Altrincham FC First Team / Steve Finney - RIP
« on: February 05, 2022, 12:15:34 PM »
I have seen the sad news that former player Steve Finney has died, aged just 48.

He joined  us, initially on loan, from Chester City, in December 2000 and was a pretty regular goalscorer for the remainder of that season. He briefly returned, later in 2001 when he scored 2 goals in an 8-1 Cheshire Senior Cup win at Woodley Sports. RIP.

Altrincham FC First Team / Player called Street in 1968
« on: November 07, 2021, 10:36:14 PM »
A strange request, but somebody I know who supports Crewe Alexandra and tries to get complete details of lineups has asked if I know the first name of this player who played in our defeat to  Crewe in 1968.

I wasn't there (my excuse being that I was three years old), John Liaidlar's list of players from that season only has him by surname, while the Cult's piece about the later match in 1979  in "When we were kings" does refer to the earlier game in some detail, but doesn't mention Mr Street. If the Cult or one of our older supporters knows the player's first name, my friend would be very grateful, I am sure.

Altrincham FC First Team / Youth team in cup final today
« on: May 30, 2021, 09:58:19 AM »
Good luck to the U18s who are playing AFC Fylde in the final of the George Heslop and Neil Thomason Memorial Cup.

It's at 2.30 at Burscough's new ground, which is just at the rear of their old ground.

Altrincham FC First Team / Macclesfield next season
« on: May 18, 2021, 07:39:45 PM »
The FA announced details today of the reorganisation of non-League football steps 4 to 6 for next season.

The new Macclesfield club are starting a division higher than I had expected in the North West Counties Premier, where, among others, they will take on Northwich Victoria, and have a trip down Altrincham Road to visit Wythenshawe Town, who got promoted, as did  our relatively recent opponents Vaixhall Motors. They will all be a division below fans' club 1874 Northwich who got promoted out of this league.

Older fans might be interested to see the name of South Liverpool who have been promoted to North West Counties Division 1 North.

...but you can't take Macc out of the goalie.

You might remember Sam Ramsbottom who played against us in a friendly for Macclesfield  Town in 2018-19, when he didn't impress, and then signed for Alfreton Town for the season, when he was in goal for our 7-0 victory at the Town Ground.
Well, after a spell in the SPFL Championship with Greenock Morton ,he has just joined Dumbarton and made his debut on Saturday, and shown he has lost none of his abilities.

Altrincham FC First Team / Kevin Charlton (Telford United)
« on: November 21, 2020, 05:58:53 PM »
Those of us of a certain age will remember Kevin Charlton who played against us many times in goal for Telford United, and also, I think, Bangor City. Sadly, he has died.

Altrincham FC First Team / Stan Allan RIP
« on: November 25, 2019, 10:52:30 PM »
Skelmersdale United have announced the sad news of the death of Stan Allan. He won the FA Amateur Cup with them before moving to Moss Lane where he became the first player to win the Trophy as well as the Amateur Cup.
He played in the first game I ever saw, which will hardly be unusual as he played for us for years, and was our record appearance holder at the time. I remember him as a very dependable right back, who later returned as manager for the difficult 1991-92 season after a successful spell managing Witton Albion.
RIP Stan and thoughts with his family and friends.

Altrincham FC First Team / FC Isle of Man
« on: August 14, 2019, 11:08:16 PM »
Anybody who went to our friendly on the island last year might be interested to see there are plans for a new club to be formed to compete on the mainland, presumably joining the North West Counties League Division One North, in the same way that Guernsey and Jersey Bulls also compete on the mainland.

Guernsey seem to have got stuck at Step 4, so I can't really see FC Isle of Man getting above the lower division in the Northern Premier League, but there is a chance we could possibly return for a competitive game.

Altrincham FC First Team / Gerry Casey RIP
« on: June 27, 2019, 01:44:18 PM »
I have just seen the sad news that our former player Gerry Casey has died at the age of 77.
Others will remember him better than me, but he was a tough tackling defensive midfielder when I was first watching in the seventies. RIP.

Altrincham FC First Team / George Yardley
« on: November 20, 2018, 08:27:36 PM »
George Yardley has sadly died at the age of 76. He played for us, just before my time, in 1973-74, after signing from the Australian club St George Budapest, but his best spell was probably a few years earlier at Tranmere Rovers where he remains very highly regarded. Curiously, he began as a goalkeeper in his native Scotland for East Fife before being converted to a striker. RIP.

Altrincham FC First Team / FA Youth Cup 1st Round draw
« on: October 12, 2018, 06:00:46 PM »
Drawn before the final qualifying round has been played, but it's quite an attractive one as the winners of Monday's game at Tadcaster are at home to Oldham Athletic.

Altrincham FC First Team / Shaw Lane close diwn
« on: June 08, 2018, 04:09:32 PM »
We had speculated about this happening on another thread, but it has now been confirmed. Shaw Lane withdraw from adult football next season. So much for a hobby club...

Altrincham FC First Team / Tom Peers in the USA (temporarily)
« on: May 10, 2018, 12:45:08 PM »
People on twitter may have seen that Tom Peers is playing for New Orleans Jesters this summer, before returning for pre-season. Mason Walsh is also in the squad there, and this is the club Jordan Hulme has played for in the past. They play in the National Professional Soccer League (South East Conference) which is the fourth tier, although the second level North American Soccer League only seems to have four clubs.

Their first match was yesterday, at home to Mississippi Brilla in the US Open Cup (FA Cup equivalent) and Tom scored on his debut. Unfortunately, however, the Jesters went out after extra time (1-1) and penalties.

Altrincham FC First Team / Train strike on Shaw Lane away match day
« on: February 15, 2018, 10:17:11 PM »
Anyone going to this match should be aware that the RMT have announced another strike which will affect Northern Rail services.
You can get to Sheffield or Huddersfield without a problem, as they are run by other companies, but this could affect services on to Barnsley. Northern say they will run as many services as possible, but it's unclear what this will mean nor how many managers will be prepared to work on a Saturday (if they have a choice!). There is also a bus route from Sheffield to Barnsley.

Altrincham FC First Team / Non-League away supporters banned
« on: December 05, 2017, 09:53:55 AM »
No direct connection to Altrincham, but Clapton, whose supporters were banned from an Essex Senior League match a couple of weeks ago, have now been banned from a London Senior Cup match at Metropolitan Police tomorrow.
Some of the background, and our London correspondents may know more, is that Clapton, in a league where 100 is a good crowd, have attracted a lot of younger ultras who are noisy and use, or, they say, used to use flares, as well as being quite political. They also seem to be in constant dispute with the club ownership and are boycotting home games, hence other clubs check with Clapton who agree they should be banned.
This could be the thin end of the wedge.
