Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Fanatic Zone

Ultimately, I'm just disappointed that the club appear to have shafted a business that flies the flag for us so well. I do hope the bridge hasn't been burned entirely.

As for the the fan zone, in whatever form it does finally take, it was created to drive footfall to the ground earlier, and generate more revenue from food and drink. I do not think it will achieve that aim if it is 'standard' bottled and canned options akin to the CSH. The fans who were interested in this project will likely to continue to drink in the town centre pre-game, probably at the bar that we could have had at the ground.

Very strongly agree with this sentiment.  I thought the Libero link-up was a big plus for the Club: good beer, local ind. company, likely to bring fans in earlier etc.  As a general point, I think the Club needs to exercise care moving forward into the professional era, and they will need to tread carefully the fine line that separates the core fan base from the (new) corporate backers who may stipulate unpopular demands in return for their sponsorship.  An interesting, local comparison might be to Sale FC who rebranded themselves as Sale Sharks in the run up to rugby going professional.  There, the board marketed the Club aggressively to attract a larger crowd that they hoped would ensure their survival.  While they have been successful in making the transition (propped up by RFU money?) I think the fan base has altered dramatically and would be unrecognisable from their time at Heywood Road.  As we move into this new pro-era, we must be prepared to embrace change, but not forget our roots, what it is we stand for, and the reason why we chose to support Alty in the first place.

Think Sale’s fan base altered dramatically due to the move from Heywood Road to the AJ Bell stadium in Salford. The difference in getting there from the wealthier Cheshire environs of Wilmslow, Alderney Edge, Altrincham was dramatically altered. Edgeley Park suited it very well but the AJ Bell May as wel be on the moon it’s that difficult to access.

So not really a true comparison although I know what you’re getting at.

I wonder if Jennings Quigley or Newby would be a ailable on loan?

Christ, I wouldn’t think Scott Quigley was available

There hasn’t been working sewers on the pop side of the ground for decades now.

The imbalance presented by funnelling everything towards the CSH corner of the ground (turnstiles, toilets, snack bar, bar) is a real issue and as Ollie alludes to, we need something sorted on that side just to alleviate pressure on those that use the Main Stand/CSH who aren’t as mobile etc.

I don’t think the club in years gone by ever seriously thought about realising it’s potential crowds wise but the short sighted, rushed planning and focus on the CSH has also taken away a large amount of movement and space that used to be there in the mausoleum days.

I’ve long been an advocate of match day turnstiles at the golf road being the ones at the far end (would reduce Moss Lane queuing) but we don’t because we built new turnstiles 15 years ago. We might actually have to be pro active and say, no, we don’t HAVE to use them.

When Osborne has steppes in at 10 he’s moved the ball quite slowly. I’m not sure he’s as dangerous or creative in that advanced role. Better suited to ticking it over in midfield I’d say.

Four much stronger clubs have come up to replace three pretty weak ones and the bigger clubs have all strengthened so it could be argued that there's even more strength in depth this season.

To be fair, it’s often the case that clubs coming up are stronger than clubs coming down, although I know what you mean.

My concern at this stage with the squad so far is where are the goals going to come from? We've lost Mooney and Hancock and haven't replaced either yet. I can't see Hulme being prolific (hope I'm wrong), so that only leaves Colclough and to an extent Kosylo. I'm sure we will be bringing one or two more attacking players in but they need to be top quality, as you say.

Exactly my fear, at present.

Two of our top four goalscorers from last season have departed: Mooney (13 goals) and Hancock (9 goals).

To be fair, 9 goals was a decent return from Hancock given he was press ganged into centre forward duties at times.

With Hulme up front all season he may have reached 12-15.

These are two shoes we need to fill with quality. Easier said than done I know but these aren’t replacements we can scrimp on I think.

                 Byrne

Barrows Baines Mullark Brockbank

      Marriot Lundstrum

      Colclough Kosylo XXX

            Hulme

Subs :Roxburgh Osborne Pringle Dinanga Jackson

Striker and Winger needed.

Cooper

Having seen Parky state today in his interview that Barrows and Brockbank will be the starting full backs, I’d definitely want Cooper and Mullarkey in the centre.

I mean, that back 5 you’ve got there is proper green isn’t it, really need Baines to be dead good don’t we.

I think with the council problems we’d have had an extra 276 fans in over those games which would push our average up into the top 15.

I’m happy with that. I thought he was better than Ferguson but I seemed to be in the minority.

At the very least we’ll start with a centre back partnership of Cooper and Mullarkey which was solid enough this season before we start titting about with others.

Baines sounds a good player but at least I’ve seen these two play together.

Would like us to get Perrett and Jones too.

If he’s already given assurances to the board then the only uncertainty is on here and frankly that doesn’t matter much in the scheme of things.

We can’t expect the club to come out and say the speculation is groundless every time someone claims to know something otherwise when it eventually is true that he’s talking to someone else their silence really does speak volumes and if it doesn’t come to anything it destabilises everyone unnecessarily. It’s why no other club comes out and says ‘our manager is being linked with xyz but don’t worry he’s not going anywhere’.

I’d expect Phil to be interested in the county job but I also think he is good enough to know that he is an integral part of this club now and he has an obligation to reciprocate some of the faith we have shown in him and not leave us in the lurch this season.   If he leaves for them next summer then fair enough, if he leaves just as we have committed this club to what he wants and said goodbye to so many stalwarts to do so then he is not the man I think he is.

I wasted ten minutes on a post before. This is absolutely it in a nutshell tbf.

As for the Notts County job, it’s extremely concerning and I’d genuinely  fear for us this year if he did go. You couldn’t begrudge him for it, though. They might be in our division but they’re streets ahead of us (and most of the rest of the national league) in nearly every other way.

Someone below mentioned it comes down to loyalty V ambition. Well, I don’t think we’d be where we are if Phil wasn’t highly ambitious. It’s just a question of whether we are the club where he can fulfil that or if he thinks Notts County offers the more appealing opportunity. I’m praying it’s the former.

Obviously Notts County are the biggest club in the league tbf but I was talking more generally. But that’s a good point that Phil’s ambition is what drives him. And maybe we can’t have it both ways. I just think we need to point out that it can’t simply be unfettered ambition if it leads to uncertainty that is destabilising. We’ve got a right to be able to plan properly for the present and future as a club just like PP has personally. And we have to take precedence.

Hopefully this is just an interesting topic rather than an actual issue though.

A very good post Ballers.
My only quibble would be that I think there were quite a number of people (myself included) who were appalled at the manner of hulmes departure (and his return actually).

Yeh I know, I was just really touchy about it still.

Also slightly embarrassed at how cheap I am when it turned out that one goal against Dagenham was all it took for me to put that it in the dustbin of history 😂

PSF away at Alton Royale in the early 90s. Never heard of them before or after, and no idea why we played them. It was somewhere around Birmingham I recall.

Great call. We played them to open their new ground, because Jeff Wealands was friends with the Olton Royale Chairman from his days playing for Birmingham City & living in Solihull.
Mark Carter played in that game for us.
This was the first match of the 1991/2 pre-season & played about a month before John King & Graham Heathcote resigned a week before the start of the season.

Wow, I didn’t know Carter had played in that. Did Showler play too? Must’ve been their only appearance together for Alty.

I wonder if that was a sign of the season that should’ve come. Carter had obviously done his job and made his money from Barnet by getting them promoted. Or to be perfectly honest, not getting us promoted, which I think was Flashman’s plan.

He always struck me as a reluctant league footballer. I wonder what else was planned.

Was the Simon Rudge and Tony Edwards deal put in place by Kingy and just ploughed on with anyway. We certainly needed a right back.

I presume Densmore (Peter) came back as he didn’t drive and had always car shared with Gary Anderson.

At the very least I think we should’ve had the early 90s that Runcorn had with McKenna, Shaw and Anderson (?) in their side if not the one Barnet and Bury had with Showler and Daws.
