frickley in the miners strike
I think we played them in the cup during the strike  and my dad used to tell the tale of an ambush from the locals against the police who were escorting the Rotherham fans (not  exactly pro police at the time either)

Chelsea.... All the pubs were shut. Every house and shop window was boarded up. The riot police almost outnumbered the crowd. The underground was closed. Fulham broadway was full of police dogs and horses. The programme sellers refused to go near the away end so nobody got a programme and we had to spend almost the entire game listening to those maggots singing that stupid song about mowing a meadow. The sooner they go bankrupt the better.

I doubt if most people could afford to take kids to Chelsea now.

that was a horrible night wasnt it. then there were a few at frickley. so bleak and you knew the police were of no use to you

the 1-1 at white hart lane. i think we naively thought that they would not be bothered with us as we were non league and resolutely 'normal' but when everyone around me was being attacked i soon forgot that. i went over hedges, round side street and all sorts tring to get to the station. still hate tottenham

york in the facup. the coldest anyone has been anywhere ever. if we hadnt been huddled together we would have died.

the worst places though are the new identikit stadiums which have no heart or soul

i watch west ham now and to be honest most of it is nicey nicey. millwall away isnt, there is deep seated hatred. then when you play big old clubs in the chamionship (hello wolves) they always think thay have a point to prove

easy frickley.

Something was always different when we went there. the ground got worse over the years, and that slag heap was just a mess. Still remember drinking in the social bit at half time (you had to go up the players tunnel to get there) and being forced to wait (quite pissed) next to the ref when alty came out for the 2nd half. Other than frickley, bamber bridge was rubbish, with their concrete fencing that was supposed to keep everyone off the pitch in our first promotion year. Yeah right that worked.

Bishop Auckland ...

can't see half the pitch due to poor floodlights, can only watch the game from 50% of the ground and its cold. Only 'just' a 3 sided ground !

There have been many over the years, Frickley, Tow Law the coldest, but nowadays it has to be Ebbsfleet/G&N, there is nothing about the ground or the place to recommend at all.

Any ground where drums out number fans.

I nominate Colne.....classic spend mega bucks on team nothing on the ground.

A strange shed type corridor behind both goals clearly knocked up with B&Q offcuts.

Ashington. We only played them there the once in the first year of the NPL, 1969-70 season.

After getting directions to it from one of the 'locals' the coach driver still drove past it thinking it was a scrapyard. The far end was the car park where speccies stayed in their vehicles to watch the game like a drive-in movie, the stand on the popular side had market stalls along the back which were used twice a week for the local market, and the main stand was a large hut with a verandah like an enlarged version of Jed Clampett's shack.
Portland Park!
I heard the other day that it's been sold to the council and the club's moving to a new purpose-built council stadium ... not before time (about 40 years late!)

Got to be Frickley during the miners strike.
Think it was a cup game of some sort and seem to remember Phil Gardiner scoring the winner.
And didn't the team coaches windows get put in at some point ?
I was only young at the time but remember the police chasing one guy up the slag heap !!

Frickley, as when you drove up to the ground all but a few of the shantys were boarded up.

The bar was under the main stand and you had to walk through the players tunnel to get to it and it smelt damp!

sh*tHOLE ::)

Vics new ground- nice ground when it is finished but mickey mouse organisation. Got in for a tenner cos they had no change. A mate wanted to buy refreshments but got ignored by the teenage staff and they had to borrow stewards from Alty and Witton.
Ashton Utd- Difficult to find. The taxi-driver took me to Curzon Ashton's old ground on last visit. Not very well organised, ran out of programs when they played Hyde in play-offs. No-one knew wot was going on.
Droylsden- awful ground, though improved with terrace behind the goal, ball boys as stewards , terrace covered in pigeon sh*t. Apparently things have improved at Droylsden.
Shrewsbury's old ground.
Deva Stadium- poor organisation, in the middle of nowhere, poor program, impatient supporters. If Chester aren't 1 nil up after 5 minutes the supporters are slagging them off.

Has any progress been made in the search for your own ground? £5,000 is a hell of a lot to be paying out for staging every home game.

Hey Chris mate, I know things must look bleak right now, but think on. Someone somewhere tends to dive in, when did a proper team last go under? RIeally hope you'll be ok. Bit of  a pisser though if admin beckons, as you're in a play off position now which could sirt everything if you went up?

Admin, might be better to move this to the Rotherham thread?
