I might take some criticism for this but if its the pitch then i find it quite dissapointing as ive been two sunday league pitches yesterday and and earlier and they both looked as though they would be playable

The topography of the stadium makes thawing times longer. Shadows, wind etc.

Was anything actually done to try to get the game on? Move the ice to give it chance to thaw, clear the stands of ice, etc.

I saw nothing on the forum for volunteers to come to the ground.

Dissapointed I needed to see football today.

There's still solid ice on the side roads around the ground so no amount of moving anything around was going to make the pitch thaw out overnight.

stockport-leeds goes ahead on  their very  dodgy pitch

Maybe we should play it there then. "My mate's was walking his dog on a sunday league pitch and he texted me to tell me that it looked ok" type comments don't really help if it's Altrincham's pitch that's frozen solid.

There were the best part of 100 people at York from 8.00am on Boxing Day clearing the pitch, they'd used the snow as a cover to keep the frost off. It seems slightly strange that there's a kind of half arsed message at 9.30 from Alty, "Pitch looks a bit frozen so we're not bothering". Given that there'll likely be only half as many fans at the midweek game you've got to wonder if Alty didn't actually want to play today.

I'm sure Alty want to play, although I must thank the club for the early decision it enables the away fans and us exiles to avoid a fruitless and possibly dangerous journey, summer footy enyone ? Alty 100%

Thanks, next time the pitch is flooded and a load of us spend the morning clearing water off the pitch so you can have a day out i'll remember that.

Yes, so Alty who have not played a game now since December 15th I'm sure we were just itching to get our 3rd league game in the last 10 days postponed so we can have a nice Tuesday night pile up in the new year whilst simultaeneously halving the gate receipts when we do play York on a Tuesday now. Have you ever played football on an icy pitch? just becasue the snow has melted doesn't mean the pitch is safe to play on.

No surprise it's off to be honest.

If, like me, you just want to get out of the house for a beer or two and watch some football as an excuse to go somewhere, a couple of us are going to Stalybridge v Southport (which I think is 7th v 1st in Conf North) so you are welcome to come along.

We will be in the pub near the ground from about 2pm.

At the end of the day the ref called it off not Alty. Currently -2 here and visibility only 50m in freezing fog. It was the rain that cleared most of the snow away yesterday and left about 10% behind. Pitch is frozen in other areas. If the snow had remained perhaps it could have been cleared and the pitch would have been playable. By the way I have never seen such icy conditions as we have had in this area in memory, but if you drive a few miles away the conditions are not as bad!

Had you had a competent ground staff, a useful number of fans to throw a cover over the frozen area and take it off in the morning and somebody at the club who was able to watch, and understand a weather forecast, perhaps there wouldn't have been a problem.

Down the road Stockport's games goes ahead but they had an appeal for fans to help clear the pitch, as did we. I'm sure some of you understand our disappointment, how did we and Stockport realise it would be a problem before pitch inspection time and the Alty staff didn't? More disappointing is the fact that it's only a couple of small areas of the pitch not that the whole playing area was all under 6 feet of snow. We had the same thing at Grays before Xmas, at the time of the pitch inspection 1.15, only the goal areas had been cleared.

I've enjoyed our time in the conference, we've been to new places and met new people and I generally haven't subscribed to the football snobbery of some, but it's not rocket science is it? Throw a blanket over it and brush the snow off FFS!

Do you think its been postponed because no-one had a brush and thought of brushing the snow off?

I love how some people have suddenly gained diplomas in weather overnight, sometimes it isnt as simple as 'brushing a bit of snow' off the pitch, the frost can be several inches thick. Why not ring the club direct and tell Heatchcote your thoughts instead of spouting off on here, we're all disappointed ffs !

Did you not see the huge heaters and tents that Stockport had covering and heating the pitch at Edgeley park (which belonged to Sale Sharks incidentally) for 3 days? If it hadn't been for them that game would've been off, nothing to do with volunteers. If I find a spare £20,000 down the back of the settee we'll get some of those eh?

I won't bore you with the amount of times I've been part of a volunteer force clearing snow/forking the ptich on the morning of a game over the years (and a lot of other people have done it a lot more) but do you really think  it's never been thought of? FFS!

Picture taken today at 10.30 an hour after it was called off. If you look carefully you can see the groundmans fork who spent most of yesterday trying to prepare the pitch for todays game.
Note you cannot even see golf road.

I really do think that the club did everything in its power to get the game on folks... It serves no one any good to have games called off.

All the talk of covers, heaters, and the like are all well and good but they do have to be paid for..

Its winter, It gets fkn cold and the ground freezes, thats what happens....

It is frustrating when games are called off but lets have a reality check...

Climate change?  "My Arse"
 ;)

I think that most of the negative comments today are borne of frustration that the game wasn't on.
I feel absolutely gutted that these last two games have been off and I am sure so are many other people. We just need to see Alty playing football again, then we can go back to how this forum should be.

We are still leagues above certain other fans forums though!!

Also bear in mind that even if the pitch was playable it may well have still been called off if the roads around the ground were icy as public safety could have been compromised. All very frustrating but it is winter after all. Here's to a footie fest in the New Year.

it was below zero about an hour after the game so people leaving the bar in a giddy state might have slipped. these things have to be taken into consideration.

Surely we should have done something to stop the pitch freezing? why was there not an appeal for us all to park our cars on the pitch for example? did we even try buying 10000 cans of antifreeze from halfords?....A DISGRACE!
