Altrincham FC First Team / Leamington match thread

The draw specialists - a trend they started at our place on the opening day of the season.

We'll be fresh, but they had a tough game on Tuesday against County. We need the three points from this to maintain our playoff challenge. The two teams above us have quite tough assignments - Spennymoor host Chester, and Telford go to Southport., so It's feasible that we could be up to 4th at teatime on Saturday.

I'm on the coach and will be ready to rumble....

Altrincham FC First Team / Southport Match Thread

First of two difficult home matches in four days against sides who are in really good nick at the moment. If we're going to be serious playoff contenders, we absolutely have to pick up the six points.

Hopefully the loan striker who was expected by last weekend will turn up. We need to freshen things up.

No prediction from me. I'm just going to grit my teeth and think positive.

....an 18 month deal with Southport, having been released from his jail sentence, and just in time to turn out at Moss Lane on Saturday.

Do read John Laidlar's site on this one - extravagant and embarrassing eulogy from Liam Watson is truly cringeworthy.

Unarguably the most important game of the season so far. They've got over their recent form slip to some extent, but clearly aren't the juggernaut they seemed to be in August and September.

The wheels were back on the bus at Boston, although we didn't really beat very much. Play largely as we did in the last 25 minutes of the first half there, and we need fear nobody. Sit deep like we did in the last 20 minutes of the match, and we could be in trouble.

Tony Cascarino, on the Southampton v West Ham game in today's Times :

"One curiosity was how little either goalkeeper rolled the ball out to their full backs. Both kicked it long every time You're talking about one sophisticated manager who won the Premier League with Manchester City, and another who favoured a high-intensity strategy at Red Bull Leipzig. Yet their reasoning was clear. It was recognition that playing the ball out from defence is a risk; that you're unlikely to get through a whole match without giving something away."

I see the point but don't totally agree - we work really well when the keeper feeds it to a defender and we set off a rapid forward movement. What frightens me to death is our tendency to pass the ball across the edge of our own penalty area. We've been caught out a few times recently, but have largely got away with it. I'm worried that our luck will vanish at a crucial moment.

Altrincham FC First Team / Travelling

Had to chuckle over a story I picked up on John Laidlar's "Alty Files" site.

Hereford striker Harry White left the club a week or so back, having been unable to nail down a starting spot. He told the club that he was " going to go travelling".

USA ? India ? Australia ?

Nope. He's travelled a touch over 50 miles and signed for Redditch United. You have to admire his sense of adventure.....

See John Laidlar's site. Not content with interviewing PP and confusing him with that loser at Bolton, they get all our stats wrong !

I wouldn't use it to wrap my chips in.

I feel a bit sorry for him to be honest. Shouldn't have moved out his comfort zone.

"Today marks the 16th anniversary of Kevin Ellison's first League goal - for Stockport County in  3-1 win at Blackpool. The Morecambe striker, who will be 40 on February 23rd, came off the bench to score his 137th League goal in the 1-1 draw at Newport on Saturday."

The guy is such an example to young players everywhere.

I'd be less worried if we hadn't just beaten them at their place, and they hadn't felt that we didn't deserve to.

A lot of familiar faces, and a thirst for revenge, will make this a difficult challenge.

I take us to battle through 2-1 (Hannigan, Johnston)

Attendance 826

Macclesfield Town manager Mark Yates win this year's "Nobel Prize for Stating the Bleeding Obvious " after last night's slight 8-0 hiccup against a below-strength West Ham.

....Macclesfield Town have not won a Football League game in 31 attempts, dating back to their last League season in 2011/2.

The tenner I put on them to drop straight back at 5-2 still looks a shrewd investment to me.
