Title: Southport - Match Thread
Post by: Mrs Warbouys on October 15, 2019, 11:37:39 AM
Southport - Evs
Draw - 5/2
Alty 13/5

Here’s hoping for a better performance than the league game and a bigger turnout of supporters.

Bought my ticket on their website - if a technophobe like me can cope with it then it must be easy indeed!

Hulme in for peers.

Tough call between Richman and Williams for me. Thought Williams was very good in first half but we miss Richmans' energy and drive.

As I've not seen us lose yet I fully expect at least a draw.

Southport 1-1 Alty. Jones

It will be very tough for us to get a draw, but you never know. Definitely Hulme and Richman back in. We can't be any worse than last time, surely?

As Bri says, surely not play as bad as last time there. We put in a performance at Chester last round, we need more of the same. I would bring Hulme and Ringo in.

4 of us going, come on you Robins.

We must not sit deep like that 1st half in the league. We played into their dire tactics and put ourselves under so much pressure.

JJ and Hemmings on their natural wings and get at them out wide. When Ceesay came on and drove at them they couldn't cope.

Get Dens and White bobbing on too.

Moult is much fitter now so we can afford to get at them.

Richman defo in. Big pitch, need his legs and energy.

Hulme for Peers.

Red and white.

did we sit deep or were we pinned back. their tactics of marking the full backs and the goalkeeper were spot on.

Well we couldn't pass for a start and we played 3 in centre mid so we were very narrow in the first half. Hemmings kept trying to come inside when he had it. We were much better with Hamcock and Ceesay on the pitch.

On Sat I would suggest we keep the pitch wide and have JJ and Hemmings driving at them. We have the added attacking support of Dens who is excellent at overlapping at the right time.

I felt in the league game we were unfit, low confidence and kept putting ball out of play for them to launch throws and crosses into the box. If we need to clear our lines on Sat, go out of play further up the pitch.

I am confident, that's if we play with the mentality of getting at the them  and putting them on the back foot.

Well, we're a bit fukked now.

I'd swap Hancock and Harrop over but I fear the worse

It's difficult to quite put into words how good we were in the 2nd half. I had thought we'd lose, but in all fairness I was at our last match at Haig. I can't see Southport fans watching that sort of 'football' much longer. A big shout for Tom Peers today, who was f****** excellent. Please please please could we use some of the prize money to try and tempt a player like Bamber's Alaister Waddecar to Alty?

Wow, what a win. Hard to single out individuals, but the back 5 were immense.

Didn't fancy it one bit when I saw Peers as low but fair play he more than played his part.

If they're full time they want sacking. A truly awful team to watch, no wonder they home support was non existent.

Still not seen us lose and look forward to receiving a home tie against bye on Monday

Congratulations to Parky for his first visit to the First Round Proper

The win was all the sweeter for being unexpected, especially when Ash Hemmings' sudden departure seemed so demoralising.
A thoroughly deserved win, with special praise for Tom Peers - he is making best use of a little run in the starting XI.

Solid rather than spectacular but an entirely warranted victory nonetheless. Our second goal seemed to deflate them significantly.

Full marks to Hulme for two splendid finishes and a delightful through ball that set up Peers for his goal.

I thought that Jones, Hannigan and Moult all dealt admirably with the inevitable barrage of high balls and long throws.

Southport were abject. Watson's 'style' of football should be consigned back to the Dark Ages where it belongs.

The prospect of having to watch that dross every week is about as appealing as finding yourself stuck in a lift for six hours alongside Mark Francois, Kanye West and Phil Neville.

I'll gladly take that bye into the Second Round but failing that particular outcome, Shrewsbury away would be excellent as I could then coax my dear wife into sponsoring that match against her team.

Well the whole team stepped up to the plate today, started on the front foot and got what we deserved. Fantastic afternoon out.

Brilliant and great away support also, hearing 360 credited to us.

Great performance and result, albeit a bit unexpected but fair play to PP and the team for not becoming doom mongers like quite a few fans did (me included).
Just noticed that's 5 unbeaten and 4 of them away with 2 away wins,.. who'd have thought  ;) :D Plus another £18750 plus gate money less bonuses in the bank.

Well done the Robins!

JACK JOLLY.

I can still hear his voice and he said;-

We are recently unbeaten in red and white.

Ignore the grey sh*te ( later my contribution).

Annnnnnd he also said we are unbeaten with Densmore back in the team.

That is what he said😁

And I completely agree.

Didn’t go yesterday but utterly delighted and pleasantly surprised. I actually also saw the Robins win in the cup as I went to see Carshalton Athletic shock Dagenham & Redbridge 2-1 at their very well appointed Colston Avenue ground. I’d take a Robins vs Robins tie certainly. If it’s away at a FL side at least somewhere that is a good day out-Cambridge, Bristol Rovers, Rochdale all spring to mind.

After racing out the blocks in the first few mins, I thought we struggled for periods in the first half to stop giving away the silly free kicks that Southport were clearly playing for, and our passing game was stifled a bit by the high line Southport held out of possession whenever Thompson had the ball.
But Southport were appalling thankfully, we looked rock solid at the back against their balls into the box, and then we were absolutely clinical when the half-chance did come. The 2nd goal after half time killed the game and I thought we managed out the last 35 minutes very well. To the extent that I thought their consolation at the end flattered them a bit.

Solid at the back, take your chances when they do come, then manage out the game. Pretty much a textbook away performance that.

And has Tom Peers stopped running yet? What a shift!
If his ability matched his endeavour he would be some player.

......... I thought we struggled for periods in the first half to stop giving away the silly free kicks that Southport were clearly playing for......

I agree, but don’t you think that was largely due to yet another incompetent referee? Whilst we should be used to such incompetence at this level I thought this referee exhibited that talent which is thankfully rare - that of bias toward the home team. Time and again we were punished wrongly yet Southport got away unpunished after committing the same alleged indiscretions.

Whilst the ref was bobbins some of the free kicks he awarded were fouls. No doubt Scouseport invited the fouls as that was their best route to a goal, but we really shouldn't be giving away cheap free kicks in dangerous areas.

I thought the wider pitch helped us. We were a lot more mobile than most of the Southport team. I was glad to see there wasn't loads of passing it backwards and forwards across the back row. We definitely make a better job of things when we go all out for the win.
More of the same next week please.

I was interested to see Stockport at York steadfastly avoiding passing the ball back to the goalkeeper, even when under severe pressure. We do take too many chances passing it back.

As Stockport lost perhaps they should beat the press and retained possession

Interesting that they'd actually brought the pitch in a couple of yards each side - presumably to give our wide players less room for manoeuvre. About as successful as anything else they tried yesterday!
Looking ahead, I'd take the bye - some free money & no need to re-arrange another league game - but failing that, for purely selfish personal reasons, I'd like Oldham Pathetic away. To be realistic, anybody at home would do (it's about time we got one!) but we'll probably end up with somewhere unspeakable in the far south.

The examples I'm thinking of the defenders took responsibility for clearing the ball themselves rather than put their goalkeeper under pressure. And unless i'm mistaken the goals they conceded were not caused by poorly struck back passes or being caught in possession.

I love John Laidlar's splendid description of this rather bizarre and ludicrous incident involving the towering Ryan Astles late in yesterday's game:

"Four added minutes were decreed which started with a Port freekick conceded by Johnston on the front edge of the Altrincham box.

The edifice that is Ryan Astles stood menacingly directly in front of Thompson to block his vision as he attempted to line up his defensive wall. Such charmless behaviour proved pointless as the keeper saved the resulting freekick."

Two shots from Jordan and a first time shot from Peers (followed up by a rebound)....

Madness that we had shots and scored! ;D

That is the way the defenders are instructed to play by Phil Parkinson. Launch it long as a last resort.
