Altrincham FC First Team / The last time we finished 4th...
« on: Yesterday at 11:46:43 PM »
Should we manage it tomorrow, it's worth reminding ourselves that the last time we finished 4th, 29 years ago...

    There were no playoffs
    Macc Town were champions
Of the 21 clubs in the league:
    • Only one, Stevenage, is now a Football League club.
    • Five, including us, are National League.
    • Nine are in leagues below us.
    • Seven have either folded and reformed as phoenix clubs or folded and disappeared altogether.

Altrincham FC First Team / The run in
« on: March 31, 2024, 02:26:40 PM »
Looking at the remaining fixtures there are now, realistically, eight teams vying for the six playoff spots. A victory for us tomorrow could put Oldham out of the picture so it's almost seven (almost!)

Top three is all but settled - it would take a collapse for Bromley and Barnet not to comfortably take the prime playoff spots. Top five, though, is in reach for Alty. With our goal difference, 77 points should be enough for that, possibly 76, which means dropping no more than two points and certainly no more than three if we want home advantage in the first playoff game.

Top seven is starting to look comfortable (whisper it quietly though). 73 points should see us finish in the playoff places, which means dropping no more than six points in our last four games.

Some key six-pointers to look out for over these last three weeks:

1/4 Alty V Oldham (not as crucial as it might seem with Oldham almost out of the picture but a win for Alty would narrow the playoff field and see Oldham cut adrift)

10/4 Halifax V Oldham (an Oldham victory or a draw would be most helpful to us here)

13/4 Barnet V Halifax (With Barnet's top three finish almost assured, a Barnet win would be most helpful here as Halifax are the bigger threat to us but a draw wouldn't hurt either)

13/4 Bromley V Solihull (Again, it's Bromley we'd want to root for as they're too far ahead to catch. A draw would be helpful to us too though)

16/4 Chesterfield V Gateshead (Chesterfield seem determined to end their season with a whimper but they could help us out by taking all three points against Gateshead. Failing that, at least a draw, eigh, Spireites?)

The Government's just published the Football Governance Bill, which will bring in a new independent regulator and affect National League clubs if it becomes law. The two main points are that the regulator will be able to step in to settle the funding dispute between the Premier League, EFL and National League - and clubs from Step 1 (National League) upwards will need to be licensed and stick to licensing conditions:

Quote
For the first time, clubs from the National League (Step One in the football pyramid) all the way to the Premier League will be licensed to compete in men’s elite football competitions in England. The proposed licensing regime will be proportionate to any problems, size and circumstances and involve a system of provisional and full licences, to give clubs time to transition.

It follows a number of issues in recent years including financial mismanagement, breakaway plans for the European Super League, and changes to club names, badges and colours against the wishes of fans.

All clubs will be subject to new baseline requirements enshrined in legislation irrespective of licence status, such as protections against breakaway competitions and stadium relocations.

The provisional licence will require all clubs to meet some mandatory conditions as standard, including basic requirements on fan engagement, corporate governance and financial reporting.

The regulator will then apply additional bespoke licence conditions on clubs, as necessary, to ensure they meet the necessary standards for a full licence across three key areas: financial resources, non-financial resources (such as relevant systems, policies and personnel), and fan engagement.

Fan engagement is a central tenet of the Football Governance Bill and will ensure fans are put back at the heart of the game. As part of the licence, clubs will be required to consult their fans on key off-field decisions, such as club heritage and the club’s strategic direction.

Altrincham FC First Team / Disquiet on the Bromley forum
« on: February 05, 2024, 11:10:35 AM »
It's not exactly 'Woodman out' but with their winless 2024 continuing, there's quite a bit of grumbling going on on the Bromley forum. I thought this post illustrated just how different the atmosphere is down there compared to the buzz at the J Davidson.

Man management I would suggest is lacking.

I've sat in enough changing rooms (in three different countries) to know what makes a group tick.

There will be some that have grafted all season, just to see a new bunch rock up and take your shirt without having to earn it.

Winning sides need a bond, a bond that's forged on respect. I truly feel our changing room will suffer due to the far too many ins and outs. I make it about 36 players so far this season?

What's wrong with building a tight squad pre season of 20 odd solid fellas that can grow together and achieve?

All's not lost. Might seem like a over reaction to some but alarm bells are ringing in my ear oles.

After the big fanfare this week and us swinging our dicks and checkbook about it was just another textbook anti climax.

Footnote:

Kevin Philips was a credit to Pool today, smiled throughout and kept dignified in victory.

Our manager on the other hand let off numerous C Bombs to the fourth official, with his lapdogs looking on clueless.....

Altrincham FC First Team / Mick Carmody GOAT
« on: January 17, 2024, 10:22:28 AM »
So, I tinkered with the code on Premier Manager 2 to make 1993 Mick Carmody the world's greatest player. Now, after four games, Alty are top of the league, Carmo is the Conference's leading scorer - and he's just been picked for England. ;D

Altrincham FC First Team / Oldham fined

£5k fine for supporters on the pitch at Chesterfield in August. Was it literally just a few fans running on the pitch or was there more to it?

Altrincham FC First Team / Worrying stadium news for Gateshead
« on: November 21, 2023, 04:21:43 PM »
Worrying news from local reporter, Daniel Holland...

Gateshead International Stadium could be taken over by a private operator, amid major cost-cutting measures that have already resulted in two leisure centres being shut down.
Civic centre bosses have agreed to include the famous venue, which has hosted international athletics events and pop concerts, in a tendering process to find an outside contractor who will run Gateshead Council’s remaining sports centres and swimming pools.
The local authority has been trying to slash the amount of money it spends on leisure services, as it faces up to a predicted £50m budget shortfall over the next five years, and controversially closed down Gateshead Leisure Centre and Birtley Swimming Centre this summer.
It has been the plan to procure an external operator for the borough’s remaining leisure sites in Blaydon, Heworth, and Dunston to further reduce the financial burden.
But the council’s Labour cabinet agreed on Tuesday morning to add the stadium to that offer as well, in hope of making a deal “more attractive to the market”.
The stadium had been excluded from the review that ultimately led to the two centre closures as it was viewed as a unique site – with its history of staging major events and the fact that it is home to the likes of Gateshead FC and Gateshead Harriers, as well as Gateshead College’s sports students.
But the council has warned that the venue is in need of £4m of repairs over the next decade and, with operating costs added to that, will cost the council at least £11m to keep open in that time.
A report to the cabinet added that there is “no current funding source that the council may access to meet this potential liability” and that the authority “would experience financial difficulties in retaining any offer” at the stadium.
Councillors were told on Tuesday morning that commercially confidential talks are continuing with Gateshead College about the future of the stadium and that a further exercise to assess market demand to take on the running of the stadium is also being carried out.
The cabinet agreed to include Gateshead Stadium in the procurement process to find a new leisure operator – however it will be kept as a separate lot to the other three leisure centres, meaning the council will not be obliged to award a contract that covers all four sites.
The results of an online survey the council conducted about the leisure centre’s future showed that 70% of 391 respondents disagreed with a proposal to “repurpose” it “so that its primary use is for the purposes of education and sport”.
The stadium was described by clubs who use it as a “valued regional venue” and a “unique asset in the region”.
When the leisure centre closure proposals were first unveiled last year, the GMB Union called for the stadium to be thrown into the mix for closure and described it as a “white elephant” that was “draining essential resources from other services in the community”.

Altrincham FC First Team / Dior on Radio Manchester
« on: October 12, 2023, 07:02:33 PM »
Worth a listen back to Dior Angus and Club Director, Sam Mackenzie, on Radio Manchester tonight, just after 6pm

Key takeaways...
  • Dior Angus supports Coventry and bakes a mean lemon drizzle
  • Sam says we can all enjoy a pint of Donkey's Breath on Saturday and describes Moss Lane as a "wonderful old lady" ;D

All in all we sounded every inch a club with its head screwed on and heading in the right direction.

« on: February 17, 2023, 09:36:54 PM »
York site says they'll be on sale from Thursday at 10am for Alty fans (although our website says Wednesday). Oddly it's a discounted game (£10 a ticket) and they aren't opening the West or North stands  :o

Are they thinking it's going to be a struggle to fill the ground? 🧐

All getting a bit ugly at Southend. Out of the Trophy, players not paid, owner Ron Martin arguing with fans online  :-\ (EDIT: possibly not - as Hashtag points out, it looks like a parody account. At least I hope it is 🫣)
