Title: Website - Men's team squad
Post by: ianpickles on July 11, 2022, 10:16:53 AM
It would be really great if this part of the website could be completed. Currently it says 'We are in the process of updating our squads for the 22/23 season.' Anyone know when this will happen, please?

I should have thought we'll have to wait until the team and squad photos have been taken (and we've finished assessing the trialists)?

Once again I refer you to the excellent website operated by the peerless Mr John Laidler. It might look like it’s from the 90’s but it has everything you need and all much quicker than either of the new sites have managed. I’m a big fan of function over form

Absolutely. The yunguns are more impressed by flashing lights and razamataz than content. It was forever thus.

It would be nice to have some data on The Women's Teams too.

That element of the official site (pre recent update) hadn't been updated for about 3 years

It’s July. It’s pre season. Trialists have played ONE game. How can they website be updated accordingly? Team photo on July 28th. I’d imagine everything will be pretty much sorted by then.

I guess it depends on what you need and what the content should be. I think a football clubs website in 2022 should be modern, easy for the casual visitor to navigate, be 100% about the actual club, commercially strong and also compatible with social media. The current site does all that.

I'll hazard a guess that if you asked everyone (not just our hard core fans) who visits the site why they do, then a big chunk of it will be match information, ticket sales, buy merchandise, important news about the club or because they followed a link off Twitter or wherever.

I was looking for peripheral things like the score in the actual match the team had just played (JL was hours faster) or match reports on those games (still can’t find one on either of Saturdays games in the main site) or a list of who the first team players are.

Yes it all looks nice but there is a minimum level of timely content that you have to get right before you get to cover the home page with a massive advert for the new kit!

It's only ever going to be as good as its administration. At the moment that seems to be incredibly poor.

If only John Laidlar could work with the new website
.
I think if John was to curate content in a blog format, Hosted on the website (similar to that of the Alty Insider), the info would be read by a huge number of people, which I'm sure Gibran could find a way to convert in to advertising revenue, food for thought maybe.

Honestly, the things people can find to complain about on this forum is astounding.

Really?  You think it’s unreasonable to suggest the the club website should have match reports from the preseason friendlies and a list of at least the names of the first team squad?  The club have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years but the website and the fanzine fiasco are not up to the required standard.

No one expects the club to get everything right all the time but we can point out shortcomings when we see them and the irritate us. Not being able to find the friendlies scores on the official site and having to go to an unofficial source on Saturday was irritating and given the ‘new website’ fanfare I’m providing my feedback on it.

Sadly, the alternative is to praise a job which is done to a less than professional standard because it has been done by a volunteer who is unable to accept criticism. Most organisations are run by such people and the result is usually mediocrity brought about by an unwillingness to challenge the status quo.

Give me function over form any day. Long live Alty Files.

We’re in the process of recruiting someone for social media. At the moment Gibran is covering most of the social media and website and he’s hours behind living in Arizona for the time being. There’s quite clearly a gap since Ed stepped down. As with most things pre season I’m sure it’ll get ironed out come the start of the season.

It's interesting you say that because the changes to the official website quite possibly came about after the fans survey as part of the 5 year plan. The opinion among the fan base was clearly strong enough for the status quo to be challenged...

I think the criticisms of the new site on here are fair and valid, and people are entitled to prefer what it replaced (and credit to John Laidlar for keeping it going and the work he puts in).  But the "old" site had considerable faults too in my view and it had its detractors as the survey proved.

All in all, I much prefer what we now have and I'm sure others feel the same too.  I'm not saying this to have a dig at any individual's efforts but a bit of context is needed.

A professional club should have a professional website.

It looks very good and does have room for improvement, but I would be very surprised if this was not remedied shortly.

Absolutely we must stand up for free speech, which sometimes means telling people things they don't want to hear.

The first team men are up on the official website. Thank you to whoever has worked hard on that. And thanks to Bath Alty who reminded us that John's site has a squad list and pen pictures at the bottom of page one. I think John's site is brilliant, and have told him so, but had forgotten that there was so much info right down the page!

thats how it should be Andrew,we all have our part to play.that was why i said about no match day text commentary its was not perfect but it was a good back up when RR went down.I do hope we get something like it back. Now as for RR being on Radio Alty, what is going to happen to the chat room we all use on match days on RR,its something as exciles we use all the time.Even down to JD's jokes.

Yawn all you like - but the lack of a match report (not even a minimal one) 18 hours after the game has finished doesn't reflect well in my opinion.

It's far from perfect, but there's so much going on there's bound to be teething troubles.
I was going on about not having the season ticket figures the other day but as it was (correctly) pointed out to me, there's so much needing to be done at the moment with the change to full time.
I know it's not ideal but we just need to have a bit of patience mate.

I could have completely got the wrong end of the stick here but did I recently read somewhere that the match reports were being uploaded by someone in America?
I know it's crazy 🤪
The slight 'Americanisms' such as
Final instead of Final Score.
Using the singular Alty Wins rather than Alty Win.

PS. Could be way off beam here!

Great to see the websites content is now being consolidated by match reports etc.
I agree with others that say, once it has got through it’s teething problems it will be a concise and informative site.
