Perhaps the work commitments at Man Utd and England were the deciding factor?

Cheers rod, you've been an absolute legend for this club and if every player had your enthusiasm then we'd be top of the league!

Good luck!

Sad to see Rod go, has been a very good player for us over a number of seasons. His excellent control, and good touches showed a touch of class for the side. Recently his goal against man utd was superb, and could score some excellent goals. Shame he has been plagued by injury. He has worked very hard for us both on and off the pitch.

So many moments of Rod....who could forget Nuneaton in the Cup (Go On Rod,Go On!!!),the play off final, the trademark cartwheel, and his goal at St Albans.

Will be missed by everyone at the club, good luck at Witton.

Rod will do a top job for Witton.

A true legend at Alty in my book, for the things he did on and off the pitch.

From the shirts that made us thousands to him always being at club functions and always giving 100%.

Thanks Rod, top man.

The happiness on his face when Acton saved the penalty against Grays was lovely. He was warming up by the family stand and you could just see how much he loves the club. We will miss him, good luck for the future Rod xxx

Rod epitomises what being a true club man means.  His commitment to Alty during his time has been great as were most of his goals.  Sad to see him go but I suppose all good things must come to an end.  I still think he could have done a good job on the field but he needed to be playing regularly.
Good luck Rod and thanks for the memories.

What an inspiring quality player loved by the fans leaving so many memories.

We think we've had it tough over the last decade but Rod is the latest in a line of legends to spring up and stand proud alongside the likes of all the heroes of yesteryear....perhaps even prouder in these days of low pay and struggle. Rod has not been loyal coz of a big pay packet.

One of my all time favourite players in 30 years of watching Alty...when that list includes players like the 'cote, Barry Howard, John Rogers, Bomber Harris, it's some accolade.

Welcome back anytime Rodders...

has he gone to Witton to see if his voice breaks?

there's an all singing all dancing tribute to Rodders on the star site www.altystartrust.com

Another sad day to rank alongside Mad Dog and Chrissy going, another harsh reminder of the level we're at. Just a top, top man. I hope he's not too upset about this, speaking to him on Monday you could see how disappointed he was not to be playing. The word legend is overused but he is one, from his goals right through to his speech at last seasons race night.

A bloke who has played a huge part in saving Alty from disappearing off the footballing radar. I don't think people will ever forget his initial impact, goals against Nuneaton, Vics on Boxing day and one of my favourite all time Alty moments against Eastbourne. Good luck Rod.

I don't see much of the players (life of an exile) but Rod always stood out as the most enthusiastic of them all, even when he'd travelled hundred+ miles just to be a sub he was still full of smiles and enjoying being part of things.  Favourite Rod goal was St Albans last year.

Good luck Rod and thanks for all you've done

I thought that the writing was on the wall for Rod when Pat McFadden was selected in preference to him at Stafford Rangers last Monday.

To my mind, it's a sensible move for both parties.

Some great Thornley memories, particularly during the first half of the 2001/02 season, when he was at his peak.

I just hope that his move to Witton doesn't mean that Cavell Coo drops back to the bench!

Let's hope that we are writing similarly eulogistic tributes to Carlos Logan in six years from now.

Rod is a true gent and a legend. I hope, maybe selfishly, he retains links with Alty.

I wish him all the very best whatever he oes & wherever he goes & I will keep doing the Rod-watch whenever England are on the telly.

This should never have been allowed to happen. Given a first team place, I'm sure he could score more goals than the rest of the strikers. Gutted.

Unfortunately I disagree.

I think the injuries Rod has suffered have mounted up, I can't remember the last time Rod completed 90 mins for the first team in a competitive mach. Hard decisions have to be made in football, and if it's best for the club for Rod to move on then that's the way it has to be.

On a more positive note, thanks Rod for all the great memories, a true Alty legend!

A model (semi) professional and a great lad. Hope wherever he goes he gets first team football as he's got a good shot and a good instinct for goal. Was a really entertaining member of the squad and deserves regular first team football somewhere!

Sorry to see Rod go - a great pro, great servant to Alty and above all a really nice lad. He made a lovely gesture to my 5 year old son whilst he was warming up to come on at St Albans, before treating us to a cracking goal and trade mark cartwheel.
Thanks again Rod and all the best for the future. :(

Has there ever been an Alty player who has done more than Rod off the field for this club? I doubt it very much. He will be missed by everyone.
My 10 year old grandson will be more than gutted he will be devastated, when I tell him his hero has gone.
My misses always remembers his late late goal at Bradford Park Avenue as we were making our way towards the exit at the other end. We knew it was Rod that had scored, by the celebration even from long distance.
All the best for the future Rod. Hope you keep in touch with Moss Lane.
A true Alty legend.

I used to take a wheelchair bound girlfriend of mine to Moss Lane and we sat in the wee shelter in front of the main stand. Dawn, my friend, had a thing for Rod and it made her day - to say the least - when Rod came over for a quick "Hello" at half time in one match.

A true gent, thoughtful, warm hearted and a great ambassador for the club.

As I write one of my cats leaps up on to my lap - his name? Thornley - in recognition of an Alty favourite.
