Altrincham FC First Team / Re: York City Match Thread.
« on: March 13, 2024, 11:45:13 PM »
It's been 42 years since we beat York City in the FA Cup to earn the right to one of our finest hours in the the next round, knocking out then top-flight Birmingham City. We've not come a long way since then in terms of our progress up the pyramid - indeed we could be argued to have dropped back just a touch - but back then beating the Minstermen was very much a "giant killing". Looking at the current state of affairs at York one rather has to feel sorry for them. Next season they look nailed on to be routinely playing the likes of Rushall Olympic and Radcliffe, and when you consider that they'll be sharing that "privilege" with other ex League clubs like Chester, Southport, Darlington, Boston and the reformed Hereford and Scarborough....yes, we HAVE progressed.
It was York in the 4th round after we beat Birmingham in the 3rd round. 2nd round was Blackpool wasn’t it?

Yes, 4th round was York away. Lost 2 or 3 nil I think?
Yes, 2-0.
We did beat York 42 years ago, though, but then we lost 6-1 to Burnley in the next round.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Loans needed
« on: February 27, 2024, 10:08:26 PM »
There was certainly a strong case for recalling Justin Donawa tonight, if that is available under the loan agreement, especially as Banks was out and we couldn't even name a full bench.
He was a substitute for Chorley against Brackley and only came on in the 83rd minute, so I am not sure what benefit he gets from this loan.

Great posts, Ukrainian Alty, which do bring back the memories. I hope your health improves.

I think we also had special trains for the Rotherham Fa Cup game in 1979, and for all three FA Trophy Finals.  We certainly did for the first two, whixh I used, but I was living on the south coast at the time of the 1986 final against Runcorn; I travelled north to Wembley then, where I met some family friends who had been given a bottle of pop or something by my mother to give to me, but it was confiscated by the Metropolitan Police so I never even saw it!

That's not the ex Southend, Barrow etc bloke?
He's probably had more tanning sessions than the legendary Phil 'Pancho' Wilson!

Also he's only about eight years younger than me! 🤯

I hadn't seen that coming and nor had most Kidderminster supporters who don't seem very impressed.

Apparently, I'm told, there's only one tanning salon in the town so this probably will be a short-term appointment.  ;D

Thanks for posting the 1957 programme, Ukrainian Alty.

I enjoy all our history and, in a weird way, a mediocre season like 1956-57 when we finished 16th, with Northwich Victoria winning the league (boo!) is more intriguing than the more successful seasons a few years later with Freddie Pye and Jack Swindells et al of which so much more is known.

I did read once that we first produced a programme against Sutton when we joined the Lancashire Combination in 1911, but no copies are thought to survive.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was going to refer to what it meant for Marcus Dackers' loan with us.

I still think any managerial change is more likely to lead to him being recalled, if only so that the new manager can have a look at him, rather than Phil Parkinson being offered the job, let alone taking it.

Sounds like a perfect evening, well gauged selection by the management team.
Bruno Andrade? Are we giving him another trial or something? Very puzzling.
It is puzzling. He started for Chesham United on Saturday.

A very professional performance from a fairly strong team tonight led to a comfortable victory though Stalybridge had their moments, and we didn't quite shut up their irritating loudmouth fan - "Shoot!!" even when it was in their half.

Knowing our luck, either Truro or Blyth away. 😂

At least, Truro lost to Hungerford so we won't go there (or to Plymouth, where they play currently). I still see contradictory statements as to whether or not is regionalised in the 3rd Round, but we'll find out tomorrow.

If it is national, I reckon the furthest in the south east and south west are Hythe Town and Torquay United.

That was brilliant There was so much to take in during that interview that it's hard to comment sensibly but Tony was in fine form and I note that he believes we are doing things the right way now.

« on: November 11, 2023, 10:00:01 PM »
For me, the way we withstood the 10 minute spell of pressure around the 70 minute mark showed how much progress we've made. We'd have conceded a goal - or even two- in a similar sustained attacking spell last season. We've really grown as a team.
Yes, that was the main thing for me too today, although I thought it was a bit later, just after James Jones came on in a bid to form a more defensive formation. I am not sure whether I said or just thought that Southend can't keep up that pressure for too long, and that, provided we got through that spell, we would be okay.

We did get through, and scored a second goal, and even could have scored a third, which Regan Linney probably would have got if he was at full match sharpness, if you know what I mean, but that margin would have been harsh on a very good Southend team; I do admire the togetherness of their players  management and supporters, who rightly applauded them for their efforts at the end, but not their departing ownership.

As for the minute's silence, people should really know, but maybe it needed an announcement to say that you should not applaud at the start of a minute's silence...

« on: November 09, 2023, 08:49:59 PM »
I agree that it's great they are playing at home.

The thing is,though, that they apparently have an average home gate of around 150 and are only 3 miles from Charlton, so a good number of "home" fans will actually be Charlton fans, many of whom will genuinely like both teams. In a local context, I think it's a bit like Cheadle Town getting a home cup replay against Stockport County.

I do know someone who went to the first game at the Valley, so I will ask if he knows if there are any attempts to prioritise any categories to ensure that they can get match tickets.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Promotion latest odds
« on: November 01, 2023, 10:33:24 PM »
I don't bet, but those odds at the start of the season were ridiculous, as we looked  to have a decent mid-table side looking at the players signed
Since then we have surpassed my expectations, especially considering all the injuries we have had. The current odds look much more realistic, but I can't see us reaching the play-offs, making the Trophy Final and also retaining the management team; it would be a great season, but if we achieve the first two, then the third becomes ever more unlikely, I regret to say.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Trialists
« on: October 22, 2023, 09:46:37 AM »
I'm really surprised that Sean Lawton hasn't been picked up by a club, given he was fairly highly regarded at Crewe - but we just don't need another left back, particularly given that we still have Liam Brockbank on the books at the moment too.
Sean  Lawton played for Nantwich Town yesterday. They mention he has been signed on dual registration forms from us, so we must still have him on non-contract forms which probably doesn't mean a lot as he would have been on them to play in the Cheshire Senior Cup. They also say he got injured in the summer when he had a trial at another club,

What's the longest journey we could make with an away draw? That's who we'll draw. Just getting a negative vibe about it somehow.
Nothing to do with us, but Chelmsford City won their replay tonight, which means Whitby have to go down there... in a regionalised round.
