Title: Southport Match Thread
Post by: One Foot in the Grave on January 17, 2019, 09:33:43 AM
First of two difficult home matches in four days against sides who are in really good nick at the moment. If we're going to be serious playoff contenders, we absolutely have to pick up the six points.

Hopefully the loan striker who was expected by last weekend will turn up. We need to freshen things up.

No prediction from me. I'm just going to grit my teeth and think positive.

An entirely different proposition from the Haig Avenue Southport I'm afraid.

Same starting 11 as at Chorley. Hopefully we can replicate our first half at Chorley but convert chances.

Alty 2-2 Southport. Hulme Hancock

Is it segregated?

We'll need another striker and a change of direction in the goalkeeping department to stand much of a chance here unfortunately. Southport no longer concede goals (aka Stockport) so we will have our work cut out. As things stand, I think we'll struggle and I'd take a draw all day long.
0-2

Need to get back to playing the smooth fast passing game that we were playing pre Xmas.
Do that and we win... Would still like to see us change tact if were struggling.

Alty 2 - 1 Scouse Riviera

Att 1100

Alty 6/5
Draw 13/5
Southport 9/5

Most money going on Southport at present they’ve been backed In some what. Think we are always worth a go at home when odds against

Southport say they are bringing a big following tomorrow. Hopefully the game is organised as well as the stockport fixture and they are in the correct area of the stadium rather than having a big following roaring them on in the home end

Not feeling optimistic about this (or Tuesday). Tossing off the Trophy has had a real impact on momentum. Would be pleased with a draw but suspect a defeat.

It would be astonishing if we went into this game with the same lack of options off the bench as the Chorley game.

And where would such options come from ? There's no apparent movement on the loan front - we could call some of our loanees back, but otherwise we have a bench with all the impact of a soggy tissue.

I am no great fan of Man City or Pep Guardiola, but I do admire the point that City put out very strong teams in recent cup games getting resounding victories just when they were wavering a bit. Good management for me, that.

Yep the Stockport situ worked well.
They won't mind standing in the away end, It will be the same as us going to their place.

If they are coming on mass then segregation is key.

Quite sure that will be no more than 250-300. Away end should be perfectly capable of accommodating them and ensuring they have adequate facilities.

As for the game to be honest I’m expecting a defeat, hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised but they have all the momentum and will doubtless be a big strong physical outfit (a la Chorley) who we might struggle with. Granted, the amount of cash that’s been put in there Watson should have them right up there so it’s no great surprise.

Of course they'll be "a big physical outfit".

Elementary, my dear - Watson !

Excellent performance, against an awful cynical team.
Southport looked sharp, first to the ball and physical in the first half, and I thought we were lucky to go in at 0-0, but a great battling performance in the second half, against an awful team.
So much different to last week when we fell apart in the second half, this week we showed all the fighting qualities you would want from a team.
Not a classic performance, not a great footballing performance, but just hard work.
I though Simon Richman worked really hard, and JJ on the wing just ran and ran. There are a few players who probably aren't playing at their best at the moment, but that should give the team a lift after recent results.

Only one team played football.

How the foul by their number 11 in first half was only a yellow is beyond me.

Tom Hannigan was immense today especially first half when we quite poor.

Superb second half against a very basic and cynical Southport. Wouldn't want to watch them every week.

If we can get 3 points on Tuesday we might well have turned the corner.

The expected typical Watson team. Should have finished with 8. I didn't fancy us at half-time but we mostly bossed the second period. Richman was my MOM but Moult ran him close. Three excellent points.

Biggest win of the season in my opinion.
Certainly in terms of its timing. The psychological benefit is enormous. If we can see Blyth off on Tuesday we're back on course with confidence fully restored.

Yep - the Richman booking was very odd looked like he clearly won the ball from my angle.

Must say Thompson didn't do anything wrong. Not much to do but only kicked it into touch once I recall.

Good result played much better second half

Yes Hannigan was MOM for me, superb player. He’s in the lead for player of the year by a mile at the moment.

Good to hear. Let's see if he can do it for 2 or even 3 games in a row.

Think the lads deserve a lot of credit for going to Lymm for Cryotherapy post match yesterday. Well done to Tommy and the club for sorting this. I think shows real commitment from the players, staff and club looking after there bodies when they could be out on Saturday evening.

Cryotherapy last night was in a chamber and believe it was as low as -150 degrees. Sounds cold to me.

Interesting to see us change it when it clearly wasn't working early on.

I thought TT long kicks for JJ and hulme to chase in between the short goal kicks clearly disrupted the Southport game plan
