Title: Chesterfield Match Thread
Post by: Inter Alty! on November 16, 2020, 09:52:49 AM
Well, we go again on Tuesday... who knows if any of the walking wounded will be fit... so many injuries... doubt Parky will risk Hancock if didn't put him on from bench on Sat...

Despite being long way to go, we need a win on Tuesday to start building some confidence and moving up the table...

Chesterfield are on the same points as us, but have played a game less... they lost at home on Sat to Maidenhead 2-1...

Possible Team (depending on injuries)...

                             Thompson
Senior   Sass-Davies   Hannigan   Hampson
                         Moult   Robbins
                  Kosylo   Smith   Dales
                             McDonald

Subs: Gould, Dens, Miller, Peers, Adarabioyo...

Whoever plays, need a win... COYR!

He isn't going to drop Peers. Rightly or wrongly, he's our top scorer, poaching 2 goals.

I think he'll go:

                     Thompson
Senior   Sass-Davies   Hannigan   Hampson
                         Moult   Robbins
                  Kosylo   Smith   Dales
                             Peers

Chesterfield have scored 11 goals and conceded the same. If we had some bite up front, their defence would be likely to concede. We haven't. They average more than a goal a game so I'd back them to score at some point. Let's hope that McDonald and Dales are the solution to our biggest problem.

I still believe we need to somehow find a top quality & proven striker (even when all fit) but this is easier said than done when sell your top striker on eve of season & all good strikers at that point are probably under contract at clubs for forthcoming season...

However, in meantime, hopefully McDonald, Smith, & Dales will help us in the short term... Dales (along with Connor & Kosylo) was one of few who played well in last game... Smith & McDonald didn't have enough time on Saturday - hopefully all three will start or be involved tomorrow eve...

Hopefully we'll somehow find a team that gels tomorrow and get a win... then build from there...

In tonight's match programme Sorvs says both Sutton & White could be in contention for the game this eve...

However, assume that means from the bench - no point risking them when Conor had such a good game last time out, and both Sass-Davies & Hannigan are sound (unless Hannigan's back issues play up again)...

What a relief.

A nice birthday present for me!

A trifle fortunate to win that one, particularly as Chesterfield had by far the better opportunities during the second half. However, their defence never looked convincing.

That was Kosylo's best performance to date. Clever dummy in the build-up to Hancock's winning goal.

We never seemed to get to grips with their right wing back Cropper all evening though.

We may have just expedited the delivery of John Pemberton's P45 there.

Huge 3 points and a great winning goal.

The standard was not great and we still looked shaky on crosses. Missing Toby.

Smith had a decent game, only concern is with him and Jake there is no pressing midfielder and against better teams that might be an issue.

Kosylo energy and close control is impressive. He was my MOTM. Dens, Hampson, BSD and Hancock also had decent games.

Happy for Fis that he scored but still far from impressed. Doesn't really win battles and ball control is poor.

3 points to build on. Get in boys.

Well done to Parky and the lads on a well fought for (if bit lucky at times) 3 points.

Went behind early on again but kept creating stuff going forward, so we were always in the game.

TT made a couple of excellent last ditch saves and not sure how Hanks(?) managed to clear one off his own cross-bar, but we also had chances as well. Great to see Hanks back in the goals, the winner was a very well worked and finished off goal. Congrats to Fizzy as well for his decent finish for the first, after decent build up from Matty Kosylo.

We do need to stop giving the ball away as often as we do - against better teams we wouldn't have got away with a win, but delighted we did.

Big 3 points.

Both teams looked nervous but we were the ones trying to play football, they were just a sling it in the box kind of team, understandable if you’ve got Denton but I’d hate to watch that ‘style’ of football every week. The winner was a trademark Alty goal of the last 3 seasons, patient build up, passing to feet then a lovely little dummy & Hancock has clearly got his mojo at this level now. Also thought Dens came in & looked excellent tonight.

Chesterfield looked a very poor outfit to me. It’ll be a long season for them.

Let's be honest, we were a bit lucky tonight but a win is a win and we haven't had much luck lately. We really missed Sutton's experience and Mullarky's height in that box. TT kept us in the game and their right back was superb. However, the stand out player for me was definitely Matty Kosylo. He's just such an exciting player to watch and he is always looking to make things happen. With a decent target man, Josh and Matty would be absolutely lethal. COYR

Great to get a win & 3pts... up the table we go... :)

Maybe little fortunate to take all 3pts with late goal, but what a well worked winning goal... great pass by Dens, then the dummy, then the finish... excellent move...

Thought Kosylo, Dens, Connor, Josh, & TT all did well...
Roll on Saturday...

Agree about the earlier point about Mark Simpson. Not the worst commentator, but think Brian Flynn is best being the main commentator and thought John Edwards did a good job as well
As for the game, think Chesterfield will count themselves unlucky to lose tonight, with the two TT saves in each half, didn't think it was a pen and the JH clearance against the bar. Overall didn't think there was a great deal between both teams. Thought we played some decent football at times, it was probably not a coincidence that it was the best weather so far for a home game, and interesting to see us continue to mix up our usual short passing game with long balls as well. Great to see us get the first home win and hopefully build on this at the weekend.

As people have said earlier, there was a bit of fortune involved in winning, although that has gone against us too in earlier matches, as this happens over the season, even if it does not necessarily even out. Tight margins, but tonight's result is probably bad news for the continuation of John Pemberton's tenure.

It's certainly good to score a few goals in what I thought was a really entertaining game, with good performances from Hampson (again), Kosylo and Thompson, and it's an achievement actually to score a penalty for us, so that can be Josh Hancock's new job.

I am steeling myself now, just about to look at the Chesterfield forum.

Obviously rode our luck, but considering the injury list and a starting line up with 3 loanees at match 9 an excellent result. As others have commented the manner of the winning goal was important, to prove to the players as much as anyone else, that we can play PP and NS's brand of football in this league. Just not all the time and against every team.

Anyway, just for the moment we're above Yeovil, Dagenham, Weymouth and Barnet with Macc not even in sight - just like (very) old times.

Great win tonight and we played well. Great to see Josh Hancock showing us what he is well capable of.

Playing with no crowd is a pain in the arse whenever the ball goes into the stands and players are scrambling about trying to retrieve the ball.

My solution to this is ..... Can the club not assign a dozen eager fans to be ball boys each game? This would see them being gainfully employed as ball boys whilst watching the game (sticking to the COVID Protocols, Masks sanitiser etc).

A different dozen personnel each game would at least get a few folk to see at least one game during these extraordinary times we presently live in.

Just a thought...

Over many years of radio robins Mark is one of my favourite commentators. Don’t forget these guys are volunteers and don’t deserve criticism for their efforts. There are one or two RR guys that aren’t great but they have never been openly criticised on here or the radio robins chat and rightly so. By all means compliment your favourite or a good performance but lay off the volunteers!

We're all very appreciative of the effort the volunteers go to - but at the same time I think constructive criticism is good - after all, they should want to know why some people like myself found the commentary so unbearable that I had to mute it v Solihull and Aldershot.

I can see how it's easy to overthink commentary and it's the (albeit well-intentioned) quips and banter that just sounds bit goofy and doesn't land well with me, it starts grating after a while - call me old-fashioned, but I just want my commentators to be knowledgeable (as Mark is of course) and say it how they see it.

Last night was much more listenable - although watching on my mobile it kept on kicking me out, which was infuriating. I gave up after half an hour and just followed Twitter.

I've got total respect for anyone who volunteers to stick their neck out and do the commentaries, on the whole they do an excellent job.

Bear in mind though that the Alty TV live stream is a far more commercial package which people are ultimately paying for, it's inevitable that feedback is going to be more forthcoming than with Radio Robins. If somebody is paying a tenner a time or even hundreds of pounds over the season they are entitled to say if something isn't right.

It's worth remembering that this has all come about in a relatively short space of time through extraordinary circumstances. I daresay it's still a work in progress, with lots of learns along the way.
Title: Re: Chesterfield Match Thread

I thought last night was the best stream we've had; as good as Wealdstone, which I felt set the standard of the overall package.

A lot of clubs media teams arent trained broadcasters and its a completely different skillset required.

Mark's commentary works for RR where the audience is no doubt pro-Alty and can't see what's going on. I agree the quips don't always land, but that's radio.

On TV, I much prefer Brian and John last night, Brian stopped the overhyping of players and John provided some great insight and knowledge.

Thought Alty TV was excellent last night, quality and commentary were great.

Chuffed we got a home win, against full time direct footballers. Everyone gave 100%, you could see everyone wanted it. Will give us a huge lift in morale for going forwards. Were work in progress, and that we saw last night. Considering how different the team is to what finished the playoffs, its very positive.

Thommo made some excellent saves, Hanks was much improved on previous showings and bagged a brace.

Was parky there last night?

Three years of success had dimmed the memories of how gruelling our tumble down the leagues was for us all.
It's so good to be back at the top level of the pyramid (and not in the bottom three!)

I also think Mark Simpson is a very good commentator. Keeps up to speed well with the play, he adds a touch of quirky humour also. Does his homework on the away team too. All in all a good listen. We do have a pretty good commentary team all-in-all, in what can be a difficult job. They also bear in mind away team fans are also listening, which is more than can be said when we are the away side!
