Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Wealdstone Match Thread
« on: March 27, 2024, 08:45:17 AM »
A game of two halves but ultimately another comfortable Tuesday home night.

I thought Wealdstone went off like the clappers, high press, very aggressive & strong running & deserved to take the lead. Our quick equaliser really deflated them though & at half time I was fairly confident. The brilliant early strike by Wilson (what technique, him & Marriot in CM next season is very interesting prospect) settled the nerves & then a lovely little lay off by Mooney (encouraging signs he’s getting back to his level) & superb finish by Banks & it was game over. Fourth put the gloss although I reckon it was Wilson again rather than Linney.

Absolutely has to be followed up at Kiddy on Friday though. Halifax with their two games in hand, are Solihull dropping out, so many twists & turns. Crowd of 1,700 home fans on a wet Tuesday night & with England on TV was very encouraging too. If we get s result vs Kiddy should be 4k plus easy vs Latics I think.

Weakdstone should be ok I think but they looked completely knackered by the second half as a few of us suspected at half time. When you are in the scrap down there you have to go a bit more horses for courses. Thought they went off too quickly & consequently were very easy for us to pick off second half. Massive credit to the 37 away fans.

Absolute must win if we are to have any hope of scraping one of the final play off spots. Linney to start the obvious change but not entirely sure where we are with the back four & we are now entering the four games in nine days period so some kind of rotation is inevitable. Hopefully Wealdstones ridiculous schedule will catch up with them with this being their 3rd league game since last Weds. Crowd won’t be great either I fear around the 1,500 mark after blowing a big chance on Saturday. Flip side recent Tuesday night atmospheres vs Dorking & York with just the hardcore in have been much better.

Yeah agreed. I think from here winning all our home games & at least 4 points on the road will be required. Step by step though beating Wealdstone at home on Tues night is an absolute must.

The decision to televise the game means we get a £7k tv fee, which pretty much balances out gate receipts from if we gave Oldham say an extra 500 tickets. Therefore, I’d be surprised now if Oldham got any additional tickets when a) we don’t really need the cash and b) they can all watch it on the box and c) it would give them a leg up in a crucial game where every little card we can stack in our favour we must take.

And let’s be honest, in a far from full Boundary Park last Saturday Chesterfield didn’t get anywhere near a full away allocation, so they can get back in their box if they start whining about it.

I reckon tomorrow with the usual limited Gateshead away support we’ll still have over 3000 in, so with a positive result in tomorrows key game then I can see Oldham home ticket sales ticking up & ideally something around 3,500 home fans in would be possible.

Tremendous night’s entertainment. Got an early lead & never looked back. Having Justin in makes a huge difference & Newby & Kosylo roasted their defence in the first half. That’s got to be the front 4 set up now of choice if Linney is out. The second goal which was a fine counter attack finished off by Justin my pick of the goals but Mooney’s set up & CCC driven finish for the 5th also worth highlighting.

But York though, wow. They were atrocious. Their poor keeper blundered horrendously for our opener and the 4th goal (arguably the two crucial goals of the night) & Newby made him look silly for the 6th. The worst side I’ve seen us play this season by a long way. Real shame as it’s one of the better & more local days out but they are doomed.

Maybe tempted to give Mooney a start & see if it gives Newby a kick up the arse. Whilst Marriotts serious looking injury on Saturday a big blow if it gives young George Wilson a chance to kick on no bad thing. I like him as a player & his attitude so give him a taste between now & the end of the season.

It’s two sides in pretty desperate form albeit York are in a far more desperate position than us so another one about a month ago I’d have said we’d win comfortably but who knows now.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Woking Match Thread
« on: March 10, 2024, 07:39:53 PM »

It worries me a little that our issue is clearly lack of numbers, the available players are running on empty and yet there appear to be no funds whatsoever for a couple of short-term replacements.

I suspect that the construction of the current squad has already required a fair degree of financial investment this season.

Remember that one of our probably highest-paid players, Crankshaw, is presently completely out of the picture.

This shouldn’t be overlooked. Two big name & experienced players at this level in Crankshaw & Joey Jones will be on a good whack & have barely played a minute between them. Add to James Jones also being out for long periods & then there’s Byrne-obvs he’ll be off in the summer but he was signed as our first choice GK & will be on a decent wage again. So, when people say ‘get Maxi on loan’ or whoever then there’s x4 first team squad players who will be costing a pretty penny but have contributed little on the pitch all season. So, the Board can’t just go throwing money at it when you see the bigger picture.

Another must win for me. Can’t let all the effort & hard work from Tuesday go to waste. Agree with others that Justin if fit starts ahead of Angus & behind him it’s the same 3 as Tuesday. I feel CCC is due a big performance & one of his spectaculars. GK the other debate, Gould was excellent on Tuesday night but if fit Ross has to come back in, no question.

Attendance the now standard Saturday 2200ish I reckon, maybe 120 from Woking who do have good support. See they’ve picked up a bit in recent games but I’d back us at home against any of the relegation threatened sides.

That was magnificent by the lads tonight. What looked like a comfortable return to form was turned on its head by Linneys red card. Second half it was like we were the away team at the Etihad, barely left our own half, Dorking had all the ball & we had to work ever so hard off the ball. But the resilience, attitude & desire were tremendous. If Linneys was a red card then so was the one after we scored our first. Dorkings attitude really disappointed me, desperately trying to get Kosylo sent off & going down like there was a sniper in the main stand. Let’s hope they go down.

Linney being out for 3 games is a problem but we have a few days to work on the shape & a solution & make it back to back home wins against Woking on Saturday now.

Good to catch up with some of the lads over a few beers round Liverpool St before KO but that was about it.

Astonishingly we took the lead then barely left our half after that in the first half. Southend just kept coming down our LHS & throwing crosses towards Cardwell & Dackers & it was inevitable they’d pick up the second pieces sooner or later. They also pressed us really well for the first hour-we couldn’t get out. The one thought was that all the crosses they put along our six yard line there might have been second thoughts with Ross fit (which he will be soon).

Second half as they naturally dropped off we had a lot more of the ball but it was largely in front of them & as long as they kept their shape & shuttled across we didn’t really open them up. Mooney looked lively when he came on tbf-if we could just pay 6000 people to boo him every game he’d be bang up for it no doubt.

It was much better than Maidenhead but the team need to give us something to hold on to starting this Saturday. Season is rapidly fading away now.

After having our pants pulled down bigtime on Saturday we need a response. Am looking forward to ticking a new ground for me & the lads looking to make amends. Not sure of team or result but fingers crossed.

I usually leave around 12.00 to go to home games,  does anybody think that there is a risk of it not being on.
Cheers

I think it will be fine. Crucially there’s no rain forecast tomorrow & should actually be some sun a couple of hours before kick off. If there was going to be a pitch inspection (assuming part time Maidenhead will just be travelling up on the day) sure it would have been announced by now as guess they’d need to leave no later then about 0930. Pitch will be heavy again needless to say.

Maidenhead know the drill at this level & all their recent away games have been tight & low scoring. That said, it’s absolutely a game we have to win if we are serious about the play offs. Assume it’s our standard first XI back in, although again Parky will have one eye on Southend the following Tuesday too. No City or United clashes on Saturday so hoping we can push towards 2,500 again. I’ll say 2-0 Alty in front of 2,358 (56 away).

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Crowds
« on: February 18, 2024, 12:44:30 PM »
Are we all delusional?? What crowds have we got over the past 10 years or beyond?Every club has an ultimate crowd potential. Why have we not got more crowds over the years? I fear we are being bamboozled. If we do not get promoted how many will we get next season? Not 2500 for sure even week..Mark my words. Nice ambition but  not realistic

Consistent attendances of 2000 plus was delusional thinking in the NPL season when we were regularly still getting crowds 500-600 and that was only a few years ago. We’ve also never been as successful as we are now (certainly in the last 25 years anyway)

Spot on. If we can average 2,100 for two seasons when we were far closer to the relegation battle then the play offs, then thinking a PO chasing side can average 2,500 is a realistic ambition IMO. Parky is enormously respected at our level now & his words carry weight so I’m glad he’s put this out. The club is not going back to 650 in the Unibond League & we have a new reality & ceiling now with more to come.

Alas, that definitely rivalled the defeat at Rochdale as being our worst performance of the season, to date.

I can't identify a single component of our machine that didn't malfunction.

I don't think that anyone did themselves justice there and even Eddy Jones was uncharacteristically well off the pace. Aldershot rarely attain a clean sheet!

So many passes that went astray; standing off them far too much for both goals; an unaccustomed dearth of potency up front and substitutes who were unable to change the narrative in any shape.

I'll be interested to listen to Phil Parkinson's assessment in due course.

It was a perfect storm of disappointing results for us in the league today.

The highlight of the TV broadcast was seeing Hughesy's dapper cap amongst the Alty faithful.

Hoping that was a one-off and things will be much better at Hartlepool on Tuesday evening.

Absolutely. A collective off night. Aldershot looked much the sharper & were full value for the win. I was really impressed by them at our place back in October so wasn’t surprised at their levels last night.

The caravan moves on quickly though & it’s a very tough looking trip to Hartlepool now who have really picked up since firing John Askey & getting Kevin Philips in. Need to get back on the horse there. I’d take a point.
