I've been quite impressed with Ogle so far today, a real step up from previous times I've seen him play.

Fingers crossed that we keep it going and secure the three points!  :)

If ever one man dragged a team pretty much single-handed through a game, this was it. A quality player.

I don't know what the fuss is about Ogle, he's looked very ordinary when I've seen him. Not awful by any means, but I don't think he's great either.
I agree.
However the first job for PP is to identify which of the squad he doesn't feel are NL calibre.
That's part of the job for this close season.
The second part of the job is to address our shortcomings with new signings.
The third job is to replace the OK players with better ones to improve us.
I think this last bit is too much to expect before next season, but would hope he could achieve the first two steps. (he really needs to).
Ogle, for me, falls into the OK category so I think he'll stay for now whilst other, more pressing, concerns are addressed.

I can see your point.

We might get the live game if they can still win the title, we haven’t had a home game yet

No, BT don't like coming to Alty unless they absolutely have to. Pretty sure we are the only promoted team not to have had a home game shown live this season.
Was that Burton game with John Barnes on BT?

That was a cup game when we were in Conf North, but yes it was on BT.

I thought IG was ESPN

Yes I think you're right, now I think about it.

I think you now get one with the other, which is where my confusion possibly arose from.

Fairly sure we didnt get a home game live on bt last time we were at this level.

Correct.

Away friendlies at bigger clubs are not unprecedented. I remember playing Crewe away in the 1994/95 pre-season. I wonder if we might look at doing something similar again, especially having built fairly good relations with them with loan players in recent times.

My biggest worry would be if we have lapsed into a similarly relaxed mentality to that which appeared to set in when we reached mathematical safety in 2014/15, and which we never seemed to recover from the following season when we ended up getting relegated. I still have huge faith in Phil and Neil to lead us forward, but that is my main concern at present.

I get your point, however you could look at that the other way and that the lads might have found it hard to motivate themselves to go again after such a successful first season, which is clearly no longer the case.

With 2014/15 unless I'm mistaken I think some of our best players (Young to York? Senior to Darlington?) were cherry picked and not adequately replaced, whereas I can't see many of the current lot being poached just yet.

Young and Senior were both long gone by 2014/15.

There was a discernible change after we stayed up that year, which was exacerbated further by our last minute defeat at Colchester in the cup the following season, after which, in all honesty, our heads "went".

I’m sure we’ll play another 5/6 PSF all in the NW at least. If we have a new director who is putting his time, money & skill set into the club then arranging one PSF (and presumably a good chance for the lads to bond over a weekend away) at his local club, then it’s really not a big deal for me. The Isle of Man was hardly down the road & I don’t recall too much fuss about our match there.

Agree with this. If the only "cost" for strengthening our board of directors is to play a friendly in Essex, I can't see the harm in it.

Who wouldn't fancy a nice weekend away in the Costa del Clacton, anyway? ;D

He wasn't exactly setting the world alight at York before he came here and helped to get us promoted. Sometimes players and clubs just don't mix. I'd be prepared to give him a go, but that's just my opinion.

If you look at that Tony Sanders managed team from his arrival to us reaching the pinnacle, the evolution was not dissimilar to what we are seeing today.

You had mainstays like Ivan Crossley and Mickey Brooke becoming squad players - but still playing an important role (Brookes goal at Droylsden taking us to White Hart Lane for example); you had a raising of the bar seeing upgrades from (eg) Mickey Moore to John Rogers, and a falling by the wayside of the (eg) Joe Flaherty's of this world.  You even saw the odd big name signing coming in and failing to make an impact (Tony Webber as example)

And the main thrust was strengthen the squad each year - Johnson and Webber in 76/7; Rogers, Bailey and King in 77/8; Barry Howard in 78/9; Graham Barrow and Barry Whitbread in 79/80.  And we ended up with a squad that had replaced (eg) Alan Heathcote with Graham Barrow

The arrival of Ceesay, Mooney, Senior, Colclough, Kosylo and Smith (the new Graham Barrow) is part of the same dynamic.

Coincidentally, the board is expanding to a similar size as it was in the late 70's - ambitious young dynamic business leaders (and me!)

The root cause of the demise from 80/1 onwards was that we felt we had to give the team that missed out on FL another go, and their momentum carried them to a second title.  Unfortunately they all reached the end of their career at the same time (albeit at Wembley).

We should perhaps have wielded the axe in 1980 and given new talent time to grow

Bill,

I think that you've gone a trifle early there!

Plus the likes of Jeff Johnson and John Davison, in particular, still had a few good years left in the tank.

If we had done that, we would have missed out on experiencing the most successful season (1980/81) in the club's history: an Alliance Premier League & Cup double plus an FA Cup Third Round tie against Liverpool at Anfield (not to mention two thrilling encounters with Cammell Laird in the Cheshire Senior Cup)!

The sucker punch to the club comprised the results of the 1981 Football League AGM Re-election Vote:

Tranmere Rovers    FL    48 re-elected to Division Four
York City          FL    46 re-elected to Division Four
Hereford United    FL    46 re-elected to Division Four
Halifax Town       FL    41 re-elected to Division Four
Altrincham         FC    15

At which juncture, I think that it became blindingly apparent that we were never going to be invited to become a member of that private club, regardless of our achievements on the pitch.

The 1981/82 season saw Tony Sanders endeavour to evolve the team by blooding younger players such as Derek Goulding, Phil Gardner, John Cavanah and Nick Banner. however expectations were probably still set too high and it was difficult for these new recruits to be judged against the exploits of individuals who had become legends at Moss Lane.

Consequently, Tony Sanders' default ploy was to fall back on 'the old guard', who still had the ability to produce excellent one-off results but could no longer maintain their previous high levels of consistency and success.

Bearing in mind how close we'd come the year before, coupled with the excellent season we had in 1980/81, it really surprises me how few votes we received the second time round. From missing out by one vote to, basically, nowhere at all. We truly were robbed!

Has there ever been a worse 11 mentioned on here?

Andy Dawber
Simon Woodford
Brian Kilcline
Danny Higgingbotham
LB ?
Brian Smikle
Fabio Bassangue
Chris Young
Billy Hasler-Cregg
Jamie Menagh
Byron Harrison

Manager: Neil Young

Struggling to think of a left back that’s been as bad as some of these

LB would be Dave Swannick, I reckon.
