Title: Potter potters off
Post by: JD on October 28, 2020, 06:20:15 PM
According to the interview with Parkie, like Clayton, couldn't take the drop from f/t to p/t/, which means we will most likely need to recruit from lower levels.

For me this was never going to work.

I wouldn't be looking ex ageing pro for mid, we already have Moult's experience.

We need young, hungry and energetic player. We need to be looking under 23 player in Prem and League 1

Loanees, though they can be difficult to integrate; have to get the right one!

Echoes of that Brian Flynn favourite from the 1994/95 season, Dave Martindale (although he did actually manage to make two appearances).

Apparently he has only been put into the U23s @ Crewe to get game time. They like him!
Would be ideal though!

If that is the case then experience at National level would be much better than Under 23's.
We should go for a 3 month loan. At the end of the day he can be recalled at any time.

Wondered where he was against Hartlepool.

Thought he could do a job in midfield and provide some valuable experience.

Oh well. Though, there are still some decent free agents around....

Loan players do seem to avoid that bugbear of players used to full-time football having to self-discipline to train themselves during the week as they can still train with their clubs.

We do seem to have an issue with signing players who leave either before playing a game or after an incredibly short time. It's bound to happen from time to time, but I feel it's picked up in recent years. Under the current management, we've had Sefton Gonzalez, Anthony Dwyer, Charlie Scott, Josh Langley, Nathan Arnold, Max Clayton and now Potter, off the top of my head.

Fact of football, or do we need to do better?

A few damp squibs as well, e.g. Luke Wall, Lewis Walters.

Have you made some of these up? In all seriousness, I like Parkinson's attitude of Moneyballing, but you can only sign 1/2 broken/undervalued players, and you need a solid squad around them.

By all means sign a Max Clayton if you've two senior strikers, or take a punt on Peers alongside Hulme and another.

But we've got Cisse, Clayton, Peers, Potter who are/were question marks. If you don't get them right like Neil Young, you suffer and players like Hancock/Moult etc.

Fact of football. For a part time non-league club anyway. Players have come and gone quickly for years. Some work, some don’t.

The issue these days is more the big build-up we give everyone when they arrive, making it look a bigger deal than it is. Which I guess is driven by the constant need for ‘content’ in the digital age. But 20 years ago no-one would have mentioned Potter as he came and went.

Would have merited a few lines in the Messenger at most. Which would have been a few lines too many.
