who is your worst alty striker, mines Tunnecliffe AKA Mr Blobby! heard from many Williams was aweful to!!!
-
How many did Tunna actually score for us? I was only young when he played and I remember him scoring a grand total of one!!
-
Jonathan Mitten was pretty pants, but Tunna would have to take the biscuit (or possibly more!) We've had a few truly awful strikers, far too many to mention here.
-
Hold on a mo, Tunna scored a cracker at Wycombe to almost spoil thier promotion party, many worse than him. My all timer is Derek Furnival from the mid 70's, truly awful and so slow I can remember. There were a few recently in the Unibond years granted, but none thankfully ever lingered.

No it has just sprung from my brain, like the thing in Alien............Darren Royle, no contest.
-
Darren Royle the worst by a distance - no contest.
-
I am reminded of one Wayne Entwisle.......and also (I think) Chris Young???

By a country mile!
-
Please give me a profile on williams everybody just says his name and cant even explain how bad he was,lol!!!! ;D
-
Lutel James for an aclaimed international did nothing to impress me ;)
-
Ah, with Lutel James you're now talking about an ex BUry player who had done well in the conference with Accrington. Whata complete and utter let dow he was.
So to change tack slightly who is the most disappointing ex ALty striker? For me, I expected more from Gary Powell when we signed him but he was startlingly ineffective. Howver I don't think we paid much for him so as far players we paid for, well, Martin Hanchard was dead highly rated but I was suprised at him when he got here. I think Colin WIlliams wasn't quite what we had hoped either although by then he was past his prime I guess.
On the plus side Ken McKenna was a big signing, cost money but was someone we knew was a class player. He surpassed himself while at Alty though (and indeed since he has left). Sometimes your heroes turn out to be not what you hoped, getting to know them sometimes can shatter a lot of dreams, not Kenny Mac. True Alty legend.
-
In terms of dissapointment its a close call between keith russell who signed permanently for us and had a clause in his new contract saying he would stand off-side for every second he spent on the pitch (which wasnt an awful lot of seconds), or dare I say Leroy Chambers.
It broke my heart each week seeing Chambers turn up to spectate in a flash suit paid for by the lads on the terrace who saved up for their clobber! More of a niggling injury to the club than a dissapointment.
-
Gary Hulmes? Big name signing from Cliftonville (or somewhere in Norn Ireland) - didn't score once
Tony Sullivan? We got him fit so he could knock us out of the FA Cup the following season
-
Dave Esdaille - I remember him clearing the bar at Witton from about 5 yards with an empty net in front of him.
-
Gary hulme was from Limerick i think,
I too found Chambers a great let down and felt he was never committed enough a very lazy player
but worst has to be Furnival an oil tanker could turn quicker
-
However, on the few occasions that Great Harwood scored against Alty in the 70's, it was normally Furnival on the scoresheet! (same applies to Tony Sullivan)
-
Not necessarily the worst playing striker but his efforts (or lack of) warrant this. Have we already forgotten Peter Thompson :o ;)

I was trying..... ;D
-
Easy. Darren Royle.
Dis-Honourable mention for Kevin Hawkins - not strictly a striker but whenever a "worst player" threads start, hes always in my head !!!!
-
Dave Martindale

i saw that new shrine of him in barneys the other day though
-
HA HA, i'm going to ask heathcoat who he thinks tommrow.... honest!!! :o
-
Paul Dobell - and we paid £500 for him I believe - typical ex-vics material (but they could do with him now!)
-
Dave Martindale
:D
Altho not a striker, I'm going to nominate him in Flynnys absence of his behalf!
How did you sum him up Brian?

Well i think he must take it then!!! i would set up an official poll but works pc wont let me >:(

This ridiculous maligning of the peerless Tunna is a disgrace, frankly.
For the record, his Alty statistics read as follows:
33 League & Cup Appearances
5 goals (and every one was a gem).
Worst Alty striker candidates:
Dave Furnivall: about as mobile as a grand piano;
Wayne Entwistle: just woeful;
Paul Williams: indescribably abysmal;
Gary Hulmes: cost £5,000....and was a total flop;
John Donnelley: came from South Liverpool circa 1984....and soon disappeared;
Garry Hooley: never looked happy away from the slag heap at Frickley;
Chris Young: even slower than Phil Taylor when it's his turn to get a round of drinks in;
Adewale Ajetunmeobi: clueless.
-
He did have something i agree, a presence, but i remember a hugh sigh when he came on once, never heard that before :o

That wasn't a sigh, it was a huge gasp of awe....
-
Chris Young :
The DUFFER of all duffers.

For the record, his Alty statistics read as follows:

In fairness did he not have a spell where he looked something remotely resembling a then conference striker. He didn't score for ages but scored a header against Dagenham I think. I'll wager those 5 goals came in about the last 12 games of the 92-93 season. Oh no his first goal was away at Kettering I think. His other goals were away at Wycombe (!) and a 30 yarder at Farnborough, can't remember the other.

Witton Albion at Moss Lane.
An exquisite chip at the Chequers end.
-
I think the overwhelming conclusion to Ian Tunnacliffe's Alty career is that is wasn't worth the hassle he, us and Emley ahd to go through for it.
Although who knows, maybe he was proud to have played for us.
On a seperate note. Steve Saunders + Goalscoring ability = Chris Senior?
-
Was Jamie Phoenix a striker? or just a waste of space?

Darren Royle used to call him the Ark royal as he took so long to turn
-
nehru mckenzie personally.
He wasn't a striker.

Dis-Honourable mention for Kevin Hawkins - not strictly a striker but whenever a "worst player" threads start, hes always in my head !!!!
Sorry but based purely on his performance against Barrow in either the Cup or the Trophy when he kicked Kenny Lowe up in the air at what seemed like 15 second intervals for just over an hour Kevan Hawkins should be excused almost anything

FA Trophy Third Round tie at Moss Lane February, 1989.
Alty won 5-3.
Played in a howling gale.

That's the one
-
Worst Alty striker, im torn between Darren Royle and Paul Williams. I forgot most things about royle other than his looping header from outside the box against witton in a cheshire cup semi final, probably the only goal he scored for us. abysmal. Paul Williams was equally as useless, i remember beating cheadle 6-0 in what must have been a cheshire cup match, he was even woeful in that!
-
I think that four of Tunna's five goals were:-
Bromsgove Rovers (A)....lost 4-1 on his debut the week after Port Vale beat us in the FA Cup
Kettering Town (A)........drew 1-1
Wycombe Wanderers (A)..won 2-0...the day Wycombe won the Conference & Martin O'Neill apologised to about 6,000 Wycombe fans on the pitch after the game.This goal was on both Sky News & BBC News.
Farnborough (A)........won 5-2 on the last game of the season
I'm struggling for the fifth one though & I'm a bit vague about the Farnborough one as well!!
-
The fifth one was at home to Dagenham, a bullet header from about 3 yards out.

Brian,
Tunna didn't score on his debut at Bromsgrove.
His five goals were as follows: Dagenham (H) (as accurately described by Alty365); Kettering (A); Wycombe Wanderers (A); Witton Albion (H) and Farnborough (A) - all in the 1992/93 season.
-
Farnboeough away, Tunnas scores from 30 yards, Steve Saunders nervelessly finishes scores a penalty and Mick Hayde pops up with an acrobatic overhead kick!
Sheesh! ::)
-
Cult.....shame on me.Was it Clive Freeman who scored at Bromsgrove?

Paul France scored at Bromsgrove.
Paladino's last game for Alty!
