Incidentally, I wouldn't fancy living in one of those houses that backed onto the away end!

You’re not alone. Very odd layout whereby the away fans have to walk through Brookside to reach the turnstiles.

Surely not as odd as walking through the library, and past the indoor pool at York?
Maybe we could introduce something more interesting for our away fans. Maybe a winding pathway trough the allotments from the King George to the turnstiles.

Fans used to walk through a cow field to get in at Cambridge.

On that note,we have sometimes had to walk up down and  a hill in the park (was that some sort of Army exercise?) to get to the away end at Aldershot, and I think there was something similar on my one visit to Boreham Wood.

It seems ironic how two games in successive weeks both ended in draws, ignoring penalty shootouts, but felt so different.

Last week, we should have been out of sight against Halifax long before the end, but today we weren't in the game at all against a mediocre Oldham team until that dramatic turnaround at the end, with first thoughts being that we suddenly started playing when it's too late
I can only think that the players were fired up by the injustice of what looked like a very harsh red card from a referee who seemed intent on favouring the ex-EFL team, and I was especially pleased for Tyrese Sinclair who seemed distraught at the end of the Halifax match.

As a friend,  who is a lapsed Southend supporter , has pointed out to me, once they started ensuring they paid their players, their form has dropped off!

Don't know what I'm missing there but I would have thought it would have made for an improvement? Could be a coincidence I suppose but it suggests that there's even more going on there that the outside world doesn't know about which is unsettling and/or demotivating them?
I think it's probably just an amusing coincidence, but as Ron Martin has borrowed money to pay off HMRC, I think the problem has just been kicked down the road to resurface in the future.
He has put the club up for sale but it remains to be seen what his conditions are for any bidders.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Ticket details for semi final
« on: March 16, 2023, 10:59:12 PM »
No problem with any of that.

As an aside I didn't get scanned by the metal detectors at York. Did anyone else?

I had my bag searched and tagged. I didn't get scanned though.

Nor did I. I had even managed to attract the attention of a steward as the person in front  in the queue was having problems scanning their ticket, but my request for help was answered with a mouthed response which seemed to end in "off",

I am sure the stewards for the semi-final will be more helpful and professional and, yes, we do need arrangements like those described for a big crowd.

Of course any work extending or even modernising the ground would get complaints from the sort of locals who buy a house near a football ground then complain there is a football ground nearby!!!

You know the sort: who buy a house by a church and complain about the bells or a house in the country and complain about farmyard noises!

Very true. Unfortunately, there are people like that who just complain as a sort of reflex (I am sure I remember there  even being complaints when we had plans for shorter floodlight pylons with lights which had less spillage, if that's the right term).

As people have already said, there aren't really alternative sites in the town, and it would be foolish to move out, so we would have to try to work with or around these people, and try to win over the more reasonable - perhaps emphasising how any developments improve the appearance of the ground? Not a great answer, but I think that's where we are.

« on: March 12, 2023, 09:26:47 PM »
Came across a few gripes on the York press site about queues to get in. York need to have a review of how the ticket sales were managed / assistance to get a circa 50% capacity crowd in.
Yes I have also heard from people who were trying to get in on the home side that tickets weren't working, and that it was getting quite frantic just before 3PM. The football club were blaming the Stadium Management Company and vice versa.

The York Knights rugby league team share the stadium, but previously didn't publish their attendances, as they didn't believe what the Stadium Management Company said. Apparently, they do now, but it takes 24 hours to get a figure. Therefore, when the SMC say the away attendance was 663, but everybody who was there thinks it was higher, I would go with the latter.

I always thought this thing was an U23 competition (like the Olympics), no idea where I got that one from...?

Not wrong at all. That was certainly the case when there was a tournament, but I don't think that necessarily applied to the England-Wales friendly which did not have to follow those rules.

The Cymru C team only seem to select players who play in the Welsh domestic system, otherwise Eddy and James Jones would both have had a good shout for being selected.

FT. Hindley Juniors 1 Alty 1

I went there today, for the first time I have seen the womens' team this season. Although they are rock-bottom of the league, Hindley were full value for their draw, and at least they were present at tbe scheduled start time, unlike our team who did not leave the dressing room until gone five past two!
I am guessing we miss Charlotte Higginson, who was captain and leading goalscorer, but has just joined Bury AFC?

I see Mike Clegg has joined as Chief Scout from Ashton after the two recent hidings they were given.

Well connected fella in non league circles, should hopefully open up some new avenues for us.

Is he the ex man u player who retired from playing in his mid to late twenties?
If so, isn't he still on the staff there?

I think he is somebody different who just happens to have the same name.

Ah, okay. Thanks for that SH.

Talking of Michael Clegg (as we were, last month), our chief scout is expected to become the new Warrington Rylands manager according to the Warrington Guardian.

An obituary has now been published on the Wigan Athletic club website.

As some of us had suspected (!), he was almost three years older than his official profile in the pen pictures of match programmes.

One error: he had been playing for Kirkby Town for at least a couple of seasons prior to his first appearance at Moss Lane on New Year's Day 1971:

Another error is that I am pretty sure he managed Bangor City after leaving us in 1998 before Ashton United, but it's a good write-up.

South Liverpool have also published a tribute for his short but instantly successful  spell in management there, featuring yet another date of birth. I already had my doubts and can only think that he knocked a couple of years off whenever he moved to a new club!

Sad news......one of the many people who welcomed non Alty born and bred newbies like me into the club 20 odd years ago.
Her calming down of Dennis post match was something I always smile about

Very sad news, and your tribute to Jenny made me smile too. RIP.

I am not guaranteed to be right but think they originally shared at Sandhurst while the artificial pitch was being put in at Bracknell. Then they returned to Bracknell before soon deciding to take over the ground at Sandhurst, as that had more scope for development as they hope to move up the leagues.
There is certainly space in the ground and no houses nearby to object against planning permission.

60
They're only playing where they are whilst arranging for a new ground to be sought back in Bracknell as I understand it.
I am not so sure that's true, actually. They have taken over Bottom Meadow in Sandhurst, repainted it, and I thought they saw it as a long term plan to develop Bottom Meadow, rather than return to Bracknell, even though they had spent a lot of money on Larges Lane there. As has been said, they are very well funded and have probably got a National South level team for their first ever season at step 3.

When I saw them in August (have I mentioned that?), I don't recall any automatic gates, but showed my ticket to a human being (I can't recall if it was scanned or just a visual check). They are a wealthy club, though, and may  perhaps have been erected some automatic gates since then.
