Title: Marine - Match thread (weather, covers)
Post by: Mrs Warbouys on April 01, 2018, 10:51:48 AM
Whilst appreciating its Easter, I was wondering if we were going to take any direct action regarding the forecast bad weather or just leave it in the hands of the gods and Just have a pitch inspection over four hours prior to kick off against a side from 35 minutes down the road?

Alty 2/5
Draw 7/2
Marine 9/2

I assume the covers will be used.

Injuries are really kicking in and not many options to come off the bench to change it.

Alty 2-0 Marine. Hulme peers. Attn 721.

Just for information - according to the league website Marine have no game on Tuesday 24th April, so if the worst comes to the worst weather-wise ...

10:45 inspection.

Any idea why it's so early?

10:45 inspection.

Any idea why it's so early?
Probably so that Anthony Taylor can get to his next engagement.

It'll be off then he's doing the inspection!

I would rather it was off than play on a mud heap. Recent history tells us that soggy pitches and we drop points. We can't cope with boggy pitches
I dont know the guy but I think Anthony Taylor is quite capable of deciding if a pitch is playable or not

He tends to inspect to Premier League standards and has called off some playable pitches in the past. My original point though was why is the pitch inspection so early? We could have an inspection at 12:30 and Marine would still have plenty of time to travel if it's on.

I hear what your saying but would an hour and 45 minutes make much difference in the big scheme of things

Again as a point of information, on Boxing Day the coach was scheduled to leave Sale at 12.10 and the ground 20 minutes later. As it happened we were held back as long as possible (which turned out to be 40 minutes) in view of a late inspection at around 1.15. A 12.30 inspection would have created the same problem. A number of independent travellers would also have set off significantly earlier than 12.30 and some will have to do so tomorrow to ensure arriving in good time for a 3 p.m. kick-off given public transport's limitations on a Bank Holiday. All this suggests that an inspection well before noon is advisable, so I for one am grateful that the club have organised things the way they have.

I suspect the inspection has been organised as a formality, and pretty much expect the game to be postponed minutes after 10:45.

As long as it's okay for you eh?

If the weather in Alty is anything like Oldham then a 2:55 pitch inspection wouldn't make a difference.

Been raining heavily since early hours here in Alty. Walked past the ground an hour ago .  Standing water in various parts of the ground. In my opinion Game will be off. Still raining heavily as I write this.

I'm over the other side of the hills at the moment and would be truly astonished if Thursday's scheduled match at Shaw took place. At least, it'll give injured players time to recover.

Tranmere's game is off and their pitch is much better than Alty's. Most of the injured are unlikely to return this season.

I'm struggling to recall the last instance of Alty's Easter Monday fixture being postponed.

roytonmike: anything in your archives?

My archives tend not to include postponed games. I do remember travelling to Scarborough on an April Saturday to find the game off & ending up at a very muddy Turnbull Ground to watch Whitby v Guiseley; I have a feeling that might have been an Easter Saturday, but I can't recall an Easter Monday game not happening.

I don't really understand this raising money for covers. If we are being told that the problem lies in poor drainage and a high water table, then I fail to see the point in raising money for covers. Obviously covers would help protect against frost, but most of our postponements are down to a waterlogged pitch.

Genuinely don't understand, am I missing something?

I think it was said on Thursday that the drains aren’t the problem, it’s that the water isn’t working its way through the pitch as it should in places. So presumably if we could prevent water getting into the pitch, that would help greatly.

the way you put it there sounds exactly like the drains aren't working properly. water is collecting down the pop side and at worst in the golf road corner. it can't go anywhere once its there. that's a drainage issue. and its nothing new. i would suggest exactly the same amount of rain fell on warrington's pitch and it's obvious it was able to drain away.

Whether it's a high water table or whether the water cannot disperse it undoubtedly is a drainage problem.

There is a gully runs between the old Welman House site and the Allotments. It is dug to a lower level than our playing surface. Therefore it is a question of how long does it take for rainfall to perculate down through the soil.

In my opinion the covers that we currently have are woven plastic and therefore not rain proof. Even if they were, at some point you would have to roll back the covers and then the water would need to go somewhere.

Best bet is to have a zipwire from the back of the main stand to the radio robins "nest". Drape some plastic sheeting over it sposored by Travis Perkins and peg it out. Hey Presto an indoor stadium.Maybe one sheet of plastic wouldn't be big enough but wait a minute, we are in the glue league!
