Title: Barwell : Match Thread
Post by: One Foot in the Grave on April 10, 2018, 06:12:48 PM
They're big, they're ugly, and they were in decent form after New Year's day with an unbeaten run of 9 yielding 21 points. They COULD still make the playoffs, but they had 3 straight defeats after that run, tellingly going down 2-0 at Warrington, and 4-1 at Grantham.

Those last two suggest that, with the benefit of a 6 day break, we should get the required win.

Alty 2 (Harrop, Densmore) Barwell 0

Attendance 698

Agree, they will be horrible.

Think Hampson or White will start. No idea what is Harrops' injury but it's clearly nothing major. I'm glad Merrie acquitted himself well and it sounded like he could have easily have scored.

Alty 3-1 Barwell. Hulme (2) Peers. Attn 790

Why the low guesses on attendance? I think we could be pushing 1,000 on Saturday. We've not had less than 800 on a Saturday since September and with only a few games to go, it should bring a few more along.

So I'm not disappointed

Following tonight's games, the highest total any of our opponents can amass is 91. To achieve this Warrington would need 6 straight wins. And they're 28 behind on the goal difference. So if we get another 10 points, it's ours.

Three points from this game would mean just one more win and a draw. Let's get it won.

Warrington have some tough games, away at Farsley and Grantham, so a couple of wins, and we could be there....can’t believe it after watching two seasons of utter awful football. The Barwell game is massive for us.

Win this one, and Buxton......and we can clinch the championship at Shaw Lane with a third straight win. That would feel very apt !

I can only make the Barwell and Hednesford games.
I reckon I'm going to miss the celebrations 😓

We could also win it at buxton if Warrington fail to win at Farsley

I’d be very surprised if Warrington win at Farsley but unless I’ve got it wrong I think even if we win our next two we would still need at least another 2 points to be mathematically sure as Grantham can still get to 88 points (in practice 1 with our very good GD). I suspect it will be wrapped up at either Shaw Lane or possibly more likely Grantham.

Can we just beat Barwell and see where we're at 5-00pm

spot on - and Ashton and Shaw Lane could theoretically reach 87pts (the max we could get by Tuesday) - goal difference wont officially count as a title decider until the final whistle on the last day - you never know Ashton could rack up a couple of 10-0's whilst winning all their remaining games! Interestingly the Football Webpages predicted final table has Grantham finishing 2nd on 82 pts ahead on goal difference from Warrington. Not sure it will be that straight forward but I think it will turn out that 84pts is enough. What a difference a week makes!

No rain forecast from 14:00 today until kick-off tomorrow. Doesn't drop below 5 degrees overnight and it's 10 degrees by 10:00AM tomorrow. Should dry out?

RE covers - am I right in thinking that the ones we borrowed/loaned were from Lancs CCC? If so, with the first-class season starting today, I imagine they've gone back to their owners.
(In passing, excellent news on website re reaching the target; also an update re work on drainage in close season)
RE game - it will be hard work for any number of reasons, but if we could get three points tomorrow the dream scenario (going to Grantham with it all sewn up) remains a possibility. Not counting any chickens, though. Hope one or both of Hampson & White will be available; we desperately need Densmore & Richman in their best positions (at right-back & in midfield respectively).

Talking of pitches, Shaw Lane have once again switched their home game, which was against Lancaster tomorrow to the Giant Axe.
Although the forecast is better next week, I see Athersley are supposed to be at home the day before we are due there.

Well done PP and the team

2 wins away...looked a potential banana skin but with warrington and grantham both winning the lads put in a thoroughly professional performance...

Bring it home lads....

Fair play to barwell, totally went for it for 30 minutes. Once we get ourselves together there was only going to be one winner. Thoroughly professional performance that could have finished 5 or 6. Onwards to Buxton, it’s 30 minutes away let’s hope we get decent backing

wellworth the 6 1/4 hour journey to get here from Devon and what an atmostphere in the first half. Barwell were unlucky not to be ahead before we scored but once Dens got on the score sheet that was it.Good to meet and chat with Ray after all those years of not seeing each other, icing on the cake that.

Probably should have 1 or 2 behind before we scored. Different team once we're in front.

Can't fault anyone today. Special mention to Jobes, who I had pop at last week for poor passing. He made one error today and was superb.

My mom was Moult who as immense for 90 mins.

Yep, agree we were poor out of the traps today. Good strikers would have put us to the sword. We especially miss Ben's height at the back, but Jones did okay. My motm, indeed I'm thinking about voting him player of the season, was Dens. His class absolutely shone through today, how many through balls played on the ground, not just lumped forward?
5 points now. Think it'll be done at Grantham - will be a pleasure to see.

Goal of the season contender from JJ Superb performance from the whole Team,Credit to Barwell gave it a good go in the first half hour.

If Warrington drop points in the week and we beat Buxton we go to Shaw Lane On Thursday and a Victory will crown us Champions (I Think)

Yes - should have been 2 down before we scored and JJ moving over to combine with Dens did the trick - they looked decent until we scored

Nice to meet up with you H. Quite a few years since we played for Alty Albion back in the Mid to late 60s fella . Glad the lads put on a display for your visit. I hope the rest of your visit is as happy as your return to Moss Lane. Take care.

As for the game, after a jittery half hour, normal service was resumed thanks to a Dens goal. That bloke is a class act especially considering his injuries and time out recovering. Glad he got MoM
Keep it going lads

That’s right. And a Warrington draw would effectively do it given our respective goal differences.

Million miles off? If that was the case then I am sure Poole would have scored a lot more. Hancock is more influential in that position than Poole. He gets in better positions and supports Hulme a lot better. Hulme is back scoring. I think Poole is decent but he goes missing in so many games. I would love to see the stats.
If someone mentions about ball retention again then just think... is that ball retention at the right time in games? It is fine when we are 3 or more up but Poole can slow us down.
We look and are more dangerous in this league with Hancock as number 10.

Yep, I’m with Cheadle Hulme Alty on this....Poole is head and shoulders above Hancock as a number 10. I’d also have Max Harrop as a 10 before Josh. Poole is a class act — his ball retention under pressure, his range of passing and his ability to bring others into the game far surpasses Hancock in my opinion.

You do seem to have some kind of Agenda against Poole which I can’t understand as he is a class above. He’s also proved it at a much higher level than this, which we will see the benefit of next season. There are some games where honestly you wouldn’t know Josh is even playing. I’m not having a go — he has a decent goal tally and is a threat with free kicks etc, but he’s not at James Poole level .
