Just seen the news that ex Alty Manager Tommy Docherty has passed away aged 92

Undoubtedly one of football's great characters, however his bemusing appointment as Altrincham FC manager always seemed like some sort of bizarre publicity stunt.

We scraped a 1-0 victory in an FA Trophy tie at Hyde United.

He did, however, do one great business deal during his short stay. When he sold full back Paul Edwards to Crewe, he put a sell-on clause into the contract - not common back then - and when he subsequently moved on to Coventry City we received a tidy sum. £25K rings a bell.
He was a character. RIP Tommy.

Saturday, 19th December 1987.
We scraped a 1-0 victory in an FA Trophy tie at Hyde United.
We had signed Trevor Ross, once of Arsenal and Everton, from Hyde just before that match, although he didn't play, probably as he wasn't signed in time, as he did play for us in a later round.
A couple of years later I worked with someone who knew Trevor Ross, and the latter had told him that "the Doc's" plan was for him to arrive in a helicopter and land on the artificial pitch before the match to be introduced to the away supporters. Not surprisingly, Hyde rejected this idea.
It was certainly one of the most unusual managerial reigns we have had - I can remember him still presenting his show on Piccadilly Radio before matches - but RIP to one of the great football characters.

Was that the game they came at us chucking bricks? Remember running away in company with Ian Moss, who was so busy looking back at them he run into a stanchion. Happy days!

A good point. We had a 20% sell on clause & the transfer fee from Crewe to Coventry was £300,000-£350,000, therefore the amount that we received was £60,000-£70,000.
This was a significant event in the history of Altrincham Football Club as the transfer took place in March 1990 & the money received financed the acquisition of Ken McKenna & John Brady in May 1990. It was tax-efficient to spend as much of the money received from Coventry City as possible before the club's tax year end (May 31st).

I have distant memories of us winning that match courtesy of a late penalty scored by Mike Farrelly.

I can't remember who it was against but in one of his first games, maybe even his first, we scraped a 1-0 win away and he gave 3 players their debuts - if memory serves Adrian Mann (who I think scored), Darren Heesom and another who's name escapes me.
I have a cassette tape somewhere with a recording off the radio of that pub meeting mentioned earlier - if I can find it I'll upload it.

A footnote for Alan Partridge fans - researching Adrian Mann on Google and it seems he may have played for Little Oakley over 50s team in recent years. I wonder if he knows Domingo? :D

Jimmy Collins, Bobby Coy and Adrian Mann were the players who made their debuts, but they were all gone by the following month. Adrian Mann scored in the following match.
PS I also have Mick Farrelly scoring a penalty at Hyde later that season.

It's funny how memory works and leaves certain things out. I could remember three players making their debut, and could remember Coy and Mann, but thought it was a home game until I checked, and had completely forgotten Jimmy Collins, whose career lasted longer than the other two.

Actually I think you're right - Timmons's contribution was to win the penalty with a sharp burst into the box. That's the bit I remember because a couple of Hyde fans were quick to tell us how lucky we were to have him. I don't remember who scored the pen but could well have been Farrelly.
