Don't want to speculate on potential starting line up on Saturday, I'm sure Phil and Neil know already what that
is and based on last season I have every confidence in their selection.

So pleasing to have squad depth these days - whoever plays at the back, and alongside Moult, I'd be quite happy with. How come Peers was missing on Saturday, by the way?

The only thing I will say, however - Brendan is left-footed isn't he? The traditionalist inside me is dying, however I'd swap him and JJ over, and encourage them to cut in and get as many shots away as possible. We could see from Saturday that Brendan's got a firm shot on him, and I'm sure Jordan will be on any follow-ups like a shot (like Saturday). I think we'd have more joy this way than aiming for the byline.

We’ve had a good pre-season and I’m looking forward to coming up for this one.

Lem widely expected to be amongst the bottom markers so important we set off with a win, bearing in mind the two tough aways which follow this one. I think we should ease past them 2-0 with around 900 with no MCFC or MUFC to compete with this Saturday.

Peers was named against Trafford, but took no part. I'm assuming he tweaked something before kick off there ?

Believe it was his quad. Felt tight in the warm up.

I haven't seen any friendlies but hearing good things about Bannister so maybe start him over White who did struggle at RB last season and became OK at LB, but in my opinion he would never be in front of Hampson.

I hope we can keep players happy. The strength in the squad is really good. We still have Dens and Poole to come back.

I would go for Harrop and Williams for this game. In away games when we know they have a mobile mid I would go with Richman, Williams and Harrop. Moult wins a load of headers but struggles against quicker players.

Not seen Downing play but if PP is going for firepower then maybe he should have kept Miller but I trust his decision making and I feel we have more of a plan B with this squad.

We need to score at least twice, since a goal for Anthony Dwyer is an absolute certainty !

Carrying forward momentum from last season is going to be important if we want to end up with a respectable league finish this season, and so we need to start the season well.

Never any certainties in football, but Leamington at home is a dream opener. I’ll be surprised if Leamington are much better than any of the garbage the same group of players were easily swatting aside last season in the NPL. And so we should be able to knock a few past them and build a bit of confidence to take to Southport for the first real test.

I wouldn't quite put it in the way Matt does, but, even though Anthony Dwyer is bound to score, this is an extremely winnable match to start off with, regardless of the players selected (hopefully, Bannister being one of them, although I somehow doubt he will be).

There will be tougher games to come, but this does give an excellent chance to get some early points, aided by the ongoing momentum from last season.

I'm sure Phil will be guarding against complacency after the way we started last season. Could easily get turned over here of we don't concentrate for 90 minutes.

I would have Sean Miller over Daniels everyday of the week. Daniels played with his head down all first half, lazy and spends a lot of time on the floor. I know he gets fouled but any small contact and he hits the deck and breaks our play. He will not want it on a cold wet Tuesday night, you can see that already.

Mad how we still have Thompson in net. We need a keeper. He will cost us several games.

White RB isn't good enough.

Moult will be too slow . Got away with it in a terrible league last year.

Harrop and Hampson are class. I said previously but I would play Harrop and Williams at home.

For now I would play Peers right and JJ left.

Quality second half by Hulme, often against two centre backs. I think we need changes already.

Sounds all negative but we will be playing 15 teams a lot better than them.

Got to be pleased with that on reflection. Failing to clear the aftermath of of a couple of set pieces cost, but determination, persistence, superior fitness and a will to win ultimately brought it's reward, even if it wasn't quite the one we all hoped for.

We were certainly the better team, but they came to do a job, they had 10 men behind the ball took their chances.
I thought we played much better in the second half when our attacks looked dangerous, in the first half they were much more organised and blocked everything.
Overall pleased with the performance, only negative point was the defence, we looked all over the place on a couple of occasions, I think that will be the main concern for PP.
Great goals from Jordan, and Max look busy as usual.

Much the better team but giving away 2 soft goals doesn't help. Hulme Hancock Goulding and Hampson were class.

Can't imagine there's many worse teams than them in the league, so it's probably 2 points dropped.

Agree with much of the above

Hampson my MotM

2 pts dropped

Incompetent referee did not help

A better start than last season.
Jordan was a class above today.
PP will quickly see where we need to improve.
Should have signed rocca and miller.
Goulding and jones v good.
Need to close down quicker.
By far the better fitter side.

Leamington weren’t as bad as I expected,I think we should give them a bit of credit. A big strong team who will win their fair share of games, especially if they get refs like today’s! Would’ve liked a win but not losing your opening game is the main aim. Above poster very harsh on Daniels who is proven at this level and did ok I thought today, need to stop banging in about Miller who stood out in the worst team we’ve had for decades! I agree that White looks suspect at right back though.

Based on the 2nd half display thought we deserved the 3 pts, but even though Leamington didn't do much in the 2nd half, when they did break they seemed to find gaps on the edge of our area quite easily at times.
Two class finishes by Jordan, and decent performance from Conor Hampson and Max Harrop. If ever Max loses the ball though, too often he seems to give away free kicks trying to get the ball back, picking up cheap booking.
Tend to agree with an earlier comment about Daniels, not sure how hurt he was with some of the challenges on him today. Not the best game for JJ today but he is the sort of player who can produce that bit of magic out of nothing though I wish he was more consistent .
Finally thought the ref was poor today for both teams, gave free kicks for non existent fouls and should have played advantage more rather than blowing up all the time..Overall though a decent enough  start to the season.

Any hopes that refereeing standards would be better in this league were soon doused. Ref was dogsh*t, and I'm sure his so-called assistant on the pop side was some kind of work experience wallah.

I said last week that I thought Daniels looked lazy. Twice today he was beaten in a straight race for the ball. He's a bloody full time player FFS.

Paul Clement responded to mudslinging by Darren Bent today with the comment "It isn't difficult to overlook a player who is overweight and lazy", and I suspect we're in similar territory.

Don't forget we were short of Densmore, Hannigan, Harrison, and Poole. It can only get better.

And we never win on the opening day - not done so for 5 years.

Let's have a decent turnout at Southport on Tuesday - they aren't any great shakes if they lost at Telford.

If Harrison and Hannigan played today we win the game 2-0. Both centre backs didn’t win headers for their goals.

When we get those two back we will be much stronger.

Other than that we were good.

Surely the manager's got to be making changes earlier than 80? We've got a great squad, let's use it.

I am still superstitious about which way we shoot. With bigger crowds this season we need to shoot towards the away end second half. It seems we get better results that way round and makes for a much better atmosphere.

It's one game out of 42. No need to be sounding alarm bells ffs We were by far the fitter side especially in the second half. Hulme was MoM by a mile working tirelessly up front on his own.

I've given up hoping the officials are any good at this level. They are generally all sh*te. (Fact).

Onwards to Scouseport on Tues.

Enjoyed the game, especially the 2nd half. I thought the pace of the first half was a bit flat, possibly down to the heat and 1st game of the season nerves. There were a lot of misplaced passes throughout the team but we got better and stronger as the game went on and I thought we ended the game much the better side. Probably unfair to judge any player after the first game but I didn't see Daniels as an improvement on other players who didn't make the team. I thought Leamington were solid enough without being anything special - probably be one of those teams that's hard to beat but won't win that many either.

Certainly no need for panic or sweeping changes, we'll have a better idea of things after the next 4 games.

I never felt last season that we had many attacking players on the bench who could give us something different. Seemed like it was usually Tom Peers and that was it. Same yesterday. I’m disappointed we haven’t signed a quick striker.

Give the guy a chance. How many of us start a new job and hit our peak in 5 days?. Not only has he got to blend in with the team, the team has to learn about him. For me, the jury is out.  But I will be watching this space.

Agree 100% that we'd have won yesterday had Hannigan and Harrison been playing - we need them back ASAP. Jordan Hulme was mesmerising and they simply couldn't handle him. Similarly, their full back struggled all afternoon with Connor Hampson's pace.
I'm loathe to criticise Daniels. There is a good player there, but he's simply not fit enough yet. I'd like to see Williams and Moult rotate as Harrop and Richman did last season.
Southport will be hard. They may have lost yesterday but they've got a team oozing with talent. If we get some of our first choice defenders back, we have a chance. Otherwise, it could be a long evening...

Ah, but have we? According to one column in the NLP he scored two goals for Kidderminster Harriers yesterday. They came up with an even better work of fiction in their version of the Conference South table. You'd have thought they couldn't get it wrong after just one game [per club, but check it out … It's almost worth the money to read their cock-ups!
