Title: Ultimate Alty XI
Post by: AltyRobin on March 15, 2021, 11:09:46 PM
With Kevin Ellison’s celebration at weekend it got me thinking of some great players we’ve had in the past and what an ultimate XI would look like from my time watching Alty from 1991.

I’m bound to forget someone but here goes mine. Not including loanees.

                             S. Coburn

S. Cross         G. Young        T. Hannigan        D. Adams

                  T. Kelly                  I. Craney

D. Watmore            R. Colclough               K. Ellison

                              C. Little

Subs: N. Morton, K. Russell, A. Reid, C. Sharratt, S. Terry

No Nick Daws?

No Showler?

No Mad Dog or Talbs?

Kingy, JR, Jeff Johnson, Ken McKenna?

Answered this a couple of times and probably give a different team on different reflections, but:

Stuart Coburn

Shaun Densmore
Mark Maddox
Tom Hannigan
Ryan Shotton

Duncan Watmore
Robbie Lawton (c)
Jake Moult
Josh Hancock

Damian Reeves
Colin Little

Subs: Ian Craney, Colin Potts, Val Owen, Scott Leather, Rod Thornley, Danny Adams, Tony Thompson

Manager: Lee Sinnott*

*Parky takes over this side with a mid table National League finish.

Every time I do this there are probably little differences, but today I'm going with:

                              Coburn

Cross         Ellender         Reid           Wiggins

Terry          Daws          Anderson     Showler

                 McKenna      Little

Subs:
Wealands
Hodson
Carmody
Reeves
Harris

Given your 'personal' picture (don't know the correct term, being a bit of a luddite,😉), I'm quite surprised at one glaring omission!

😂😂

Did we ever get to the bottom of the team of the last decade?

I think the consensus was:

                        Coburn

Densmore   Havern   Hannigan    Griffin

Watmore     Moult      Richman     Clee

                 Reeves     Hulme

Leather over Havern for me. I know it isn't entirely practical as an XI but I'd have Hancock in over Richman, otherwise struggling to think of many changes. Great side that.

I've been privileged to see so many great players giving me so many magic moments over the last 55+years supporting the Super Robins. I couldn't begin to whittle it down to a best eleven.
All I would say is that any 'best' team and squad would have to find places for Jackie Swindells and Johnny King.

My all time fav team from players i've seen since late 70s is above... but if i had to pick a team from last decade it would be as follows...

                             Coburn
Densmore   Havern   Leather   Griffin
     Watmore   Moult   Lawton   Clee
                     Reeves   Hulme

Subs: Thompson, Hannigan, Richman, Hancock, Lawrie

With so many greats over the years I couldn't keep a best XI down to 11 players!

He's the ultimate magic sponge man for the team isn't he?

PS. With Rod Thornley to be the masseur! 😉

I am sure we have done this recently but I have to amend it because Colclough is that good and will battle it out with Ellison.

Coburn

Densmore
Danny Adams
Shotton
Hannigan

Ellison or Colclough
Watmore
Craney
Daws or Harris

Little
McKenna

Subs Reeves, Showler, Leather, Moult, Cross & Ellender

I also loved Keith Russell, some finisher but going more on appearances.

The reason I went Craney is because he was in the poorest Alty team and was basically a one man team with his performances each week.

No mention of the late great Jackie Swindells ... Surprising.

Has there ever been a worse 11 mentioned on here?

Andy Dawber
Simon Woodford
Brian Kilcline
Danny Higgingbotham
LB ?
Brian Smikle
Fabio Bassangue
Chris Young
Billy Hasler-Cregg
Jamie Menagh
Byron Harrison

Manager: Neil Young

Struggling to think of a left back that’s been as bad as some of these

I would have gone for Peter Frankish between the sticks.

PS. That is if our northern Irish international Bobby Irvine is unavailable.
I seem to recall Freddie Pye saying in the Robins Review something like "he will never make such mistakes in an altrincham Jersey again. His contract has been cancelled" after his last stand out performance.

What I find great about this thread is how you can get an idea of the age of the posters by the choices they've made! 😂😂😂

Alty mascot in the pre WW2 days. Apparently buried somewhere near the corner of the golf road and pop side.

Hope they don't dig him up when they lay the new pitch!
(if they haven't already!)

Maybe he's the cause of the waterlogging problems in that area of the pitch 🐐

Poor old Jeb will be well rotted down by now.

Does anybody have photos of Jeb, preferably when s/he was alive?

Or the legendary Jackie Swindells.

My grandad would pretend his fingers were Swindells and showed me how he played and scored on his dining table.

Use to tell me he liked scoring 5 a game haha.

229 games 195 goals.

I have always thought Jackie was the ultimate goal poacher. I remember once an opposition fan (in the good old days when there was a lot of friendly unaggressive banter at games) saying that he did nothing in games except for popping up two or three times a game to score.
He seemed to think that was a bad thing.
Wasn't Jimmy greaves talked of in a similar manner?

I can almost hear that away fan giving JS adverse criticism convinced he was talking sense. 😂 😂 😂
