Altrincham FC First Team / Replacement Goalkeeper
« on: February 10, 2025, 10:36:50 AM »
I guess we have to talk about it, as it's clear Ethan will be out - the big question is simply for how long.

On one of the threads I suggested Elliot Justham given that he's left Dagenham - but it might be logistically difficult to get him up here, even on a short term deal.

The other big shout I'd make isn't Dermot Mee (as another suggested) - it's another one of United's goalkeepers, Elyh Harrison.

Harrison was apparently exceptional on loan for Chester - much like Harry Tyrer had been for them previously, who Everton now have out in League One with Blackpool (having won this league with Chesterfield).

A lot depends on whether United have bigger plans for him, but there can't be too many other EFL clubs in for goalkeeper right now.

Conditions for the remainder of the week and matchday look promising in terms of the surface - given the run of games we have coming up, it's pretty crucial we can bag the three points that will hopefully help to keep us in contention.

A few question marks over team selection when it comes to the front line:

- do we persist with Justin Amaluzor as he builds himself back up to sharpness?
- do we persist with Joe Nuttall up front and Regan Linney on the left?
- do we put Regan Linney up front and bring in another wing option such as Kosylo or Weaver (or both, whilst dropping Justin back to the bench)?

At least the back seven is looking pretty stable, and I don't expect that to change.

Altrincham FC First Team / Three Up Three Down

Looks like this is gaining traction:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c627ldxkdlgo

How do people feel about it?

I do feel that the last few seasons of overachievement from promoted sides has coincided with the National League's bigger clubs getting it together at a similar time to each other - Stockport, Wrexham, Notts County, Cheaterfield. I don't think that would happen year on uear - and, if anything, we're seeing a bit of a rebalancing with Sutton and Forest Green returning to Non-League last season - and the likes of Accrington and Morecambe looking well placed to join them.

It would, of course, also mean it's easier to go back down again. Plus would it cheapen the achievement of going up, knowing we'd done it once this system had been installed?

Could we potentially be seeing the creation of a fifth (professional) division in the football league? It could mean that NLN/NLS clubs are kept down for being P/T, but there seemed to be a lot of that (albeit relating to ground gradings mainly) that happened when automatic promotion / relegation was first installed.

Or could this go nowhere?

Interesting times...

Altrincham FC First Team / FA Trophy Quarter Final Draw - Rochdale (A)
« on: February 03, 2025, 03:34:36 PM »
Just pulling this one out of the Eastleigh thread.

Tough draw, but infinitely better than heading down south I guess.

Hopefully they'll be up against it with fixtures already by then.

Bring it on...

Altrincham FC First Team / Bedford (Club Merger)
« on: January 29, 2025, 01:45:18 PM »
This one had passed me by, but interesting all the same: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20pp850zeqo

Bedford Town are top of their league in Step 3, whereas Real Bedford are top of their league in Step 4.

Real Bedford in particular have huge backing (via Bitcoin) - and the Winklevoss twins are said to be investors.

With quite a big catchment area around the club(s), I can see them progressing to the National league at the very least in the near future.

Or will it all end in tears?

Absolute farce up there at the moment.

Having reassured fans the BBC's reporting of a postponement was inaccurate... they went and called it off 90 minutes before kick-off.

This is having re-laid the pitch recently at some cost.

Can see them and Halifax having to really stretch themselves to stand any chances of the playoffs.

Altrincham FC First Team / Squad Update
« on: January 06, 2025, 01:09:55 PM »
Charlie Olson extended to the end of the season - that's excellent news, hopefully we'll have one or two contract extension announcements soon.

Sadly no real surprise in hearing that Max Haygarth is to be released - good luck to him.

Not the worst effort in terms of predicting yesterday's XI, with the exception being both centre backs! - assuming Baines was a tactical rotation/rest maybe he'll be the one to come back in, with Jake Cooper retaining his spot.

I suspect we might see Tom Crawford come in at 10 and Alex Newby go back out to the left:

                      Ross

Banks  Cooper  Baines  Golden

           Wilson    Osborne

     Kosylo   Crawford   Newby

                    Linney

First southern away day of the season for me, looking forward to it.

I've been fairly uncertain in recent weeks with selection, but with a couple of enforced absences I'm fairly confident I might get all eleven here:

                      Ross

Banks  J.Jones  Baines  Golden

           Wilson    Osborne

     Kosylo   Newby   Reddin

                    Linney

Parky loves an element of surprise though, so let's see...

Not sure whether to gauge this as a 'more of the same' after the Southend game, or a 'big reaction needed' after the United U21 game - maybe a bit of both.

The management obviously like what they're seeing in what Joe Nuttall brings at the moment, so I wouldn't be surprised if we go something like this:

         Ross (fingers crossed)

Banks  J.Jones  Baines  E.Jones  *or Golden

             Wilson    Osborne

     Newby    Crawford    Linney

                       Nuttall

Hopefully plenty more minutes for Isaac Marriott.

The weather looks set to be absolutely shocking across the country, so thankfully it's not our pitch that will be taking the battering - and hopefully we won't get a call off, it's set to dip towards freezing...

In terms of our participation in this competition, let's get behind the team and make it work for us, rather than worrying about what the Prem teams get out of it.

On that note, given the squad options we have available to us I suspect we'll go quite strong:

                          Randle

Golden  Bailey/Teale  Cooper  E.Jones

                  Wilson  Humbles

  Haygarth        Kosylo (c)         Reddin

                        Bickerstaff

Obviously it would be great for Isaac Marriott and Justin Donawa in particular to get half an hour each, plus we have the loanees Bailey, German and Weaver who could play a part if we need them to.

Hopefully a surprise reappearance from Justin Amaluzor and/or Ollie Crankshaw too.

The players I wouldn't expect to play any part are Ross, maybe Banks, Baines, J.Jones, Osborne, Crawford, Newby and Linney (although he could be suspended anyway). I'm sure he might throw one of Osborne/Crawford in there for some extra experience, but I doubt we actually need it.

For those interested in who will be lining up against us, I notice Tyrell Malacia got a run out in the EFL Trophy last week so he might be the 'big name' to be involved.

Altrincham FC First Team / Worthing FC
« on: November 05, 2024, 09:27:06 AM »
Anyone watched the Worthing FC documentary, 'The Club That George Built'?

I see they've just opened an 1,800 capacity stand that shows us what could be done with the Popular Side in a very tight space (theirs backs directly on to houses).

The photo of it looking full over the weekend looks really decent - good incline etc - I suppose it just depends on whether we'd plan to add any more seats.

Altrincham FC First Team / FA Youth Cup
« on: October 31, 2024, 02:36:44 PM »
A huge message of good luck to our young lads tonight as they take on Carlisle United.

I can't be there personally but it's a reasonably mild evening (albeit with a bit of drizzle), hopefully with the pricing we'll see a decent gate.

Altrincham FC First Team / Free Weekend (Sat 2nd Nov)
« on: October 20, 2024, 10:33:24 AM »
I know we raised this one last year and the club opted to take the week's break instead of rearranging a game... or perhaps no other club wanted to agree to it either... but I always think we should try to get these games played rather than risk congestion like Halifax / Gateshead found.

Out of the Tuesday evening games we have scheduled, only Hartlepool have exited the Cup like us - they were also an option last year - and we ended up going up there on the originally scheduled Tuesday evening and getting beaten anyway.

Not that I have the data to back this up, but I'd rather the club went up there on a Saturday afternoon than a Tuesday evening.

Do we think the club might look at it?

Congratulations to Maxi on making his senior Poland debut yesterday, lining up alongside Robert Lewandowski and against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes - what a moment for him!
