I thought I'd progressed us on from the days of blurry photos of crumpled shirts on mannequins, but I guess I was wrong. What a shame.

Long distance away from the original proposed idea(s) but I won't let it spoil a great sentiment.

It has certainly got a lot of good publicity for the club, with the large majority of reaction (but inevitably and unfortunately, not all) being very postive.

The publicity on BBC North West Tonight would have been more worthwhile if the club badge hadn't been nudged out of shot.

Not that I saw the programme, but we would not have been on it at all without this initiative. I wonder if it will bring in any new spectators.

For the record, the original concept was tabled by me and HashtagAlty - Idea was to incorporate the LGBT colours into our own stripes subtly as to not wave what we are doing in the face of the public. Think the current home shirt but small pin stripes of colour in between the red and white.

This is what we’ve ended up with. I love the coverage and knew it would be polarising but I’m so disappointed in the product we’ve ended up with. If you’re going to be the first to do something, smash it out the park. It makes us look amateurish. Just like the half and half shirts did. Just like the remembrance poppy shirts did.

Take this statement somewhat critical having generated both Andy. Half/half shirts have been quite popular in the club shop and the poppy shirt generated quite a substantial figure that was donated to the Royal British Legion.

Disappointing that you're trying to score points on this. The shirt idea was discussed following FvH last February.and the design of the shirt is deliberate in that it is in your face. I'm struggling to think of any other occasion where the club has received so much publicity and so far reaching.

Glad you’ve had a good run off our idea.

Ian, you do a stellar job providing shirts on demand for our wealth of sides and I’ve not got a bad word to say about your service as far as that goes.

That being said, the 1/2 1/2 shirts and poppy shirts were deemed atrocious by many people. I’m literally appointed by the club to gauge reaction and opinion to what we do. Let’s have it right, they weren’t great and neither is this LGBT shirt. I’m annoyed here because I provided the club with mockups based on market research from Manchester Pride employees. It’s far too garish. They wanted a subtle nod to their colours.

I’m not really arsed if I’m burning bridges at this point to be honest. It really is about time the club were given honest feedback. I find the shirt embarrassing but the sentiment, again, is fantastic and the reach has been phenomenal. Just a shame we are being covered with a blurry iPhone photo as opposed to the professional content I am supposed to be providing the club.

OR...we could just celebrate the idea that club - whoever came up with the idea and design - has done something inventive, imaginative, innovative and has given the club some excellent publicity.

I've been knocking this idea round since 2016 with Andrew and I'm greatful for Jordans work with the club finally allowing us a justification to do it other than a PR Angle of good shirt. Without his and Jacquis work alongside the ladies team and other volunteers we wouldn't be making the relevant inroads to even contemplate this kit.

I mention the date because this idea I've wanted to see make the light of day for so long. As someone whose friends have experienced huge homophobia growing up I wanted the club I support to lead the engagement on this topic. It's just fell short of the vision in my head, that's all.

In PR being first matters but only when the execution is right. The shirt design and the images taken could have been stronger. The distribution of the media could have been stronger. Unlike the past this isn't a hindsight thing as I made the point via Andrew (due to no longer being involved with the club) on the best route to market.

Ian I'm sorry to say the shirt falls short of our original design idea which was a more simplified kit however I'm. Not sure if you were ever sent them. If not you've probably just been asked to provide a rainbow shirt.

Photography wise Journalists are far too lazy to source their own content so any content sent in should be provided including content from Jordans work with FvH in the past and general club photography. This would have been converted into video content by major social and media websites.

It's the equiviliant of a third round tie again Charlton. I'm not knocking it but I'd rather be going to Annfield.

Finally I take offence at Jordans comment of this being the most publicity we've got through a campaign. This is simply not true.

The 1/2-1/2 shirt was just a novelty idea for Christmas and the “poppy shirt” was that unpopular that it generated in excess of £2000 for The British Legion when auctioning the team shirts. Regarding this shirt, initial response and on going publicity both for the club and charity has been pretty positive. Perhaps the photo could have been better perhaps, sorry it hasn’t  met your expectations.

Ian, I've just taken a call from Football Focus, expressing their admiration for what we're doing and wanting to discuss how they might cover it, so the press release seems to have generated a bit of interest. I've also had several emails from supporters asking how much the replica shirts will cost to buy and will all sizes, including XL, cost the same. Have you got details I can pass on to them. I've also had, would you believe, two emails from people in the United States, saying they want to buy shirts! Would it be possible to ship them over to the States, do you think, and do you know what the cost would be, roughly?

Hope were not selling them for profit.

The official press release states that:

‘The shirts worn by our players during the game will be sold by auction after the match, and replica kits will be available for sale at the game and via our website, www.altrinchamfc.com.’

Profits from the auction will go to Pride Trust, a LGBT+ youth charity who are rebuilding the LGBT centre in Manchester."

All good stuff.

However, there is no information provided as to where any profits accumulated from the sale of replica shirts will be going.

Any clarification from the club on this issue?

Thanks for that, Ray.

I think that the club would have been better off adopting a consistent tone and donating all proceeds to that LGBT charity though.

Hi John, shirt now available on website club shop

Ian, I don't know if this is your area, but - re the club shop - there is still a lack of non clothes products on the online shop (the scarves, hats, wallet, stationery etc) that makes it more difficult for us exiles to acquire these things.
I mentioned this at the shop when I came to a game in August with my daughter Jennifer, when we each got one of the lined, woolly bobble hats, which are excellent.
I think this reduces the sales especially at Christmas and for birthdays etc

If this is not your area, could you please mention it to someone!
Thanks, Nick

It would be great if we could get this on Sky Sports News and/or (especially) Soccer Saturday as well as I suspect they have a bigger viewership.

Surely, if the Club is to campaign effectively on this issue, then in addition to the occasional attention grabbing event, it should incorporate the rainbow colours permanently into the Club kit. For example, in a diagonal rainbow flash on a bottom segment of the shirt, front to back. Then it would be more than a short lived media hit, but would have a really permanent wide reaching impact. Revolutionary, yes, but are there any rules to stop it?
And, as an added benefit, guess who the BBC would pick for a live FA Cup match: if we ever get that far again, that is.....

The most obvious thing to do would be to have a semi-permanent sleeve patch - although I'm guessing that's where there's rules over what you can and can't have.

We've already got Mornflake across the back, so I suppose you run the risk of the shirt becoming too busy (great cause though it is).

Hi H, apart from extending our reputation as an inclusive club - carrying on the work of the much missed Jacqui Forster and her team - and supporting the extinction of prejudice in football, it is magnificent publicity for the club.

The original concept was based around giving up our stripes in solidarity with the LGBT community for Manchester Pride weekend.

The stripes would start red as our normal kit does before mirroring the rsst of the rainbow.

On a separate note, can't order online. Ian, can you please PM me on FB or can I please order a Medium please. Also Ian the photo you posted alongside the blue keepers kit looks much better.

Great initiative, in spite of the state of the shirt. And the widespread interest generated by the D&I and media teams is highly commendable (although a week later I’m still struggling to comprehend that anyone thought an iPhone photo of AJ wearing a shirt stood in the club office was appropriate for sending out to the national media - despite us having more photographers around the club than ball boys...).

Hopefully the considerable media interest over the next week or so in the run up to the game can be used for the benefit of the club, as well as the fantastic cause it represents, to highlight the shares available for outside investment to come in and take the football club forward. It would be a massive shame if we allowed the spotlight to pass without anyone highlighting the controlling share of the club that is supposedly still for sale, while so many people are listening.

I maintain it would have still had the same coverage had the shirt been slightly tweaked. But my biggest gripe will always be the launch.

We were classified as Viral due to providing decent content by the press association
Title: Re: Latest replica shirt option
Post by: John Edwards on February 18, 2019, 11:18:07 AM
It does get slightly irritating when people make these statements without knowing the facts. The facts are that the initial press release, which was carefully put together and deliberately had the hook of stating that Altrincham were trailblazers as the first club in the world to do this, was sent to all the major media outlets - newspapers, TV, radio, websites, you name it. That hook did the trick. It provoked more comment from media outlets who contacted us than anything else. As for the suggestion that the press association somehow miraculously sparked the media stampede towards The J.Davidson Stadium, let's put that one right. Within hours of the press release being circulated, I'd received two emails from the United States, one saying we had put American sport to shame and another saying they had read about our initiative on a Brazilian website. It was a good two or three days later that a press association reporter contacted me, saying he wanted to do a story on it and could he speak to Bill Waterson. Admittedly, the picture that accompanied the press release could have been better, but we quickly put that right, and there was clearly no detrimental effect whatsoever on the level of interest. We were inundated with requests to film at the ground and conduct interviews throughout the build-up to the game, and the media presence on the day itself was probably unprecedented. I would suggest, therefore, that the launch can't have been too bad.

Sorry can I also say how bloody proud of my club I am?

To everyone involved, thank you - an important message and clearly demonstrates the club has come on leaps and bounds this last couple of years.

For me, the fact people still think we could do even better in certain aspects (not just what happened this weekend) can only be a brilliant thing.
