Title: Frickley Athletic
Post by: ChrisVessey CUFC on October 12, 2009, 05:09:05 PM
Should they dispose of Lincoln United tomorrow night, we'll have to travel there.

I remember an Alty fan telling me you've had some horrible trips there and their fans are a bit.... odd.

Anyone care to give me a heads up on what to expect? Will our 600+ fans be welcomed with open arms or will we be lynched by a load of weird urchins?

Even Margaret Thatcher would have pangs of conscience if she ever saw the state of Frickley.

I remember(in no particular order) a huge great slag heap, boarded up shops, drug addicts and back in 84 a hell of a lot of rioting.

I'd rather be going there than Mansfield though.

Enjoy!

The best way i can describe South Elmsall which is where Frickley are based is the film Billy Elliott. No ballet dancers but the area is very similar. Overturned cars, rows of houses boarded up with the odd one still being lived in etc.

Chris, you'll think that what people are saying is OTT but its really not.

You walk down streets and there is one house left and the rest are boarded up.  The window cleaner has an orbital sander..

Theres loads of cortina estates on bricks on driveways with mangy one eyed alsatians growling at you from the back seat. The pub next to the station, the gun, got burnt down just before our last visit

The Cortina's can only be found in the nicer areas.........they are usually Datsun Cherry's or Austin Allegro's.

I had the pleasure of working at nearby Askern Colliery and can tell you the town was ok (ish) before it's community was destroyed.
Suggest you go to a brass band concert instead, believe me Frickley Colliery Brass are rather good !

There may be a few idiots around for a big cup game, but the issues we had were related to the 1980's Coalminers' Strikes & are therefore unlikely to be repeated.

If the terraced houses are still there near the ground, then it is worth spending a few minutes to view one of the strangest & saddest sights in England......'Billy Elliott' meets 'Rita, Sue & Bob too".Ballers makes a very pertinent comment relating to Maggie Thatcher & I think if she was taken there & asked to reflect on the social  impact of her political actions of the late seventies & eighties she would probably say "Wibble!"

If you want to get a feel for the ground itself, then there are highlights of a couple of recent matches on the UniBond League website.

I seem to remember going into their bar at one match & there were no carpets on the floor.
We were told that a couple of their players had nicked them but honestly it's right at the top
of my list for being the worst place ever to watch a football match, especially on a cold dark
winters afternoon.

Not forgetting the slagheap next to the ground that depicts what life on earth may be like after a nuclear bomb.

The window cleaner has an orbital sander.....

classic stuff!

Yeah I think the area will still be an '80s recession throwback I don't think the town are that bothered about the football......most of them are probably in sink estates elsewhere or in new towns.

it's been a few years so they may have bulldozed the lot and put up a retail park with a pizza hut and cinema complex with a load of housing assoc new builds...

I bet that big f**k off slagheap is still there though!....I remember a few coals flying at us from that direction and an army of scum emerging over the top like red indians in a film

On the last visit to Frickley we visited what could loosely be described as a 'pub.' The reason for the incredibly long wait for the food that had been ordered suddenly became clear when the door to the bar burst open and the chef, clad in his whites and plainly bladdered to the skies, tottered in carrying two plates at a 45 degree angle with the gravy pouring over the sides like a brown Niagara. Happy days.

Don't look forward too optimistically.....they're only just above the relegation zone. Mind you, Shaw Lane are probably coming up, and it's close enough for a nostalgia trip.

Do you think we'll be able to compete with the likes of Shaw Lane or shall we set our expectations now?

On my one and only visit I stood in the 'refreshments' queue behind the legendary Tony Kelly.
He turned to me and gazing at the slag heap he said "sh*t hole isn't it"
Didn't stop Tony polishing off a couple of burgers though.

Nowadays it's difficult to imagine that Frickley Athletic were once a member of the Non League elite, notably under the management of the former Scarborough defender Sean Marshall.

They peaked in the 1985/86 Gola League season when they finished second in the league table behind Enfield (Alty were fourth).

Back in December 1983, Alty even swooped to sign Frickley's leading goalscorer Gary Hooley.

However, after just four appearances and one goal he swiftly headed back to South Elmsall.

He was subsequently imprisoned for burning down his wife's home and thereby qualifies for potential inclusion in the Alty Jailbirds XI:

First place I ever saw upturned pies with the peas poured in the bottom.

A bloke not letting me park outside his house because it was a bus stop. It hadn't been a bus stop for about ten years.

A pub where we asked if they did food was met with the reply, "you're not from round here are you love".

A strange place indeed.

Similar experience with Mike Atherton at Derby.

The alternative response to people who queried whether or not a pub did food, was to tell them, "Why don't you try the local chippy and see if they could do you dinner with 3 pints of mild"

Worked for 12 months nearby at Askern Colliery during the Miners Strike (we had NUM permission in case anyone gets the wrong idea)......we could be late every morning and then blame it on the van getting searched by the not-so-local police force

Was there not an incident during a match where the crowd witnessed a scab getting chased over the slag heap and battered?

Maybe there was artistic license in the story. It could have been the gazelle telling that one!

There were plenty of plod about who dished out beatings too, so though I vaguely recall some altercation on the brow of a slag heap who was and wasn't involved I have no idea.

Was there not a lot of Barnsley there at our cup win?

Police horses careering over the slag heap, police going into the home end and suddenly their helmets flying in the air (the standard issue ones I hasten to add), our coach was bricked and the driver headbutted...not the safest I've ever felt, but I doubt very much it's like that now.

If the slag heap had been in front of the snack bar it wouldn't have stopped Tony Kelly.

Weren't Frickley rather good on the basis that all the community/miners unions or something contributed to their running and weren't they one of our fellow 3rd round non league sides in 86? Got beat by Rotherham I think

Fair play to him, I remember him standing with us (quite balanced with a snack in each hand) and joining in with the singing and shouting at officials etc.  However, have I got it wrong that some Alty fans had a bit of a chant at him and he got a bit upset and walked off?  Maybe I dreamed that bit?

I think you may have got Tony Sullivan and Tony Kelly confused. I can remember Tony Sullivan, who was pretty large himself, although not in Tony Kelly's category, singing along in the last game of the season in April 2003.

Artistic licence !!!!!!

there was the guy in white pants chased up the slag heap by a band of keystone cops at the infamous cup game he avoided capture to huge cheers from thebaying mob . when we went to the league game some time after it was rumoured said white panted man was the the first miner to be killed in the strike and a minutes silence was held for him before kick off . a certain ex chairman of the supporters assoc nearly caused a riot when he exclaimed in a rather loud bitter fueled voice "i cant believe they are having a minutes silence for a football hooligan" not the time or place for such opinions . i have many embelleshed over the years stories to tell of trips to frickley but def not one of my favourite venues . do believe the pub in the town was called chequers a scary scary place . is it just me or did it rain every time we went there apart from the time it snowed (another story)

The standard is going to be utter toilet. From a day out on the smash perspective probably Stourbridge, Buxton and Marine (Liverpool first) will stand out. At least it'll only be a tenner in at most of these places. The sheer indignity.

Yes the three Costellos..........easy enough to do Lymm and Stockton Heath

Matlock Bath on the bank holiday, chips and beer in the gorge.

A few of us used to go there on a Friday night in the early 80s when we had motorbikes. Play Defender and Robotron (anyone?) in the arcades before chips and the pub. These were the days when having three and a half pints over a few hours was not perceived by us as a risk to our health and safety !! You would not even get me on a bike now
