Altrincham FC First Team / Alty press cuttings and other memorabilia.
« on: January 31, 2024, 01:43:54 PM »
With my health in woeful decline and me not being sure when I will be able to make my next game, I have decided to place all the Alty related stuff that I have accrued over the years, but mainly collected when I was a young Alty fan onto this thread.  Most of the newspaper clips were found along the way whilst I was conducting Family History research during the last 20 years or so.

If we are promoted to EFL in the summer I will miss the FA Trophy and the annual chance to perhaps take down one of the big clubs in the sort of David and Goliath encounters that have so defined us over the decades that I have followed the Robins. Therefore, today I shall start with the 3-1 victory in the Trophy Final against Leatherhead at Wembley in 1977/78.  I know that we could still claim some big scalps in the FA and Caribou Cups but somehow for me it will never carry quite the same quedos.  If you have anything to add or contribute about that day or anything that features in the coming days, please feel able to so.

Here are the match programme covers from the semi-finals and the Wem-ber-ley one.  I remember how disappointed I was when we only managed to hold them to 0-0 during the home leg of the semi-final.  After the game a mass brawl broke out on Stamford Park.  It became known, typically for the era as the Battle of Stamford Park.  No Vikings were in attendance.

Apres la bataille de Stamford it was with some trepidation that I went to Canal Street by coach to see the second leg.  We got lost on the way there.  The driver didn't have a clue where he was going and we ended up almost launching the coach into the Manchester Ship Canal at Weston Point (Runcorn Docks).  When we arrived at the ground our end was already full and we were told that we had to go into the home end.  I have never before or since been as restrained as I was when Mal Bailey, former Runcorn player, whose banjo had never seen a barn door, scored the only goal of the game.  There was only 7 or 8 minutes left to go at that stage and they seemed like they were the longest minutes of my life.  What a day that was and I avoided getting 'docked' after the game.

I don't feel as if I need to say anything about the final.  Everthing that needs to be said is covered by the following press clippings.  Their were a lot of Red and white flags that day. Literally thousands.

The Runcorn Guardian's take on the loss to Alty in the Semi and what the M.E.N. had to say about it.  We took the headline in the Manchester Evening News Pink Final .  Only those of us who were alive before t'interweb will know what the Pink Final was and how its passing has eroded away a much loved aspect of football culture.  I remember the Pink Final guy setting himself up on the corner of Moss Lane and Stamford New Road where he used to sell the results paper every Saturday at about 5.30pm.

Tomorrow I plan to add Spurs v Alty 1979.

I have attached a simple chart that gives some basic Family History details from my maternal line including birth, spouse, death, occupation and place of birth.

The primary individual is my mother, Pamela Hollingworth, and research here is complete up until and including my Great, Great, Great Grandparents.

I have copies of documents that support and verify all the entries seen here and there are considerably more than this (more than 1,000 individuals). The Hollingworth research is currently at rest with the marriage of Richard HOLLINWORTH to Mary HASILHURST at St Mary's in Bowdon on 16th May 1678.  Richard was born during the rule of Oliver Cromwell at the time of the Republic (1653-1659) and was my (7x Great) Grandfather.

What was your first home game and at what game did you buy your first 'Robins Review?'

My first Home game that really counts was against Accrington Stanley of the Lancashire Combination in the 4th Qualifying Round of the 1974/75 season.  We won 3-0 and that was the day that I was hooked. Next we played Skunthorpe United at the Old Showground in the 1st Round 'Proper'.  Following a creditable 1-1 draw we thrashed them at Moss Lane 3-1.  I did attend a game back in the late 1960s against South Shields but don't remember much about it except that I mithered my Dad to buy me a meat and potato pie that I then proceeded to drop onto the ground as the bulk of the pie fell away and I was left holding a small piece of crust.

My first Robins Review was for the 2nd Round of the FA Cup at home to Gateshead whom we swept away with a 3-0 victory.

Can you spot the not-so-deliberate mistake on this advertisment from the Robins Review v Wigan Athletic of 28/12/1974?  Incidentally,  I see that a certain Paul Clements was named as substitute in that game for Wigan.

This iconic picture of John Hughes scoring the goal that put us ahead in the tie with Everton appeared on the cover of the Robins Review for the rest of the season and into the next.

By the way,  I haven't dropped a pie since.

Altrincham FC First Team / Alty, Alty... Top of the League...

Well, its yet another big one again on Saturday and we really do need to be winning it.  Barnet have left behind some of the good form that they had shown early doors when it looked as though they were going to make Chesterfield work for the title, however they will be hoping that their recent win against Southend will give them a boost.  Southend are no mugs as we soon found out when we met them at Moss Lane a few weeks ago.  They will no doubt fancy themselves to take all three points back to North London. Lets hope that the pitch will stay dry and fingers crossed for a bumper crowd to get behind Alty. Is it at all possible that we might see the return of the SuperMaxibon during the January transfer window?  I really hope so.

The first of two featured matchday programmes from the past is from what I believe was our first ever meeting with Barnet occurring during the inaugural season (1979/80) of the Alliance Premier League, the league that essentially evolved into the highly competitive National League. We won the game 1-0.

I remember that I didn't think much of Barnet at the time. They were in a lowly position in the league and we were "Top of the League" a position that we grew used to.  We were regularly referred to as the "Manchester United" of non-league football.  There was one major point that was not in our favour... look at the poor attendances. Pitiful for such a good team.

Exactly one week later we met our old friends from Wealdstone in the 3rd Round of the APL Cup in which we were 2-1 Victors.

Why is this game interesting?  Well, aside from Alex Stepney, legendary Manchester goalkeeper playing for Alty, look who their number 3 was that evening.  Yes, it was the same one.

A big Alty welcome to goalscorer Marcus Dackers who I am sure will be soon knocking them in for the Robins.

Get in there Marcus we will be rooting for you on your debut tomorrow!

Altrincham FC First Team / "Is Vic There?"
« on: September 28, 2023, 11:49:35 PM »
Not that anyone here really gives a toss these days about our former arch enemy but Northwich Vics are on the move again.  I am reliably informed that they are moving in with neighbours Winsford United at Barton Stadium (used to be better known as a greyhound racing track back in the day).  They have signed a deal to stay there for 3 years with an option for a further year if they need it...

Just for the sake of a bit of extra clarity, this is the Northwich Vics who were formed in 1874 as founder members of the Football League Division 2 and once knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup and not the imposters calling themselves 1874 Northwich who play in the same colours and also have'nt got a home to call their own. They were at Barnton last I heard.

Add to that that Witton Albion who at least managed to hang onto ownership of a ground (of sorts) that is in the middle of nowhere with no public transport connecting it to the town or railway station. Finally, I think there was even another team called something like Northich Villa (perhaps a nod there to the Roman past of Northwich) who were short lived and played their home games at the Etihad campus in Manchester.

I remember Northwich Vics as very worthy adversaries and it is sad that the combined attendances of the three clubs is barely enough to shake a stick at these days.

I remember that my father insisted on calling them "Hartlepools" when we met them in the FA Cup during the early 1970s.

It appears that this stems in the main from the 1908 foundation of the present club.  Although playing at the Victoria Ground, situated in West Hartlepool, the team was named Hartlepools United against public opinion as it was decided by the monkey hanging powers of the time ( that's another story) that the team should represent both of the two Hartlepool boroughs (Hartlepool and West Hartlepool) that existed at the time.

Some considerable time later, the team and the boroughs both became singular and so In 1968 the "s" and the "United" were dropped from the team name of "Hartlepools United". This was in connection with West Hartlepool being absorbed along with the old smaller town of Hartlepool and the village of Hart into one new borough named "Hartlepool".  The appendage "United" was restored in 1977.

Thanks to [Wikipedia] and [When Saturday Comes: The Half Decent Football Book By Tim Bradford] for providing the information reproduced in part above.

Perhaps they could have thrown "Hartlepool Boroughs" or "Hartlepool Towns" into the mix as well.

Altrincham FC First Team / Goal Scorers
« on: September 01, 2023, 11:59:22 AM »
It should be noted that Wrexham won promotion last season with Paul Mullin scoring 80 goals in 92 matches in the two seasons he was with them.

Likewise, Langstaffe at Notts County, the other successful promotees, scored 44 goals in 50 matches. These are the sort of statistics that we are going to need to produce if we are to be serious contenders for promotion.  Can we do it?

Non Altrincham FC Talk / Streets Ahead Record Shop
« on: August 02, 2023, 11:08:08 AM »
Does anyone remember the 'Streets Ahead' Record Shop on Lloyd Street around 1978/79.  They were the only ones left in an otherwise derelict row of shops that stood about where Sainsbury are now. They specialised in punk and new wave music and even released a few singles on their own label.  There were three I think: 1. The Kids just wanna dance by the Fast Cars  2.  Downpour by Foreign Press.  3. Don't remember anything about the other one.

I remember the Fast Cars and Foreign Press appeared and performed together at South Trafford College.  I think the shop was owned and managed by 'Jane'.

Non Altrincham FC Talk / Joy Division
« on: August 01, 2023, 06:03:46 PM »
Does anyone else remember Joy Division playing at Bowdon Vale Youth Club?

One of my mates tried to get me to go but I declined telling him that I had never heard of them and if they were from Macc as he said they were bound to be ****

I think we went to see the Angelic Upstarts at the Polytechnic Students Union instead (although it could have been the Cockney Rejects).  They let us in but after a couple of hours had passed and I had suffered several pints of Greenall Sh1tley it became evident that the band was never going to turn up.

Anyway, fair play to one of the Student Geeky types, whom I now believe was Ben Elton before he was Ben Elton, who announced that all was not lost because the Rezillos were playing at the University Students Union down the road. So, we all decamped there and arrived just in time to see them perform the 'Motorbike Beat'. Lead singer Eugene Reynolds had a massive quiff and brought a Harley on stage revving it up as and when.  The all girl support was the Revettes, all of whom had huge beehives and sang backing vocals.  None of the outrageous hair creations outlasted the gig.  It was all very much over the top but very enjoyable.

About six months later I went to see the Buzzcocks at the Apollo.  Their support? - Joy Division.

Non Altrincham FC Talk / Past memories of Altrincham & nearby places
« on: August 01, 2023, 01:00:37 PM »
When I were a young lad the best pies in Altincham were the flat round meat & potato pies baked in foil trays from the bakery on the corner of Shaw's Road and Greenwood Street. The pies seemed massive like a dustbin lid ...but so did Wagon Wheels back in the day!

Does anyone else remember this place?  I was talking to my sister about it the other day and she thinks that the proprietor might have been Polish.  She was fond of their Vanilla Slices' I was devastated when they closed in the early 1970s and replaced it with a much needed Antique Shop.

Barmby & Ward on the corner of Market Street and Shaw's Road had good pork pies and the best sausage rolls.
