Title: Player called Street in 1968
Post by: Sale Holmfield on November 07, 2021, 10:36:14 PM
A strange request, but somebody I know who supports Crewe Alexandra and tries to get complete details of lineups has asked if I know the first name of this player who played in our defeat to  Crewe in 1968.

I wasn't there (my excuse being that I was three years old), John Liaidlar's list of players from that season only has him by surname, while the Cult's piece about the later match in 1979  in "When we were kings" does refer to the earlier game in some detail, but doesn't mention Mr Street. If the Cult or one of our older supporters knows the player's first name, my friend would be very grateful, I am sure.

Geoff Street was a tall central defender and I believe that he made a total of 11 Northern Premier League appearances for Alty during that division's inaugural 1968/69 season.

He joined Alty from Southport and then moved on to Barrow for the 1969/70 season.

He was subsequently a member of Morecambe's 1974 FA Trophy winning team, in which he played alongside the former Macclesfield and Alty midfielder Dave Roberts as well as striker Tony Webber, who went on to sign for the Robins in December 1976.

Some classic 1970s hairstyles on the following photograph (Geoff Street is top left on the second row, standing next to a somewhat cantankerous-looking Dave Roberts. Tony Webber is the one directly behind the ball on the front row):

My mind may be playing tricks but as I remember it he was never quite good enough to get a regular spot. I thought he was seen as a slight upgrade on Derek Halliwell but he wasn't.

I always thought that Tony Webber was a Class Act.

Although I don't think that his Alty career ever really saw him consistently achieve the high level that had been expected of him.

He was recruited at the the same time as a certain Jeff Johnson and, if I remember correctly, the respective quoted transfer fees were £1,500 to Morecambe for Tony Webber and £500 to Hyde United for Jeff Johnson.

It was the latter who would proceed to have an illustrious playing career with the Robins.

I am glad I opened this thread, and didn't expect so many knowledgeable answers! I do enjoy reading about the old players, and can remember Tony Webber playing for us, and, possibly, Dave Roberts playing against us (I may have confused Dave Carrick and Mike Roberts as ex-players whom I saw play against us, though, I fear).

Now Geoff Street has been identified, I can see that in recent years, he has worked as a match host at Morecambe, where he probably had his most successful period.

It is, but it's still rather neat.

Tbh it looks like a kit from we are the champions kids tv show. Yellow socks with all red kit is just a bit odd, isn’t it?
