Bottom of Moss Lane still closed off for the resurfacing work as I came home at 6.30 this evening. That's a bit inconvenient for tomorrow, unless they are planning to finish the work in the morning.

looking forward to the game, but not a full moss lane. this ground is not suitable for crowds of this size.

sounds like we've been mugged by a quickly taken free kick. how many times have we seen that over the years?

A long time ago Alty played Crewe in the first round of the FA Cup. The game was rescheduled because Neil Lennon was playing for N.Ireland on the original date, so it got played on a Tuesday night.

Crewe eventually won 1-0 to a Dele Adebole second half goal.

I recall the Crewe midfield being run by a blonde haired player with a very trendy hairstyle. I asked the guy next to me if I could look at his programme to check the player's name. My memory tells me it said No.8 Robbie Savage.

A few years ago the game was getting discussed on here and I mentioned this. I was told that wasn't Robbie Savage, it was another player who's name now I can't remember.

So last night I had the golden opportunity to ask the man himself when I found myself sitting in front of him in the Family Stand. "Robbie, did you play here for Crewe in the FA CUP?" "No, that wouldn't have been me he said".

So there we are. But a) who was it? b) why did I think it was Robbie Savage? Does anyone have the programme and/or the team sheet from that night to help me prove I'm half right, and he was at least listed in the programme if not actually on the pitch?
Could the player be Mark Gardiner

looking up photos i would say he's not the player i remember seeing. i need to find a programme really.

Great quote from Maher after the match, bemoaning their bad luck.
"Ralphy hits the post in the first half, a foot either side and it's in!"
The basic geography of football goalposts is obviously beyond him.

my view about hitting post or cross bar is that you missed. it's nothing to do with luck.

What was the name of that reserve keeper we had in the 94/95 season? Nearest I ever came to seeing him play was when he pulled his hamstring in the warm up and had to be substituted even before the game started. (There does seem to be a running theme in this thread about me not being able to remember things).

Looking at the weather forecast for the next few days I hope the pitch inspection is arranged nice and early, like this afternoon perhaps.

Forecast isn't that bad, match should go ahead.

apart from the rain all day tomorrow, rain all day friday, and rain all day saturday it looks great!

the player i am thinking of definitely wasn't gareth whalley having googled photos. i still think it was robbie savage. i'd love someone to dig up the team sheet, or if they can remind me of the date i'll try and find the report in john laidlar's archive. this same player was at the alty game the week before watching with dario gradi. looks like it was 95/96 season.

Back when Mark Harris was chairman they were exploring the possibility of building a new ground in Sale between the petrol station and the M60 junction on the left close to where the TGI Friday's used to be. I don't recall why that plan came to nothing but it wouldn't exactly be Alty FC would it, having said that the AJ Bell isn't exactly Sale.

Around the time the pop side was remodelled (so it could potentially take seating) I asked some at the club what the possibilty of enlarging the Golf Road would be and was told there'd be planning problems making it higher as it would restrict light to the Golf Road houses. Don't know if that would still apply would it wouldn't surprise me.

According to the BBC sport live guide BBC Radio Kent managed to carry online commentary of Ebbsfleet, Dover and Maidstone today. Radio Surrey had Woking, Aldershot and Dorking. Time to be lobbying Radio Manchester. They don't even need to provide the staff.

Kent have only one EFL club (Gillingham) while Surrey don't have any. Radio Manchester's catchment area has considerably more clubs higher up the pyramid than us.

Would be interesting to know if anyone has actually pitched them about it though. We are talking about online which they don't do for the league clubs. Alty already have their own commentators so its not like BBC would have to pay for any. All that's needed is the tech. Some people round here seem to give up very easily.
