Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Wealdstone - Match Thread

It seemed like a long way to travel to see a rather dull game but I am pleased that we came away with a point because it has been far from habitual for us to so over the years.

When we won the National League in 1979/80 and 1980/81 we beat them both times away (1-4 and 1-2 respectively).

It is still so very early in the season that nothing is out of reach for us just yet and we all know how good we are capable of being.  I maintain that we are still in line for a top season with lots of special memories being forged and committed to memory for altyfans.co.uk of the future.

Our luck always seems to abandon us just as we are starting to look good but between 1978 and 1982, Kingy & Co. made their own luck.  They were part-time, beer supping, dressing room door kicking, bad permed haircut heroes who never, ever gave up, even in the dying seconds of the game.

1978/1979 was supposed to be the year that we won the NPL title that had so eluded us, but Mossley eventually beat us to the title (and to the NPL Cup final at Maine Road where they subsequently defeated Northwich Vics) and had one of the best non-league teams that I can ever recall seeing.

Does anyone remember Leo Skeete (a prolific goal scoring centre-forward) ...or midfield maestro Eamonn O'Keefe (who signed for Everton the following season and was also capped for Ireland a number of times).  Anyway, I'm veering off topic as usual.  I just wanted to give this example of Alty's "never say die" attitude of the time.  We met Mossley in the two-legged semi-final of the NPL Cup that I have already revealed that they went on to win, however, the first leg played at Moss Lane saw us lagging behind 1-4 with about 10 minutes left to play.  The ground was evacuating quickly but I decided to wait until the end and was I pleased that I did as Alty won the leg 5-4.

Please don't ask what the score was in the return leg at Seel Park!!!

I remember that my father insisted on calling them "Hartlepools" when we met them in the FA Cup during the early 1970s.

It appears that this stems in the main from the 1908 foundation of the present club.  Although playing at the Victoria Ground, situated in West Hartlepool, the team was named Hartlepools United against public opinion as it was decided by the monkey hanging powers of the time ( that's another story) that the team should represent both of the two Hartlepool boroughs (Hartlepool and West Hartlepool) that existed at the time.

Some considerable time later, the team and the boroughs both became singular and so In 1968 the "s" and the "United" were dropped from the team name of "Hartlepools United". This was in connection with West Hartlepool being absorbed along with the old smaller town of Hartlepool and the village of Hart into one new borough named "Hartlepool".  The appendage "United" was restored in 1977.

Thanks to [Wikipedia] and [When Saturday Comes: The Half Decent Football Book By Tim Bradford] for providing the information reproduced in part above.

Perhaps they could have thrown "Hartlepool Boroughs" or "Hartlepool Towns" into the mix as well.

I have not had the heart to mention the time out due to  Ollie's injury today, but I saw my friend yesterday who asked how the two new signings were doing. I replied that Ethan Rpss was great and had saved two penalties, but Ollie Crankshaw was injured. He just nodded, knowingly.

I didn't go to Barnet, but I couldn't fault Ollie Crankshaw for effort the previous week, and can't think of anyone who has worked so hard to make a good impression on his debut.

I have thought the same about CCC, but in your spirit of positivity, remember that he  was slow to get going last season, and improved dramatically as the season went on.

After just watching the Bromley highlights again I am now minded to agree with your remarks about his efforts on that day. The poor referee
display overshadowed everything I remember that day... and CCC will come good I'm sure.

I did get a slightly barbed response from my County supporting friend when I mentioned that we had signed Ollie Crankshaw. "He used to be a good player until he was injured and was never the same afterwards," but he wished both "Alti" (whoever they are) and the player good luck and thought he would fit our style of play.

I have to say it did cross my mind that we could have signed a crock when I read this Sale Holmfield.

Additionally, during the short period of time that he has had on the field he has not looked match fit or really threatened to make any impact IMHO.  He has looked frail to me (as if he could do with a good square meal) and I am not surprised about what has happened, just upset that the same old, same old injury problems that annually beset us are looming large again.

I am trying to keep up a positive vibe so perhaps now is not the time to remark that CCC appears to be out of sorts.  Does anyone agree?

My strongest proposal would be to start negotiations at some or other level with Trafford MBC sooner rather than later and sound them out on a number of the options put forward here to see what is possibly doable and what is not before opportunities that may be available now soon disappear.

My suggestion is to redevelop the current site of the ground as a multi-use sports stadium and Community Leisure Centre in Partnership with Trafford MBC.

I think I am right about Trafford MBC owning all the land involved and so it would make sense for them, as an existing stakeholder to get onboard a plan for a redeveloped Stadium incorporating a new leisure centre.  Some of the allotment holders would have to say goodbye to their plots in order for development to go ahead but if offered the the right compensation and given that the development would benefit many more Trafford residents than the the allotments have ever done (or are ever likely to) I think that it could well be worth looking into.

My plan would be for Trafford BC to sell the prime Town Centre land to a developer (where the Leisure Centre once stood) and to invest the money along with investment money raised by the Football Club to redevelop Moss Lane but with the inclusion of a new Combined Swimming Pool and leisure centre with a Sports Hall, all weather pitch, gym, etc. that could also used by the Club.  If this was thought out well enough could it not negate the need for having to pay Egerton to use their facilities?

Alty..... 4    Bromley..... 1

Att. 1,924

Actual attendance was 1,921 and was just 3 out.  A great guess I thought.

Actual goals scored by Alty was also just 3 out and was a bloody awful guess!

By far the worst 'out of town' new build stadium I have been to is the one at Chester.  Situated at the far end of an industrial estate by a sewage treatment plant it is several miles away away from the centre of town and could be mistaken for a group of poorly constructed farm buildings from the outside.

Preposterous I know, but if we won 30 games 1 nil we would be champions...maybe....30 goals spread between two scorers is a modest 15 each

I would be happy with that.

Option 1.

I would only be agreeable to a different location if it was within a one mile radius of the Town Centre and was easy to get to on foot.

I too, am not against a new 'a le Fylde' style stadium.  The game on Monday was the first time I have been there and I was really impressed with it.  There was nothing that would prevent me from being proud if Alty played in a similar stadium... except if it was not built at Moss Lane or a new location at a similar distance from the Town Centre.

A capacity of 7,500 would be about right for us. I think that we have to accept that we are subject to a niche status with limited opportunities to grow our attendances.

This is due to two European Mega Clubs a short distance to the north, Stockport County to the east, Scousers and Rugby League wallahs to the west and the relatively sparsely populated Cheshire Plain to the south.  When we are doing well we do attract some fans from City and United who watch Alty as their 'second' team but they don't hang around when the going gets tough.  I see us attracting a core of home supporters that is an average somewhere between 2,500-4,000 if we make EFL2 making our attendances between 3,000 - 5,000 with away fans included.

It should be noted that Wrexham won promotion last season with Paul Mullin scoring 80 goals in 92 matches in the two seasons he was with them.

Likewise, Langstaffe at Notts County, the other successful promotees, scored 44 goals in 50 matches. These are the sort of statistics that we are going to need to produce if we are to be serious contenders for promotion.  Can we do it?

A new remote site might be tolerated whilst we are in the ascendancy but what happens if we have a sudden decline?

What are you talking about UA? From here, the only way is up 👆 👆🇦🇹🏆

Yes, I totally agree, up Moss Lane to see the match at a redeveloped Stadium. I have just been looking at some of the 392 pages of complaints from the York City fans on their forum about their new LNER Stadium.

Home is where the heart is.

Keep 20th April free so you can be at Moss Lane where Alty will be parading the NL Trophy.

I think that moving to a site remote from the Town would be a grave error.  Our current position is ideal.  The Interchange is only 0.8 miles from Moss Lane and is a gateway to the present site that could not be replicated if we move out of town.
