Altrincham FC First Team / Re: PELE

It's difficult to compare players from different eras, but Pele was quite probably the best footballer of all time, as well as being a thoroughly decent human being.

I never saw him play live, but I was surprised to learn he took an interest at our level, attending the FA Trophy final between Woking and Dagenham and Redbridge in 1997 as a guest of honour, where somebody I know met him.

What sad news. I had heard some years ago that he was in  poor health, but I am sure he maintained his interest and love for the club from afar. I can remember him making use of the Torquay United supporters' coach for a home game.

RIP.

Sadly this it what happens when players come in on loan.

CCC could be the next to go back.

Indeed, yes, but, as a younger player,  he might go back to be loaned out again to someone higher up the food chain in League Two.

Good luck to Elliot Newby, anyway. He has had two excellent loan spells with us, once in a poor team, and once in a good team. I had hoped he would join permanently, but  feared this would happen as he has done so well.

Hall-Johnson.

How many do you reckon they (or theoretically Scunny) will bring? And how annoyed will Irons supporters be if they lose on penalties tonight? Winning on penalties at Workington  in the dog walker's cup was bad enough. And that coach...

As a guide, there were 5080 at Wrexham, which was more than double any other attendance in the round, so at least we should easily get a four figure attendance.

I don't think we will get any young scrotes trying to steal a Wrecsam flag somehow,...

Drax trains now!

I'm sure  there was talk some years ago of building one or two new stations on the Skelton to Stockport stretch, including in Baguley to link up with the metrolink. I suppose it's one of those projects that has gone by the board, like the reopening of the Carrington line, or the Western airport link from Mobberley/Ashley.

If they got the station, and trains at least every half hour, Brooklands roundabout would be ok.

You are right. There was talk about a Baguley interchange with the Metrolink, along with some other stations, although I don't think it ever went beyond talk that it would be a good idea, which it is.

As for Solihull, Birmingham/Solihull Bees actually have their own ground at Portway nowadays out in the countryside south of  Birmingham, which they share with Midlands Hurricanes RL.

A passenger route going through near on ten miles of heavily populated area without an intermediary station is a nonsense, and I wouldn't be surprised if this was unique in England - though to be fair the line might have closed by now if it wasn't for the freight.

It feels like a bit like cheating somehow, but I could give you the HS1 line which carries domestic passenger services to Kent as well as international ones, and has a run of 17 miles between stations at Stratford International and Ebbsfleet International.  Lots of the places it passes through have  stations on other lines, but so do Baguley and Gatley in between Skelton and Edgeley junctions.

I remember hearing something about Graham Heathcote phoning up the Rugby League match referee and asking or demanding that  the RL match be postponed as we had an important game the following day, and he didn't want the pitch ruined. Both games actually went ahead.
I am not 100% sure, but think this may have been before the famous 4-1 win over Barnet in 1991. Was that on Easter Saturday? If so, there would have been rugby league on the Good Friday.

If Sale & Salford City get their way at Barton, Salford Red Devils will end up at Moor Lane, tiny tiny stadium. Does anyone remember Trafford Borough at Alty ?
I do, and they had a good first half of their first season before having to sell players, and then subsisting for two and a half years  under dwindling attendances before moving back to Blackpool and eventually folding. I went quite a few times the first season, then not till the third, by which time more or less only the main stand was in use.

Rugby league is much the better game, but I fear Moor Lane would still be big enough for Salford Red Devils' crowds.

So that's it till boxing day then.
(Curzon might well be off too as the weather prospect isn't great)
Actually, the forecast I have seen is slightly better towards the end of the week, so I wouldn't give up hope for the Curzon match just yet.

"Unfriend"? Dreadful term. What's wrong with "fall out with" (although admittedly that would be the nuclear option - and ends with a preposition!).  Ugh!
Actually, unfriend is a very old term. I have just been reading a fascinating book called "The Word Hord" by Hana Videen, which is about Old English and what the words used then indicate about life at the time and how they have related to modern English.

"Wine" was then the word for "friend" and "unwine" was a standard noun for "enemy." I agree it's pretty bad when used as a verb, though.

Maybe we are going to be told that we are going to play Alsager Town in every round and find out we play someone completely different.
Also, I notice all the other ties are being played much later so there would have been plenty of time to rearrange it if Stockport really wanted to find a convenient date.

You should have wiped your feet on the way in, JD. :)

Stockport were always going to field a reserve team for this, even weaker than the team we would put out. The way this came out, it feels as if they may have been worried about the pitch once they realised they were going to have a televised reply against Charlton Athletic, although that is not until next week.
The match couldn't be switched to Moss Lane as Manchester United Women's Academy are playing Aston Villa on Wednesday afternoon, and Stockport Sports Village may also have already been booked  - you can't just cancel bookings at two days' notice with the possible effect it might have on future bookings. All pretty tinpot by Stockport County, who I assume will be fined for this.

So who is filming this? To me they are party to the matter.

Guiseley did say something, when they banned the main individual from future home and away matches, about seeking his accomplices and taking "necessary action". I would have thought anybody filming this and posting it on You Tube would count as an accomplice.

Belgium  are number two in the FIFA rankings, aren't they, although they  have  not been at their best tonight? I would hope we could get a result against Qatar, at least.

Not too many seasons later, Ipswich went on to win the football league, arguably the most remarkable football league win.
Yes, Ipswich have a remarkable history, Up to 1935, they were in the Southern Amateur League, as distinct from the Southern League, playing league matches against teams including Civil Service, Barclays Bank and Lloyds Bank!
