Altrincham FC First Team / John Laidlar being too modest again
« on: February 24, 2008, 10:01:11 AM »
When he mentioned the 442 account of the Droylsden match the other week he included this remark on the official website

ANDY ON ALTY
Well-known football writer Andy Mitten (and also Josh Mitten's brother) has now produced his account of attending the Droylsden v Alty game last Saturday. It can be found on the 4-4-2 blog and it includes the following comment on the Robins' travelling support- "Their proud history was recalled in a superb song by the 600 travelling fans in the 1,177 crowd when, to the tune of Lionel Ritchie’s Three Times a Lady, they sang: 'We’ve been once, twice… three times to Wembley… and you’ve won the Manchester Cup'".

However, what he hasn't mentioned is something else in the article....

The Robins do have one of the best websites in football though – a real labour of love by webmaster John Laidlar. Lower-level football would struggle without men like him.

Hear Hear.  :)

*Cult is disqualified as I know he knows the answer (can pm me if you want).

WHICH CURRENT PREMIERSHIP MANAGER HAS PLAYED AGAINST ALTY IN A COMPETITIVE MATCH? (i.e. friendlies don't count)

p.s. That's Premiership as in Utd, Arsenal etc not the BSP.

Altrincham FC First Team / From the ridiculous to the sublime

Following on from the pantomime pictures I posted earlier, this was the outstanding piece of defending in the match.

http://gavin.ukgrrls.co.uk/p47722156.html

Darren Tinson really had to get his head down and find some pace for once, he's still got it when he needs to. Isyeden Christie is dam quick but Tinno made up at least a yard and a half on him.

A really excellent tackle at a crucial time. Hope ATS caught it.  :-*

Altrincham FC First Team / Which ex Alty player did I bump into tonight?
« on: January 01, 2008, 03:35:03 AM »
A pint for the first to guess correctly.

1. I once played with him at Flixton.

2. A lanky winger.

3. It's not Charlie Bradshaw.

4. Pre season friendlies.

5. Simon Beaumont warming up.

Can I just wish all Alty fans a sh*te Christmas including rubbish presents and burnt turkey but an absolutely fantastic Boxing Day and New Year.

Like how much you enjoy Xmas doesn't revolve around the derby result.  ;)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regards the footballing comparisons.

As you know we missed out to Telford an Burscough last season and their performance in BSN is a good benchmark. We scored more goals and won more games than these two last year and as we know lost out on goal difference of 1. If anything this may have served us better as we were less prepared to go up.

If there is a weakness at the moment it is in the physical side of the game, we can play some of the nicest football you will see in non-league but sometimes this does not get you the points.

We have a fair few players that can more than hack it a higher level; Liam Brownhill (recently called up to England 'C' as the only Unibond representative); Rod Thornley (you probably know him!); Cavell Coo (ex Crewe and a very capable right back); Rob Lloyd (another Crewe player that has only opted to play semi-pro to further his university education at the moment); Adam Warlow (30+ goals last season and already 18 this year - already attracting attention from other clubs); Mark Peers (ex Liverpool academy and only his height/build perhaps stop him from league football). John Kennedy (one of the best goal keepers outside the football league, ex Halifax, Blackpool, etc). Not to mention Alex Brown who before his knee operation was our best player in the opening 7 or 8 games!

The shape and style of our football has truly been a pleasure to watch, we pass the ball around superbly and coming forward look capable of scoring with every move. Only beaten once all season - away at Lincoln on the opening day. 10 points clear at the top. For 47/Against 11 and 48 points before the half way stage!

When we have faced BSP & BSN teams in cup competitions in the past couple of seasons they have been tight games and if not for a bit of luck and honestly a bit of naivity on our part we would have won most of them. I think we are learning all the time, there are still a lot of lads between 21-24 in the side that are about to hit their best years.

And we have a good manager, irrespective of the players brought in and those departed our style of football has gone unchanged - we are trying to go about the game the right way.

Next April/May is still a fair bit away but another 12/13 wins maybe enough to win our league if past years is anything to go by and at the moment I can only see us being beat maybe 3 or 4 times this season if that many! 13 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats would give us 91 points, over the last 3 years 80, 89 and 88 points have won it. Fleetwood are probably the biggest threat and have a big set-up behind them.

I genuinely think it would be good for the area if there was closer competition again on the pitch between the two clubs.
