Title: Pre-season friendlies
Post by: Saughall Robin on April 22, 2022, 05:22:34 PM
See on the official club website we're playing WD&C on the 9th July.
That close season is getting shorter and shorter - less than eight weeks this year! 😉

PS. Who else would you folks like us to play?
Vauxhall Motors or Chester away for me for obvious reasons! 😂😂

WD&C suits me down to the ground!.

Would like to us see pitted against higher ranked opposition for a couple of games

I think we should be setting our pre season friendlies at a higher standard in readiness for a crucial new season ahead. ie at least a couple of EFL teams.

Absolutely right Ray. We certainly won't learn much about any trialists by pitting them against opposition like Trafford or Huddersfield U21. We should be looking to persuade the likes of Rochdale, Crewe, and Bradford City to come here with a full strength squad.

The reason we didn't play any friendlies against League sides last season was because the EFL and NL seasons were not aligned, so teams would have been at different stages of preparation/fitness. Assuming the leagues' calendars are back in synch next season, I'm sure we'll be playing some EFL teams.

Assuming at that date it’s the first PSF of our season & it’s a good one to open with a much lower ranked but local club. Work up after that to one of the many local NPL sides before some regional outfit like Chester & then let’s get the EFL sides in-Stockport for one. TBF our start to the season this season was our best in a very long time so the relatively weaker oppo clearly wasn’t a problem.

Of course, when we played WD&C last time, we played Ashton United later the same day. Maybe we're considering a similar exercise this time. I'd planned to do both games, but in the end my back put paid to both.

As the WD&C is listed as a noon KO (on WD&C twitter) I suspect another double header

Weren't there rumours of an away trip to Derry City (possibly owing to a connection between them and Alty director Cathal Morrison)?

I thought that's how we came to go to Brightlingsea Regent last year? Or was that another director connection?,

The main reason we didn't play any higher opposition in friendlies last pre-season was that we couldn't play any home games, due to the pitch being replaced.

As long as they are near a railway station

Yes. Crewe would be great for us too. 😊

Any chance of Largs Thistle or even Kilwinning Rangers?

Above Birmingham might be nice after spending every other weekend in the South East

Sorry, yes, you're quite right. The point I made above about the mismatch between the NL and EFL seasons is the reason we couldn't play friendlies against EFL teams in preparation for last season.

Stockport, Salford, Crewe - all good options

I'm sure we'll end up going to Trafford, possibly someone like Nantwich too

Wythenshaw Town away July 9th, 3-30pm ko.

Another double header to start with.

With both opposition teams being in the same division I expect a more even split teams from us

Whilst in Northern Ireland a tour including Larne (Full time - very ambitious), Linfield (Full time - usual champions), and Lisburn distillery (part time, historic - two div lower but within walking distance of my inlaws) would make sense

My eyes were magically drawn to that word too! Just play them three times.

Play them once and if you've had enough you'll see three games.
