« on: October 29, 2019, 11:42:20 AM »
For info to intending train travellers - BR website says engineering work between Ely & Kings Lynn on Saturday & Sunday; replacement bus service in operation, leaving Ely at 4 minutes past the hour & taking 1hr 23 min to reach Lynn.

Saturday February 16th 1991 - Alty 9 Merthyr Tydfil 2. No chance of a similar scoreline this afternoon to mark that particular anniversary, I suppose ...

Altrincham FC First Team / 1966 and all that ...
« on: January 22, 2019, 12:01:25 PM »
For the historically minded - 53 years ago today we made our first appearance in the FA Cup 3rd Round, at Molineux against Wolves. It was before my time - my first game was in 1968. We lost 5-0 but it was our first defeat of the season!

Altrincham FC First Team / Hereford
« on: October 28, 2018, 08:20:23 PM »
For those planning to go to Hereford on Saturday next - it seems they operate a cashless admission system (i.e. you have to get a ticket from the ticket office & take it to the turnstile). For what it's worth they offer online booking - I used it today; it seems simple enough, & it cuts down the amount of cash needed on the day, but you still have to go to the office & pick up the physical ticket. From the look of the info on their website visiting fans will get the same rather pokey bit of the far (Edgar St.) side stand and terrace that we got many moons ago. I pass the info on in case it helps anyone planning to attend! 15 to sit down, 13 to stand.

Altrincham FC First Team / Darlington
« on: August 21, 2018, 07:57:13 PM »
For what it's worth, the Darlington FC website has details of how to get discounted tickets in advance online. If I can make it work - which I have done - then anyone can! By the by - their definition of a senior concession is age 62. Wrinklies like me please note!

Altrincham FC First Team / Looking ahead ...
« on: June 05, 2018, 02:16:43 PM »
I notice that the League fixtures are currently scheduled to be published on July 4th. I presume the season proper will start on August 11th - does anyone have definite information on that? Any thoughts as to opening fixture - Hereford away would be the stuff of nightmares as far as I'm concerned so the pessimist in me thinks that's what we'll get landed with! By the by - does anyone know if we're going to be required to play the equivalent of the old NPL Champions v League Cup winners (Peter Swales Memorial Trophy was what I think it was called) as a pre-season game?

Altrincham FC First Team / Shaw Lane

See Club website for a story re the possibility of Shaw Lane being fined &/or deducted points for fielding an ineligible player v Warrington.

Altrincham FC First Team / Advance Warning
« on: March 19, 2017, 07:32:17 PM »
... to those planning to go to Bradford by train next Saturday, The line between Todmorden & Halifax will be closed for engineering work & the trains replaced by buses, adding about 45 minutes each way to journey time. Might be better for those starting out from the Alty area to go via Leeds? Suggest you check out the relevant webpage(s).

Altrincham FC First Team / Worcester Chairman's comments
« on: February 14, 2017, 02:10:12 PM »
From his column in a recent match programme, as reported on our club website -
"One of the main issues with the league ... is the lack of budget caps on players' wages and the weight of money coming in from the newer clubs that have entered this league. It makes it virtually impossible to compete at a level that is going to please everybody and we will need to wake up to that fact sooner or later."
This is of course from the perspective of a club which is obliged to ground-share and is currently under considerable financial pressure (as witness the fact that all their players are effectively available for transfer), and his point about budget caps on players' wages is not one I would seek to defend, but what he says about some newer clubs' financial clout and the way that affects the rest makes a degree of sense to me. I wonder what others think?

Altrincham FC First Team / Dawber departs
« on: January 30, 2017, 06:20:32 PM »
See club website. I presume Clee has been designated emergency goalkeeper lately, but I do think a second recognised goalkeeper is needed. Maybe the powers that be have someone in mind - hope so, as I still don't believe Deasy is 100% physically fit.

Altrincham FC First Team / Worst ever ...
« on: January 22, 2017, 06:49:56 PM »
League placing - bottom of the Cheshire League twice - once may just be in someone's living memory (1952-3) but the other is definitely history (1929-30).
Points total for season - again, one is just about in living memory -1960-61 22 pts. from 42 games (which would equate to 30 pts. under modern system); and the other one isn't - 1928-9 23 pts, from 38 games (equating to 31 pts. under modern system).
This season may very easily beat the points record; the question of lowest ever league placing is more subjective, but it's a sad commentary on affairs that either matter should be exercising my tiny mind!

Non Altrincham FC Talk / Graham Taylor R.I.P.
« on: January 12, 2017, 01:54:16 PM »
Just heard on the radio that Graham Taylor, the former England manager, has died. He was 72. Very sad news - he was an honest man who did his honest best & later became one of the better analysts on BBC Radio in particular. Not a good way to start the year.

Altrincham FC Reserve Team / Richman plays for reserves
« on: January 08, 2017, 04:20:00 PM »
Team list for yesterday's game at Styal (won 3-1) includes Simon Richman. I suppose he could possibly play some part on Wednesday in the CSC with a view to playing in partnership with Jones on Saturday in a rather more important game. That combination is one I would like to see.

Altrincham FC First Team / Large turnover of players
« on: December 11, 2016, 01:34:33 PM »
In response to Cult on another thread - I count 41 players named on team-sheets so far this season, of whom 2 (Foster & A. Jones) have not made it on to the pitch. Of the 41 a total of 5 (Foster, Hasler-Cregg, Jones, McDonald & Menagh) have only featured as substitutes, which leaves 36 starters so far. In 1964-5 we used 37 players - there were no subs back then - which I suspect might be the previous highest, so assuming the new Jones starts next Saturday that will have been equalled & may well be eclipsed before the end of the calendar year!
