Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Wealdstone Match Thread
« on: March 26, 2024, 11:07:32 PM »
I imagine PP's talk at half time included the words "if we pass to each other this half rather than to our opponents we might do better".

The first half was as poor as anything I've seen this season - it was the 6th minute before an Alty player touched the ball in Wealdstone's half, and Dan Mooney immediately lost possession. Once we got on our game after the break it became rapidly apparent that to call Wealdstone "mediocre" would be quite an understatement. Kiddy on Friday will be a much tougher proposition, and we need to be on our game for 90 minutes, not 45.

Oxford City in a vital final game has Eastbourne stamped all over it.

It's been 42 years since we beat York City in the FA Cup to earn the right to one of our finest hours in the the next round, knocking out then top-flight Birmingham City. We've not come a long way since then in terms of our progress up the pyramid - indeed we could be argued to have dropped back just a touch - but back then beating the Minstermen was very much a "giant killing". Looking at the current state of affairs at York one rather has to feel sorry for them. Next season they look nailed on to be routinely playing the likes of Rushall Olympic and Radcliffe, and when you consider that they'll be sharing that "privilege" with other ex League clubs like Chester, Southport, Darlington, Boston and the reformed Hereford and Scarborough....yes, we HAVE progressed.

Elephant....room....has CCC picked up an injury from the relentless kicking he received? We only had four fit players on the bench again (If Amaluzor is 100% I'm pretty sure he'd have been given a run) and if CCC isn't fit, and with Linney definitely out, we're going to struggle for cover. We certainly need Donowa back (played a full match for Chorley last night, and his long throw would give us an extra tactic), and a loan striker would be of real benefit.

Didn’t get to see this or the Hartlepool game but the fact we don’t look like we can get back into games is particularly worrying. I imagine our points gained from losing positions stats would make for interesting reading. Beyond the one point at Bromley due to Newby’s excellent free kick, I’m struggling…

We were a goal down at home to Hartlepool back in September and came back to draw 2-2, but otherwise it's a depressing picture. I'm more concerned that we've lost three consecutive matches from a winning position.

If the idea of sending Donowa to Chorley is to get him match fit, bringing him on as an 83rd minute substitute at Brackley this evening seems to make it a fruitless exercise.

I actually think we will win this - a 4th consecutive defeat is unthinkable.

It isn't unthinkable if play as poorly as we did on Saturday. Dackers is bound to score, so we'll need to score twice....

That's 4 managers dispensed with in little over a year. It's nearly as big a poisoned chalice as the Birmingham City job.

Playoffs my arse. That was embarrassing.

Dropping from 4th to 8th demonstrates amply that the playoffs are not going to be easy to break into. I'd be confident about Saturday if I could see where the goals might come from, but Linney was rather anonymous tonight, while Angus just isn't good enough at this level. Obviously the goalkeeping position is also a cause for concern too - we need Ethan back PDQ.

A really good team performance once we weathered the early storm. I really must single out George Wilson, who looked outstanding during his late cameo.

The rain appears unable to tell the time as it's still at it here in Timperley well after 2pm. It was never particularly heavy though, and looks to be close to stopping. We should be OK 🤞

We'd have been better off with Elton John...

I'm not sure why we need him. Cooper, Baines, Roscoe, Burroughs......

Another thing that catches the eye on the Pink front page is Southport's 3-2 defeat at Watford in Division 4. At the end of that season Watford were the runaway champions, but Southport failed to gain re-election. Their chairman subsequently declined the chance for them to join us in the new Alliance League because he thought it was "a benefit for the Southern clubs". Poor misguided soul....
