Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Johnny King R. I. P.

Probably the single most iconic figure in my time watching Altrincham, who achieved so much in different roles.
i am sure everybody knows, but he captained us to two Alliance Premier League championships and FA Trophy win, managed us to another FA Trophy win and our best ever run in the FA Cup, and even played a major part in saving the club's existence as a director. What achievements  (and I have left several out) and what  a character too!
RIP.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Bracknell ticket information
« on: February 04, 2023, 12:09:52 AM »
Yes,it is weird. When I went to Bracknell/Sandhurst earlier this season, they did sell adult tickets on the day, although they also offered a discount for advance e-tickets, so I duly got one. A lot of people were still paying on the day, though.

I can't see it selling it out, with an attendance of something like 900 being my guess. I am sure pushing the tickets like this will help them to estimate and plan for the total crowd, and imagine  a cash turnstile for adults will  suddenly become available, unless there is an unexpected surge for tickets (whatever that would mean for concessions who were still waiting to buy tickets), but I have no special knowledge, and don't hold back on buying a ticket based on what I say.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: How many will Wrexham bring?
« on: January 30, 2023, 10:12:16 PM »
Why? We’re going to most likely lose heavily anyway. We may as well try and make as much money from the fixture as possible to help fund the squad as we go on. We should be looking to pack in as many as we are (safely) able to.

Agreed, a touch of realism required here - our season doesn't ride on the on-pitch result, but the money we can bring in through the gate on the evening could possibly make a difference.

Okay, lets piss off anyone who stands under the gantry, and any one who stands under the flaggers stand to accomodate the once* a season fans.

Sure theyll be delighted to be moved, without comms.

We're making 2nd class fans for another side on national TV

Totally agree with Jack.
Fans are the Bedrock of any sports club, why should home fans be squeezed out just so the away fans can outnumber the home fans. The next time Altrincham FC launch a crowd funding scheme I will guarantee no Wrexham fans will be sending any donations.
I realise the income is important but surrendering home support standing room will not generate enough extra   money to make a big enough difference.

Maybe we should employ a Welsh speaking ground announcer to make the Wrexham hoards really feel at home..

As others have said this game won’t be an easy watch anyway, let’s not make it even easier for them..

Don't worry, most Wrexham fans speak good English.  ;)

Some of us can also speak some Welsh, too, though, I should add.
With an expected crowd of 4000, the majority of whom will be home fans, we surely don't want the home fans to be crammed into a restricted section of the ground. As Mrs Warbouys describes, a well supported away club gets a decent proportion of the ground. I see no reason for any greater area than that, as it's not as if the rest of the ground will be empty.

Interesting way of looking at it.
I thought most of the assessments were pretty accurate, although a bit harsh on both Gyasi and Kaja. I thought the latter has  looked like a valuable acquisition if only he could attain full fitness,  and he did play 90 minutes today, so I hope he can build on from this,

Appreciate they will want to maximise revenue from the game but they usually charge a fiver and it's £15 when we come to town.
I just double-checked and they definitely charged £10 this season, and that was after advance discount had been applied.

Is the Sandhurst pitch grass or plastic?  They converted their old ground to 3G by the look of it and use that for training and youth set up In Bracknell but first team don’t play there

It's grass. I suspect I am the only person on this board (though happy to be corrected, of course) who has seen Bracknell Town play at Bottom Meadow, Sandhurst, as I stayed over between  Bromley and Maidenhead at the start of this season, and saw Bracknell beat Harrow Borough 4-1 on the Monday night in front of 392.

They won 4-1, and should have been won by more.  They would have beaten us in August, I am confident to say, but since then, Bracknell have lost their manager to Weymouth, and their star player, Seb Bowerman to Dorking Wanderers (he was Dorking's best player against us, if I recall correctly). With our improved form since then, I would think we are favourites now.

Nonetheless, they are having a superb season in their first ever season as high as Step 3, can reach the playoffs if they do well in their games in hand, and have had their best ever run in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy, so we definitely do not want to be resting players for this match.

Other things I remember are that they offered a discount if you bought an eticket in advance (not sure if that will apply in the FA Trophy) and the  tree-lined ground is in  a public park, although obviously enclosed. There is not much elevation inside the ground, nor much standing cover, although there are plenty of seats, and it had what looked like a very plush clubhouse, although I didn't investigate that too much. It's not too far from Sandhurst station either, just the other side of the town centre, in what's quite  a small town. There didn't seem to be any obvious means of segregation, and I believe they didn't segregate for the Ipswich match, which attracted a capacity 1950.

Although their rise through the leagues is a good story, I think it has caused some upset in the area. They spent a lot of money converting Larges Lane in Bracknell to have a 3g pitch, while they shared with Sandhurst, but then moved to Sandhurst permanently in 2021, taking over the ground, and painting it black, to make it clear it was no longer Sandhurst Town's, although they still remain there as secondary tenants (the Robins of Bracknell wear red and black).  One benefit from playing in February is that it should be light at the end of the game, and you won't have to walk across the park in the dark as I had to, following a midweek game in August.

I am looking forward to this game; little did I imagine I would be returning so soon after visiting earlier this season!

I also agree. It's not just us, as I have heard at incidents at smaller relatively local clubs, such as Widnes and Prescot Cables.

One club (possibly Prescot, but I may be wrong) have banned unaccompanied minors from attending. That seems much too extreme and punishes young people who have done nothing wrong; perhaps we need some sort of junior membership scheme to encourage them to feel a responsible part of the club?

He's probably doubled his wages at least and will have a substantial length of contract so will have secured his and his family's future. How could anyone blame him for that? Plus although I feel Chesterfield are third favourites to go up, they've still got a very good shot at it. He could actually make the difference for them.

I thought I saw he had signed an 18 month contract at Chesterfield, so it may not set him up for life, but it will certainly help, and I can't blame him for going.

We did him a favour by signing him when he had certain off-field problems, but he repaid that by signing a longer contract with us meaning we get some compensation, so I will wish him all the best, apart from a certain game in a couple of weeks. His influence of the field of play has been huge, so, yes he just might make the difference for Chesterfield.

Meanwhile, I trust and hope that Phil Parkinson has plans for this likely eventuality.

If the Cheshire FA website is to be believed, and there is always a certain element of doubt about this, we are at home to Vauxhall Motors  in the quarter finals on Jan 31st. I expect the date is just the default date for the round rather than anything  confirmed.

We have rightly cricised other clubs for calling games off late and for what happened at Halifax on NYD, but we're clearly not much better, even more so when we are playing a team from some distance away. You would assume Bromley travelled up yesterday, but when you know their fans would be having an early start, surely you would have procedures in place to have an early inspection if required. Bit of a shambles.

TBF Halifax after stating earlier in the day that there would be no need for a pitch inspection then gave out zero information on their official channels for 5 hours & only confirmed it was on 40 minutes before KO & that KO was being put back by 15 minutes. I know it’s no defence for their 30 or so Bromley fans who will have come up today but the rain from about 9-10 round here this morning was spectacular so a 0900 pitch inspection wouldn’t have been much use anyway. This is the first time too tbf that I can think our relaid pitch has let us down. I feel for Bromley but don’t quite agree with all the FUME I’m seeing on the Twitter.

Thats a very fair assesment Sarf London - I was at the ground before 10 and concern had set in after the deluge - Kiosk catering waited until 11am where we had to make a go / no go decision on starting to prep and cook for the game, knowing there was a pitch inspection at 12:30, we optimistically went for on, but it wasnt to be :-(

Wait - you knew there was going to be a 12.30 pitch inspection from 11AM. Not down to you, but why on earth was the possibility of an inspection not announced until 12? It wouldn't have helped the travelling Bromley fans, but I know some "semi-local" fans had wasted journeys, and could have made their own judgements earlier, and at least held on a bit longer before commencing a journey.

As a volunteer, Who got an early morning call to to get out of bed to try and get the game on and Bromley had arrived the night before, we did our best. The ref at 12-30 said no.
Just speaking for myself. The forecast said 8mm last night, but we got 16mm, most of it was at 9am this morning, you can’t go to Tesco and ask a ref to do a pitch inspection.
After some comments made by some on Twitter and this site, I’m thinking of quitting and leaving up to them.
Remember, ALTY wouldn’t survive without volunteers.

There is no criticism of the volunteers from me, at least. The fact that the inspection took people by surprise may even be a tribute as  most had no suspicion that the game would be off.
However, one of the main advantages of social media is that it saves volunteers from having to field telephone calls every few minutes to ask if the game is on. If it's known at 1100 that there will be an inspection at 1230, and fair enough if it can't be done earlier, then it should be posted then and not be delayed until 1200. At least Halifax thought it was worthwhile to post an update in the morning, although it was incorrect!

Cleethorpes Town are managed by our ex-player Nathan Arnold. I think they play in Cleethorpes now,but used to play in Grimsby, and Grimsby Borough play on the same site. However, I might, understandably, be getting confused.

There's a young chap (Billingsley?) scoring a few goals at youth and reserve level.

Anyone got any info on him?
Yes, it is Lewis Billingsley, who has been very prolific at that level.

He has recently gone on loan to Ashton Athletic in the North West Counties Premier, where he scored two goals on his debut. He certainly looks like he might be one for the future, but I imagine he will go on loan somewhere higher again as the next step.

I see Mike Clegg has joined as Chief Scout from Ashton after the two recent hidings they were given.

Well connected fella in non league circles, should hopefully open up some new avenues for us.

Is he the ex man u player who retired from playing in his mid to late twenties?
If so, isn't he still on the staff there?

I think he is somebody different who just happens to have the same name.

Yes, the difference from Boxing Day was that we left the substitutions too late, and they made an immediate difference., but only after Halifax had equalised.

As for the late incident, surely Dinanga was offside anyway (assuming the offside call was correct, which it looked to be), whether or not he touched the ball, as he was clearly in a position where he could score a goal and was therefore interfering with play.

I am delighted with the four points from Halifax over Christmas, I should add.
