Altrincham FC First Team / Leaders
« on: March 02, 2024, 06:22:33 PM »
Time for a few to step up and show their mettle in the next three games. When the tide is with us we play some terrific stuff but what has worried me in the last few games has been the lack of leadership on the pitch. Ethan Ross is such a massive loss , not only for his goalkeeping but for his leadership qualities. Haven’t seen one bollocking on the pitch since his spell out of the team.

Think we can safely say that the squad rotation over the last three games has been a resounding failure.

Three individual errors - three goals. Matt Gould looks tiny in the goals, we need Ethan back sharpish.

Far too defensive throughout the game. We were lucky to be 2 up at half time, but at that point we should have been able to see it out against a poor Fylde side. Just very strange that we seemed so happy to sit deep from the first minute and let them dominate possession, that was very much a case of 2 points dropped.

I’m happy with the list. Goodson looked so lightweight up front at Aldershot, and whilst I believe he is a quality finisher I think other aspects of his game were well short of National League standard. Perritt was underwhelming and whether it was his decision or ours that he is gone, I’m not worried about losing him. I can only assume that Osbourne and Brockbank are still under contract.

Ive been underwhelmed with Kyle Ferguson. He adds strength and height which in a lot of games is great, but his distribution is poor and that in a Parky team is a problem. I think we look best with a James Jones / Lewis Baines partnership.

As disappointing as last night was, we need to be realistic here about what we are up against. Totally agree that we have had too many loans throughout the season, but as said earlier, without them we would have been relegated. The goalkeeping situation is tricky. Byrne will hopefully improve those aspects of his game that are currently a weakness and develop but an experienced polished keeper at this level would probably cost three times what we are paying Ollie. Gould is absolutely not good enough to be relied upon as a backup keeper at this level though. A younger keeper on loan a few levels below unless we need him would be a better option i think.

We’re so low on belief and confidence. Beaten by a better side, but we didn’t even look like scoring. These next two games are make or break.

Id agree with this. There was a moment in the second half when Jordan got the better of one of the two centre backs he was battling with and there was absolutely nobody close to him to pass to. I think the players seem hesitant and lacking the confidence to commit themselves forward in case they are picked off on the counter. We won’t get anything in this league by being hesitant though, we need to have a real go at Torquay next week – fortune favours the brave.
The passing was awful yesterday too, we just couldn’t string together more than 3 passes and too many balls went long from back to front – again a confidence issue. Pringle has to start, comfortable on the ball and has the confidence to keep playing in a team that is clearly lacking it.

9 minutes I won't get back. Not even a hint of an apology.

Bore off Parkinson talking about resources. You were fine last season against Stockport. We should have drawn with Grimsby.

This is harsh. Whilst I agree that it isn’t a great idea for Parky to use the full time part time excuse too much as it can become an ingrained defeatist approach, we have to be realistic and realise that some of the teams we are up against wouldn’t look out of place in League 1. There are some powerhouse teams in this league and overall Parky has done a fantastic job. Do you think there is a manager out there that with the resources we have that could do a better job?
I personally wouldn’t have selected the same team against Stockport but I also don't feel as if he should be apologising in any way for his team selection or losing a couple of games of football against Stockport.

Very strange team selection tonight from Parky. Disrupting the Mullarkey / Hannigan partnership to bring in Digie, putting Mullarkey in centre midfield, then to round things off dropping Jordan and not playing a recognised striker.
The Pringle situation is baffling. One of the most gifted players we’ve had in years at Alty yet can’t get a start. Like mentioned above, I’d play him in the No.10 behind Jordan.
Stockport blitzed us at Edgeley, but tonight we surrendered before a ball was kicked. Think the wounds from Boxing Day hadn’t healed for Parky and it showed in the approach tonight.

Best striker we've had at Alty since Colin Little, bringing him back is an absolute no-brainer for me. He left to take up an excellent deal and who can blame him. The fact that weve spent 18 months trying to find a replacement and not even come close says how good he was for us. A forward line of Colclough, Mooney, Hancock, Kosylo and Hulme will be a great watch.

An improvement on the previous game for sure, even though Wrexham weren’t a patch on Stockport. Thought we understandably started tentatively and there were too many long balls played but by the second half we looked more and more like a Phil Parkinson team there were some encouraging moments. Mooney gives us that direct attacking threat that we have been missing and hopefully he stays fit now for an extended period. We still desperately need a striker

That’s the first time under Parky in the National League where I’ve felt we’ve been totally outclassed and not close to the standard. Today was poor no doubt about it, and playing 5 at the back didn’t work but we won’t play against sides of that quality every week. As mentioned in previous posts Fitzpatrick was dire (though in fairness he isn’t a wingback) and Porter even worse. I have no idea how Porter gets a game ahead of our other midfield options on the bench.
Andrew Flynn mentioned a week or so ago about why it is we have players (today Hampson and Pringle) that go from the starting 11 to not even featuring on the bench ? Unless they are injured or covid related absentees than I find their omission from the squad today puzzling.
