Title: Provisional Playoffs
Post by: HashtagAlty on June 17, 2020, 10:03:05 PM

Teams: York, Boston, Brackley, Altrincham, Chester, Gateshead.

Need a minimum of four teams willing to take part.

🔸6 clubs participate - playoffs as normal with 2 ‘eliminator’ fixtures & then semis
🔸5 clubs participate - the 2 lowest ranked clubs play the eliminator
🔸4 clubs participate - all clubs straight into semis
🔸3 or less participate - playoffs cancelled

Quarter Final and Semi Final at high-placed club
Final at neutral ground.

Games to take place between Saturday 18th July and Friday 31st July.

So if Brackley Chester and Gateshead don’t fancy it , then York stay in NLN.  Any chance of behind the scenes offers to pay for tests coming from York?  Only to be trumped by a better offer from Fylde not to participate?  Watch the rumour mill fly!

Dont understand why York wouldn't get the chance. Travesty

Seems to me that the Chester "City" position is pretty much that if they get money made available to them to take part in the play offs that would not be available to them if they did not participate then they would be perfectly willing to participate. Who knows what skulduggery will go on behind the scenes unless the NL have made provisions to prevent any such "bribes". Like enough they haven't thought it through properly though. Looks rather like the election system over again I'm afraid...

I know some of this was tongue-in-cheek, but any external involvement from other clubs would surely be seen as bringing the game into disrepute and bring with it tough sanctions

So do I have this right

4th v 7th and 5th v 6th................presume 2nd (York) play winners of 5/6 and not 4/7

Yes, that's what I understand, although it changes of course if you don't get six clubs in the playoffs.
Chester have had a successful fundraising campaign, Gateshead are a full-time club, but I am not so sure if Brackley Town can compete while they build a new clubhouse, even if government regulations allow the playoffs to take place.

Thanks

So the situation with 5 clubs as the opening post above

I've heard that Brackley only have 10 players registered now, so that would rule them out.

The lease on York Street expires at the end of the month, so Boston might be unable to fulfil home games.

Still plenty of variables to sort out in that case.

Given Chester have lost Asante already I'd fancy us comfortably over them - although typically this is when they'll decide to turn the form book over.

Playoff teams and National allegedly meeting tomorrow to decided who is and isn't taking part.

Needs four clubs to confirm. York us and two others.

Gateshead will probably be up for it, being full time.  It depends on Chester to a great extent.

The Conference body should just play fair here and foot the bill for everybody, enabling 2 teams to be promoted in the way they should be (one as champions and one as play off winners). How hard would that be for them?

Not privy to the finances but 360k (18 teams at 20k) seeks a lot for the league to fund

I believe that York would play the lowest ranked team still standing, therefore whilst they couldn't play 4, they could play 7.

Ollie Bayliss suggests the step 1 final is at a neutral venue and the step 2 final will be at the home of the highest placed side

I would be surprised if they didn't just stick to the usual routine of neutral venue for Step 1 (no point in Wembley being used I suppose), and home ground of highest team for Step 2 - in fact, they should make life easier for themselves and just hold the Step 1 final at the home of the highest placed team too, I doubt many would be too aggrieved by that.

Assuming all competitors take part, ours would be:

Brackley v Gateshead
Alty v Chester

York v (Alty or Chester)
Boston v (Brackley or Gateshead)

...and then if Gateshead win both their games, we're at home for the final  ;)

Shame for the fans really, because we've definitely got the two biggest crowd draws there to begin with.

Such a shame its behind closed doors as we'd have had a packed Moss Lane for Chester, and York is very accessible compared to Gateshead, Brackley and Boston (should we have progressed).

Starting away to any of the other three would have been soul destroying to be honest - let's just hope we can recoup a lot through streaming revenue

You'd hope if they don't show all games Alty v Chester would be a bigger pull for BT than Brackley v Gateshead. Probably a better infrastructure to film at with two gantries.

Likewise; York v Alty (if we were to get through ) or Chester would be a bigger draw and an easier logistical challenge than Boston v (Brackley or Gateshead)

Am I correct in assuming that if only Brackley duck the play offs (and they might do as I believe they've only got ten players left on the books and work on their ground to pay for) the two lowest placed teams (Chester and gateshead) would play off in the eliminator round and we'd go straight to the semi finals?

In that scenario, it would be a semi-final at Boston...
