Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Obscure Ticks

RAF Valley away, think it was the same season as the game above. We played some Japanese works outfit at home at some point also I remember.

A fair few lads traipsed up to Anglesey for the 3pm kick off only to find it had been played at 1pm because the players were basically there for a piss up and got it out of the way.

I think this is a very good idea. All a little bit of structure.

I would say possibly though that patrons should possibly also get priority for tickets (after the other 3 categories and season ticket holders of course) as kind of happened during covid times the past year or so as otherwise people who contribute £50 for not very much other than goodwill will not get very much.

Edit: as in they shouldn’t get very much, but I think the priority would be just about right.

I’ll probably just renew as a patron again regardless anyway.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Parky is 1/3 for the Notts County job
« on: June 08, 2022, 07:38:14 PM »
O k, first of all we’re showing a bit of inexperience here. Lots of people on the internet talk absolute bollocks and this one strikes me as a troll to be honest.

I think Notts County are more likely to go for Wrexham Parky tbh.

But regardless of all that, I think as a club we’d be well within our rights just to have a chat with PP and draw up some ground rules/rules of engagement.

Obviously PP came here as an ambitious manager from a lower division who would possibly move on (up). I think we used to say if he did a good enough job to attract suitors from higher up then that was fine as it would be good for us (in that he’d have done a good job).

However, circumstances have changed. We’ve taken the step up to go full time, not lightly taken I should add, and it’s an important year for us. It’s arguably the pivotal summer in the clubs history and requires the utmost focus and concentration from top to bottom including the manager.

Whilst there would always be speculation and Parky’s name linked to other jobs, I don’t think it’s healthy for us to continue when there is the possibility he would leave for a bigger club every time there’s a managerial vacancy (there will be at least 4 or 5 more of these during the season btw).

I mean, I’m being slightly presumptuous here. PP could well be reading this with bemusement having shown no desire or inkling to go to Notts County and wondering why his name is being bandied about.

But it might be time to just firm up a bit of protocol for the board. eg we’re not necessarily standing in your way but we expect not to go this summer or even indeed season, and definitely not on the eve of the season as Hulme did (I’m surprised how meekly people shrugged their shoulders at that still) and come to a form of agreement in addition to the standard contract. Because basically, any compensation paid would not be enough for losing our manager.

It’s all conjecture of course but I think we have a right to insist there’s not constant undue certainty (can’t be good for potential recruitment for a start).

I think they’re probably squad fillers. You need 20 odd fit players louring the week to do full training with.

Might be a good time to pull in a few young talents before f**king Macclesfield do

« on: June 07, 2022, 11:41:14 AM »
There’s far too many to mention tbh.

All sh*t, all similar, I guess the only thing that raises one above the other is circumstances. In which case a 2-3 defeat at Rushden in 1997 (we were already relegated) on the same last day when Macclesfield won the title (and promotion this time) away at nearby Kettering was the most tedious.

I only survived it because it was so f**king Alty that at one point you just had to laugh shake your head at it.

Of course, the actual answer to the question isn’t even a defeat. The worst result in our history, that will send a shudder through all Alty fans old enough, is the 3-3 draw away at Slough in 1991 that shut the door on our promotion dream.

I’ve never been so heartbroken after an Alty result before or since.

I think it’s sad that he could’ve been a hero in anew era here rather than joining a club which isn’t the most stable to say the least.

He’ll be a smaller fish in a bigger pond there. It’ll go the same way as Jordan Hulme this one.

There was plenty of hyperbole regarding Porter when he was signed on loan but I have to say that I found his spell with us to be underwhelming.

It wasn’t that good!

I’d like us to go with Mullarkey, Ferguson and Cooper if we can keep all 3. Not sure Hogan would be right option.

You need 4 centre halves. That’s an absolute necessity.

114
It would probably depend on

a) firstly is Liam Hogan still fit and good enough? If he’s released because they’re in the FL now and have huge resources anyway then that’s ok? If it’s because his legs are starting to go or have gone then that’s a red flag.

b) assuming he’s ok then look at who we are replacing. Hannigan has gone so if it’s his experience and steadiness we want to replace them Hogan would fit the bill. Think Mullarkey, Cooper, Ferguson, Hogan would be an improvement on the four centre halves we started this season with certainly?

I’m easy either way but the point is, Parky and Sorvs will have an idea of the make up and balance of their squad they want players to fit to.

Great news.
There was talk on another thread about the future signings which may come at the end of the month when contracts are up in the league.
What must happen sooner is the signing up of crucial members of the squad to full time contracts.
This is the first of them and I look forward with eager anticipation to seeing news of more very soon!

PS. I think it's the second one actually. Hasn't Toby signed up already?

I think the main benefit of going full time that I’m expecting to see/hoping for isn’t necessarily better recruitment but it giving us a better chance of retaining the good players we get (recruitment can always be a bit hit and miss by it’s very nature).

I don’t know much about the lads mentioned from other teams. I do know we’d be in a very strong position if we still had, James Jones, Marcus Smith, Josh Lundstram, Joel Senior and (for a period he was gone) Jordan Hulme hadn’t left us, for clubs which quite frankly aren’t really any bigger than us but could offer a combination of full time football/more money/football league status.

It might not have stopped it but if we can knock one of those three factors out then it would at least help.

If this comes off, won't it fund a couple of years of Hybrid/FT?
I hope so as, from what we've seen this year and last, that's the best way forward.

I get the impression this is a case of claiming money we were already due in the circumstances (and may have already had to spend a large proportion of?) rather than a nice new shiny wad of money to fund us over the next couple of years?

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Weymouth - Match Thread
« on: March 09, 2022, 12:48:44 AM »
A big game for both sides but especially for Weymouth who are drinking in the last chance saloon. They’ve ran some of the big boys close recently but away from home it’s 10 defeats out of 14 with 30 conceded & they haven’t won on the road since October. That long old coach journey followed by the game tomorrow won’t help either.

Our performance since the Woking game have been very encouraging & the loanees have definitely given us an extra spark and tightened us up at the back. I think it will be tight but 2-0 Alty I’d say which will give us the platform for 6/6 at home this week. We haven’t lost a home game to anyone in our mini league (ie below Southend) in the table this season which is another encouraging factor.

You raise a good point regarding Southend, it probably puts that result a bit more into perspective now.

I disagree. Southend were weak and poor when we played them and, not for the first time in our lives, we absolutely calpolled them. Fair play to them for taking that and running with it but I’m gnashing teeth at that shower being 7 points above us. Honestly. I want 3 points in the away game tbh.

With regards to tonight, it was a very good game to just start T**tting it into the top corner from all angles a la Grays Athletic 2005 tbh.

I don’t think Weymouth will catch us.

TBH the chips in the clubhouse are Ok but not a patch on the chips over the road! Up until a year or two ago we could bring them in but not now (unless you sneak em in) ha, SBL

I'd be very surprised if "The Good Catch - Award winning fish and chip shop" didnt have better chips than a football club!
Ask them to rebrand to the robins retreat and go into partnership with them at the ground on match days 😆

There were reports of a fight in a chip shop

From what I remember, my dad held to draw in a different pub each Saturday night and on Monday we at Cheshire Printers used to print the results sheet, dad’s motto was ‘If you’re not in - you won’t win’.   A lot of money was raised for the club.

I can absolutely hear your dad saying that! Not literally as in, I was around at the time, but I can distinctly hear his tones and phrase even now 👍

I seem to remember being surprised about Shotton turning up at Matlock last season (and having a bit of a row as I recall). Then again, John Johnstone ended up at Kidsgrove, so I suppose these things happen. I always hoped that Kevin Ellison would come back to us at some point, but instead he carries on in the football league at 42! He must be on for some sort of record by now.

I think Matlock have quite a bit of backing behind them for that level to be honest.
