Title: Altrincham Town Centre
Post by: fuertes on October 13, 2009, 05:26:13 PM
I haven't lived in Altrincham for about five years. I come back reasonably often to watch Alty, to visit my folks etc, and will occasionally head towards the town to meet up with someone for a pint at Wetherspoons, go for a meal, whatever.

However, today was the first time I have walked around Altrincham Town Centre for about 18 months. I don't know whether it's due to this redevelopment being in progress, the recession or what, but I was struck by the number of boarded up shops and to be frank, much as it pains me to say it, the general crappy look of the town.

Is parking still ridiculously expensive, thereby driving shoppers away and into the arms of the Trafford Centre/Arndale Centre? Is there just no money about? It was absolutely horrible to look round the place.

The only thing that cheered me up was a couple of brilliant pan-pipers  :)

Alty town centre was on R5Live the other night when they had a phone in about clampers and rediculous parking fines. A chap had left his car in a car park that closed for the evening. The signs to say when the car park closes and the amount to pay to free your car were well hidden.

It is a shame for such a historic town centre, expecially if it wants to compete with the Trafford Centre etc.

PS Don't be Frank - that means you will only turn up to ML when the TV cameras are there!

I heard the rents being charged for shops are way too high. Alty is the only place i have ever seen a McDonald's close down. Even Pizza Hut has moved. Something is seriously wrong.

In a nutshell, Yip!

You can't park anywhere near Alty TC  now, barely any of the surrounding roads. It's actually bloody easier to get to  Trafford Centre etc.

If the council cared they'd sort it but they won't.

But why don't they care? Isn't Trafford under Tory control? I'd have thought Altrincham is their 'heartland', why are they seemingly killing the town? It's all the more stupid since they seem to be making some effort to redevelop the precinct, but in conjunction with that policy they're not letting anyone park nearby  ???

Aren't they increasing the size of the multi storey?

Makes you wonder if they don't want to upset Tesco or the owners of the Trafford Centre

I have just got back to devon from visit to my father and i walked around Alty with my wife Monday and we wondered the same.Alty looks like a bit of a one horse town and the horse left sunday. It did look worse before they redeveloped the bottom end of george street.Parking cost us £2.00 in the high rise carpark at the back of george street.

Ditto everything that has been said. I left Alty in 94 and am amazed how poor the town center is now. I took my wife to shoe her my hometown and she asked if Tumbleweed was council sponsored.

I work for Iceland and one of my mates is a store manager. He has moved to Stretford as the woman manageress there is going to be taking over an Iceland in Altrincham.

Must be some sort of plans in the pipeline as our MD only spends money flying the managers to Florida for a convention  :)

... next up will be bargain buys, primark, new look etc

It really has changed form when I was a lad, I remember C&A and that good old record shop called 4play (oo err missus)

I remember the days of Swales record shop, Monkey Tree and that shop near Grafton Mall that sold all sorts of tat and gifty things and I remember The Red Balloon. I remember Ben's 50p store next to the post office - and I remember the post office. Even Walton's model shop appears to have shrunk!

Do you remember that shop next to White & Swales record shop that sold only aprons?  I could never work out how that shop stayed open.  Then there was Hawkers, Fryers Wools, Animal Magic, Axe and Cleaver pub and my mum used to buy my clothes from the Ladybird shop near the bus station.  We did our shoppng in the Maypole next to the Brickies.....

Showing your age there: I remember all but Hawkers. I can remember when the library was near the Old Market Place and I remembe Timothy Whites and I remember WH Smiths being on Stamford New Road. There used to be an excellent tobaconist there too that sold Lindt chocolate before it was widely available.

Altrincham £2.00 Car Park
Trafford Centre Free

As for doing up the precinct that is a good point, who is go "up altrincham" on a saturday shopping when you cant park.

Alty has also been killed due to the Pubs and Bars getting riff raff in. This certainly killed it for a night out. I would not dream of going to alty for night out now.

Remember all those shops mentioned above, Taylor and Cross, Shearings, and whatever happened to woolworths lol

Has Taylor & Cross gone?

And what was that Pharmacy on Stamford New Road?

Does anyone remember the old bus station, one of those good old fashioned ones where the buses run over pedestrians when reversing! I don't remember the old bus station smelling of pish (as we call it up here). Although I believe it was the first in the country, the bus rail interchange is a smelly mess that destroyed the frontage of the railway station.

I have old photos of Alty in the downstairs bog (J's mum wouldn't allow them anywhere else!) from the early 20th century which shows so many of the old buildings and George Heslop!

Indeed I do remember it  JD.  there was a Cafe on the corner called the Acropolis if I am not mistaken where spotty oiks like myself used to hang around. The swimming baths a bit further up next to the Stamford Hall.  The axe and cleaver pub was one of the better pubs in town. There was a boutique called Adam west's who sold modern clothes such as Bell bottom trousers ::) ... You could buy a bespoke suit from Hepworths and get your cooked meats from Vincents near the Downs.

I also moved from Alty back in 69 when I joined up but got back as often as possible to watch Alty (and see the folks)...

Sadly Alty has changed totally since those days of Stanleys Market and loads of good shops such as Ray Browns electrical shop, Whites & Swales, Woolies and the Co-op .. The offices of the Guardian newspaper in George Street. and the old electric trains taking you to Oxford Rd.

Market Dave singing and dancing in the market.

I now live in Shrewsbury, but my memories of Alty are still vivid.

If I am not mistaken I went to Bradbury Sec Modern with one Harold Smith !! :D

All that and seeing Jackie Swindells do his stuff on a Saturday.

Happy days and memories of bygone years..

Cmon Alty

I'm seriously going to write to Brady about it. Apart from anything else, I want to know why it has been allowed to get so sh*t. It's not like there's a lack of cash in the area or an unskilled local population.

I've always been proud to tell people where I'm from, but if I'd grown up with the town looking like that my whole life I would have been much less positive about the place.

If Im not mistaken Alty and Trafford Centre come under Trafford council.

Fixing up alty and other satellite towns in trafford would effectively harm the trafford centre and start a domino effect that could see the place be shown up for the white elephant that it is.

Its all speculation but at the end of the day there isnt enough money to go around the shops in alty and the trafford centre as well. The trafford centre used to get loads of shoppers from Liverpool but they dont need to come any more, if they lose the good people of alty etc too some of those big shops will be on their way and its curtains.

I cant imagine things getting too much better for alty any time soon.

Aaaah The Red Balloon, if i'm not mistaken that was the toy shop, I remember my mum and dad taking me in there when i was about 5, they used to have a train that went round on a track you could go on and a model railway round the skirting thingy mabob just below the ceiling.

One of the problems is the independent shop cannot compete with the chains and the chains will go to where the customers are i.e. Trafford Centre

Jennifer's Dad - the pharmacy was Copeland's.

As an old fart who came to Timperley in 1949, there's loads of happy memories that have long gone. The Stamford Hall (saw the Rolling Stones there very early on, and actually once played a gig there !), the old Baths, the old Bus Station where we used to meet girls on the way home from school.

I was shocked to discover last week that I am the last working cab driver in the Borough to have plied for hire from under the old Station canopy before they built the Interchange !

Thank you - I noticed it had gone when I drove past the other week.

I noticed in Timperley that Percy Rooks is still open - a mate of mine once drove from Crewe to Timperley just because he had seen Rooks in Frank Sidebotom's Fantastic Shed Show -  and Luxistore. And there used to be (both in Timperley and Altrincham) a deli called David Vincent's - I think he opened this after being in The Invaders (A Quinn Martin Production).

The old toy shop in Timperley, where they had a 10p bin - just enough pocket money for a cheap plastic toy), has long gone.

I suppose everyone just goes to Toys R Us now - very good in its way, but Timperley's toy shop & The Red Balloon had a great selection of Airfix stuff.

Remember Stamford Hall, my brother-in-law played there with a band called the Sidewalkers, supporting the Hollies very early in their career. Remember the listening booths in White and Swales. I remember almost drowning in the pool next door, I had only just learned to swim and dived in at the deep end in error. My feet did not touch the bottom as I was only 10 at the time, some other kid rescued me for which I am eternally grateful.

By the way, anybody tried buying a non-chart CD recently, or a CD single in Altrincham. The only shop I now like is the music shop Dawsons.

By the way, all school uniform shops are horrendously expensive, we are a captive audience, think Tesco should be allowed to sell school uniforms also, but then again schools would not get such a big kickback; its all about ripoff Britain. I say that as a patriotic fellow as well.

There was also a  mothercare at the acropolis cafe end of town, that sold some toys. there is at least one person who comes on here that was involved in the great subbuteo team robbery of 73 when an awful lot of dinky cars went missing as well. well if you will leave a gang of schoolboys on their own for 30 minutes.
My gran who lived off deansgate lane used to do her thursday big shop in broadheath, there was no need to go to the big town imagine that you would only beable to get a kebab or fishing tackle these days. Talking of fishing, Dixons on regent road now that was a shop. Stanley market ,Sowerbutts with that till, London Jim used to live in the record shop name escapes me or was that called the pop inn as well, opposite the the Park,Wards the green grocers. next door to Johnsons the green grocer, Croppers may have been a love connection for a board member there. Witherspoons will always be a light shop in my eyes.

ramble over someone just walked in and reminded me i am nearly 50 it all seems like yesterdqay

WIMPY - spent many an afternoon in there with my mum and dad. It was the place to go before McDonalds was even invented.

Remember him well - When we did a cross country run the route went past my front door and I use to hang back so I could nip in for a drink on the way round  ;)

Give him my regards

Yes, as you look at WH Smiths it was a few shops down to the left of it. It was great real food.

My memories are more of Sale where I grew up but I remember the old Alty bus station and recall the noise and business scared me as a kid. Also the railway crossing gates with the magnetic locks that activated when the train came, didn't the road go through once with an old proper level crossing with manual gates?

There was a shop at the bottom of School Rd in Sale opposite The Bulls Head that sold nothing but barbequed chickens.

Schools are not allowed to get kickbacks from uniform sellers, you're right they should be available at tesco etc, often schools get round this by allowing the badge to be bought and sewn onto plain jumpers etc.  Problem with that is that these kids are immediatly noticable.  Its a disgrace often used by some very middle class schools to discourage lesser earners to apply for places at their school.  Thing is whats wrong with 2nd hand? I wore my brothers blazer and he got it from my cousin. People are so hung up on having new.
In general the heart has gone out of alty but the football club was never really part of it.

Stockport road used to go through the crossing before they built the flyover. I remember that all bridges in Alty had a bend in them too!
