Manchester United 0-1
January 11    (h) L Ipswich Town 0-1

After the tie they lost again to Everton before finally winning against Oxford United (who only finished 3 points below City) on February 1st. On the night, they had David "Seasman" and Julian Dicks (his actual name!) in the team. So they were poor but not hopeless. Though it was not long until they were in division three.

The crowd that night of 6,636 was only a few hundred more than the famous Frickley-Rotherham tie in the same round - Frickley finished second that season.

Ah, "dancing in the streets of Raith"!

There's also Formartine United and my former local team Banks O'Dee. Though to be fair England has the (defunct) Rossendale United and Queens Park Rangers. And there was  a "team" called the Argonauts who attempted to join the Football League...

And potential entry to the Scottish Challenge Cup (as long as we don't win the play-offs), and potentially a trip to the Dung Heap if Aberdeen go down, though I'd settle for Cove Rangers or indeed Brora Rangers. Happy days!

And about time for a unique result - the only non-league team to beat a first division team in the Cup away from home coming from behind since the third division was formed, the result also allegedly playing a part in the end of the election system!

Incidentally, is the full match footage released on DVD some years ago? And could some sort of commentary talking people through the match be dubbed onto it (with added interviews etc.? Something I'd pay good money for!

I might add that Peter Hennerley (God rest him) related how he was working in Liverpool at the time, and after the match when he went back to work was just punching the air enjoying the moment after all the stick he got for supporting Alty. I can't remember if it was the Everton tie or Liverpool when Stoke City were also playing in the City leading to an implausibly large amount of red and white in Liverpool.

Incidentally didn't Altrincham briefly play in red shorts more recently? I'm sure they did white shorts at one point too.

There was also a theory that it was related to Aberdeen (or one of their three predecessors (one of whom were involved in a record 36-0 scoreline I think)) being formed by teachers, as I understand. I'm not sure that it's even certain that Aberdeen is formed from a contraction of Don and Dee, the two rivers in that city. Apparently there was also more than one theory about the Yeltz, so I suppose what I really mean is can these other theories definitively be dismissed? And then there's the Grapplers. And what was Rigby Memorial School actually in memory of? And I think I read somewhere that Altrincham F.C. used to be called Broadheath Manchester - was this simply a mistake? Interesting stuff.

To be fair, I couldn't be 100% sure that he was on from the video especially in these days of an offside finger nail, though it must have been close. Anyway, things are generally goin in the right direction, and hopefully we will be better next season.

Looked more like the old Bishop Auckland floodlights (ironically they later got some floodlights from United)!

35,530 at OT - see the Twitter comments. I knew someone from Salford, a United fan really but talked about Salford City sometimes (this was before they went big time) who was there. There must be loads of people out there who were at the game. Apparently a lot of Heathcote's fellow dockers were at the game. Considering though that Alty apparently took 10,000 down to Middlesex in 1978, presumably there were plenty of people who went to other Alty games too.
