Blimey, where did you find a school like that?

Schools aside, surely a match can still be played in a light covering of snow. I seem to remember one of our greatest ever results was in the snow, where a huge effort was made to get the game on and a man called Pritchard was the hero!

I think we should be concentrating on the Cheshire Senior Cup. Thriving

If we're playing Macc in the final will it be all ticket - and would this be a first for the CSC? It strikes me that in this scenario there might be a bit more demand than usual and possibly a few rum coves turning up, plus Wincham Park isn't particularly big.

I must say I would enjoy a CSC/FAT double!

I'm not sure this is like 1991, I suspect a Trophy run could work in our favour and give everyone a lift. And besides, if we're good enough to win a couple of FAT matches, we're good enough to stay up. Looking at the table, we would have to do very badly now to go down.

Altrincham FC First Team / Ollie Byrne penalty save now on Alty TV

See here.

I should add that someone watching from the Golf Road End thought it had hit the bar, that's how high it was, and he'd already started to dive. I think even I will have to give him credit for this one ( and I can be a bit "Roy Keane" when it comes to saves)! Can see him being an absolutely top keeper in a year or two if he sticks at it.

I thought it was for Talbs. Says something that he had two songs.

"He's bigger than Jaap Stam/ He plays for Altrincham/ Gary Talbot, whoooa/ Gary Talbot, whoooa" - also used for Mark Sertori ("he comes from Italy, he plays for the Alty" - which Stuart Coburn once changed to "he works in a cafe"!).

The other one, "there's a Gary Talbot way up in the sky/ He gets the ball into the net because he is so high". Probably just me, but I found this one quite funny for some reason.

Best one in my time was probably "he scored a goal and made us dance"!

Shades of the Ian Craney song (he plays in red 'n' white, and sometimes light blue, he's better than Pele, and Zico too).

And the one about Jaap Stam! We've had some right corkers over the years, and maybe a few stinkers too.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Promotion to Football League
« on: January 14, 2023, 08:03:17 PM »
Absolutely against it - should be four promoted from the National League like happens in the division above (and to match the four down)!

To be fair, it sounds like in 1986 an 2002 they somewhat had the FL clubs over a barrel, so unless there's something I don't know about, I don't expect it.

By the way, anyone know what finally convinced the Scottish League to allow teams to be promoted to it? I suspect something to do with the formation of the Lowland League or the formation of New Co. Rangers.

To my mind, this  is rather like York City (or whoever) saying in 1974-5 that their player should have gone to a first division club rather than Manchester United. Historically, Chesterfield (and the Shrimpers among others for that matter) are ridiculously big for this level, and in addition Chesterfield have a massive cup match coming up, plus a manager with a previous connection to Colclough. If he'd gone to Oldham, I might have questioned it, but Chesterfield - fair enough. As has been pointed out, we sold a player to Chester "City" and came out alright in the end, so I trust the board, and Colclough for that matter.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: CSC Stockport out
« on: January 12, 2023, 07:40:32 PM »
some random observations thrown up by this thread.

the fixture at vauxhall reminds me how much i miss the regular local away games the lower divisions served up (heresy to admit i know)
i remember kevin ellison's first alty game pre-season at flixton on a very hot day and him immediately taking his boots off when substituted due to blisters.
and finding myself standing standing next to a very smartly suited brendan burke at the bar of the finnegan's wake pub (previously and latterly the brunswick) in manchester, and lacking the courage to say, "hey, you're brendan burke and you play for alty".
Brendan once worked at the old Natwest Bank in Blackley village , always had a chat with him , lovely guy and decent player too though had his best spell at Mossley .
I seem to remember Mossley making a cash bid to sign Coburn from Leigh, but Stuart point blank refused to go, eventually joining Altyon a free.

Did Brendan play when Mossley beat us in the FA Cup around this time?

            Byrne

Mullarkey  J.Jones  Baines  E.Jones

      Lundstram  Marriott

     Hulme  Osbourne  CCC

               Jennings

Personally I'd pick Colclough at left wing...

Speaking of which, what was that Irish pub called at what used to be the Pig And Porcupine? Possibly Kelly's bar (the first Irish pub  in Alty?)? I got thrown out once for "talking to the tv...)

The switch to Hooton suggests to me that if we are "lucky" enough to be drawn against the newly formed Macclesfield club in a later stage of the competition, it may well be switched too.

193
Do you think he will go? It was presented as a done deal this morning but still no word, suggesting at the least that we are holding out for a good deal, and in glass half full mode that it may end up as one of those non-stories like "Parky to Chesterfield". Oh well, perhaps we'll know by tomorrow, and as I say I'm sure the board will do their very best for the club. On reflection, compared to some of the situations we've been in post-Maunders, this isn't such a bad one, i.e. will we sell a player for maybe 50 or 100k - or will we keep a "league one" standard player for the rest of the season?

After Boring Wood draw at Notts. I get the feeling Wrexham'll do it this season.

And in other news, Rochdale are out of the bottom two after beating Bradford City. Away. I always assumed they'd get out of it somehow, then again I assumed it about Stockport and Macc. To be fair though, 'Dale are rather better run, and I will be very happy if we can end up like them long term.

195
Yes, there was some doubt about it. I seem to remember an article in the programme about it last season and assumed it was starting from last season. I think someone else said similar. However the board hasn't mentioned anything about it for some time to the best of my knowledge so it is hard to be certain. What we can be sure of is that if a five year plan was dated from the appointment of Parky, it was one of the best ever! In any case, if we can be challenging for the play-offs in a couple of years, I think we'll be doing alright. Earlier this season, people would have been happy just to stay up, and if we could finish 11th to secure our best finish post-Maunders, that would be fantastic for me.
