Looking at the bench, we're clearly expecting to go one or two down and bring all the attacking subs on with 7 minutes to go.

Maybe so. I hope we can continue to frustrate them. For all their attractive football it's useless without the end product.

10 mins - All the early questions have been asked by York. They've been probing away at the Robins for a good 10 minutes now and have yet to find any weakness.

The visitors have even found the odd outlet for their own attacking ambitions and Robbie Lawton probably should have done better when a fantastic Jake Sedgemore pass found him in acres of space on the right flank.

There's nothing much to write home about yet but if Alty keep their shape and continue to put in the hard yards, York will soon become frustrated.

Title: Re: Live radio coverage tonight
Post by: Darren on September 04, 2007, 08:10:47 PM
Connor in good form

15 mins - Alty have started to see more of the ball in the past five minutes, although much of the action has been in their own half.

We're not even a quarter of the way into the game though and already I feel exhausted.

No it's not due to the almost impossible quest to find parking near Bootham Crescent (although that did leave me less than pleased), it's through listening to the home manager Billy McEwen exercise his vocal chords.

He's not sat down since the game started and the only sound echoing around the strangely sedate ground are his strained cries. If the York fans were ever looking to improve the atmosphere at the Snickers Crescent then he could be a one-man choir.

Actually that's quite a scary thought! He'd need a stand to himself.

We'd all be happy with a point I think won't we?

We're worse up front but better at the back than Rushden apparently.
Title: Re: Live radio coverage tonight
Post by: Darren on September 04, 2007, 08:12:52 PM
They just get better

20 mins - Still very little to report at Maltesers Crescent.

Much of the game is being played out in midfield and Alty are more than holdinjg their own. Whalley has dropped slightly deeper than at Stafford and the five-man midfield is doing a sterling job.

All York have been able to muster was another half chance, Ben Purkiss whipping a cross invitingly across the front of a very crowded goalmouth. Nobody there to finish it though.

Title: Re: Live radio coverage tonight

30 mins - You get the feeling that the Mars Bar Crescent faithful are very much waiting to be entertained here.

They've yet to really break into full voice and haven't provided their team with much encouragement. Maybe that's what three straight defeats has done to the frustrated support.

They did come close again, however, when Richard Brodie got in behind Munroe down Alty's right channel. The big striker got his shot off but Stuart Coburn got down sharply to make a smart save.

At the other end, Logan shot hooked a shot well over the bar from 20 yards, but that's about as close as his side have gone.

25 mins - It's been a more productive spell for Alty, with O'Neill actually managing to acquaint himself with the ball. Carlos Logan has also come more into the game and you can't help but feel that if Alty utilise his pace, there could be something in this game for them.

York don't seem to be particularly comfortable facing the winger at full pelt and on one foray towards the York box, he went down under a challenge from right back Ben Purkiss. No free kick and no yellow card for Logan though so I don't know what the referee's thinking was.

Post by: Darren on September 04, 2007, 08:30:39 PM
The best yet

35 mins - York aren't giving up.

They continue to knock on the door but Alty aren't letting them in.

McEwen hasn't given up either and if he's not a candidate for a vocal chord transplant by the time he's 60 then I'd be surprised!

He'd be given a run for his money in any shouting contest by Alty's Darren Tinson, whose familiar cries of "squeeze, squeeze!" can also be heard all round the Yorkie Crescent.

Actually, all this talk of confectionary has got me thinking. What really is the best chocolate treat available in your corner shop?

My vote goes to the humble Double Decker. I'd be happy to defend my choice against all comers. Post a comment below the commentary feed if you dare.

Best chocolate for me is a mars bar

maybe in future after we score a goal to go ahead Coburn should pretend to be injured (use keeper so doesn't have to go off to get treatment) so the rest of the team can compose themselves before the restart!
Title: Re: Live radio coverage tonight
Post by: Darren on September 04, 2007, 08:47:05 PM
HALF TIME - 45 minutes of very mixed emotions for Alty.

They defended extremely well as a team for a full 45 minutes and Tinson's goal was a fitting reward for their hard work and for one of the visitors' top performers.

It was exactly the break the Robins needed if they were to stand any chance of getting a result here.

But just as their luck seemed to be turning, they lost concentration once again. Too many times this season lapses in concentration have been Alty's downfall and they will all be so frustrated that it's happened again.

But it's happened now and they'll need to just put it behind them and produce a performance equal to that in the first half after the break. Space will open up as players get tired and with Colin Potts, Pat McFadden and Chris Senior all on the bench, the Robins have players who can exploit weary legs.

GOAL - 50 mins - York 2 (Brayson) Alty 1 - Bad news, York have taken the lead.

Even worse, it's come from former Vics striker Paul Brayson. It had certainly been coming.

Alty had been starting to get forward well, virtually playing 4-3-3 at times, with Lawton and Logan getting forward much more to support O'Neill. But while that gave them plenty of options up front, it also opened up the game - something which can only suit York.

Senior's warming up now. Can Alty rescue something from a game that seems to be drifting away from them

Post by: Darren on September 04, 2007, 09:04:31 PM
55 mins - The expected substitution has come, with Senior entering the action but, perhaps surprisingly, it's Logan that he's replaced. Perhaps the winger still isn't quite fit after spending much of the summer without a club.

Senior moves up front to partner O'Neill, while Peyton shifts to the left flank. It's a positive move but will it make much difference with York now seemingly finding their groove?

Title: Re: Live radio coverage tonight
Post by: Darren on September 04, 2007, 09:13:10 PM
60 mins - It's settled down slightly now, with the game assuming a similar pattern to the majority of the first half.

The tension is killing McEwen, who is still shouting at his team to play more compact and cut down the space in the middle.

But to come back to the earlier Topic of connversation (see what I did there?), the Double Decker is far superior to the two chocolate bars suggested in the comments below.

Now, to Mr Choco, I will admit the Boost is a mighty fine chocolate bar, a real hearty treat and perfect for getting you through those long days at work.

But it lacks subtlety. It lacks the complexity of the Double Decker and is far too heavy to become a bar for daily use.

The Flake isn't bad for a treat but surely makes too much of a mess for the sophisticated eater to even consider eating it.

And Turkish Delight? Don't get me started, that's just wrong on so many levels!

Tinson?

Lawton?

No-one else seems willing to shoot

70 mins - Sean Clancy makes his debut after all. The 19-year-old comes on as a straight swap for Aspinall at left back and is immediately thrust into the action.

He looks solid enough and has coped well with challenges both on the ground and in the air.

Potts had Alty's best chance of the half when Senior hooked the ball to him on the edge of the area but his shot cleared the ball by a long way. He never really caught hold of it.

It was only a half-chance but it shows there will be opportunities if Alty are alert enough to take them.

Why is our foul count always very low,but we seem to get players booked or sent off,not saying we should be dirty though.

75 mins - Heathcote is absolutely fuming.

The Alty boss directs his anger at any match official he can find after Senior puts the ball into the net but is called offside.

The players also protest the decision at length but are getting nowhere with the referee. They certainly do feel hard done by and who can blame them? They've not exactly had the best of luck with referees of late

80 mins - A golden opportunity goes begging.

Potts whipped in a cracking ball from a free kick on the right, finding Munroe in acres of space eight yards out.

But the defender couldn't find the net. His header is too close to keeper Stephen Henderson and the on-loan Bristol City man is able to get down to make the save.

There won't be many more opportunities as good as that.

85 mins - It's a hotly contested battle as we approach the last five minutes.

Both teams are finding space to create chances and York came close to scoring once again when David McGurk's towering header from Woolford's corner drifted wide.

The home fans are urging the popular Onome Sodje to use his pace up front but the former Gravesend man has been dealt with well by the Alty defence, which has only frustrated them more.

It's going to be a nervy final spell, with Alty now throwing everything they have into attack. There's not much point doing anything else!

GOAL - 90 (+2) - York 2 Alty 2 (O'Neill) - This tail is more twisted than a pig's!

Absolutely unbelievable. Alty have drawn level in the second minute of injury time, O'Neill rising to head home Potts' right wing corner.

Remarkable and well-deserved!

Well done to GH in turning it round early enough this time! He's learning!

And we had one disallowed and Munroe missed a sitter. Just sort out the stupid mistakes at the back and we've a chance of getting this win. Despite us being toothless up front supposedly we've scored in every game bar Grays this season.

GH deserves great credit for making the changes that he did. We seemed to put them under a lot of pressure in the closing stages and Potts was the supplier of the equaliser. Well done for a good battling performance.

Interesting to see that Oxford conceded in the last minute and that might have knocked their confidence a bit. On the flip side of the coin we should be buoyed by our last minute equaliser. Come on Alty, that first win is just around the corner!
