Title: Stalybridge Celtic (A) - Match Thread
Post by: JTH on September 27, 2017, 12:38:50 PM
Only one topic to start - last night's attendance at the Badger's Nest - 191. Let's turn this into a home game.

Same team but Short for Bembo-Leta or Dens and JJ for Peers, who has done very well, but we need JJ in the team.

Why change a winning team? Bembo was arguably MoM last night

I do agree but I just feel Bembo-Leta has a few mistakes in him. Good at going forward but his defensive positioning does not fill me with confidence. However fair point and it is a 3rd clean sheet.
I suppose I would always select my strongest available team and that would include Short and JJ.
Hard one as Peers has done well too and for me he would be the one to give way for JJ. Hancock and Hulme are playing out of their skin. Poole just class.
God knows how we will accommodate Miller but what a great position to be in. We also have Richman and soon Taylor knocking on the door for centre mid.
This team excites me.

Bembo-Leta will be up for it against the club that released him. Simply has to start. And if JJ is available I'd start him on the bench. More of the same please !

Possibly Short for Dens, and JJ for Peers - but no more than that.

Fine line between keeping a winning team and keeping things fresh.

Steve Burr says he's quietly confident about Saturday following Celtic's 1-0 win over Halesowen which saw the sides swap places, the Midlands club now propping up the table:-

Greg Wilkinson is unavailable as he has been invited to a wedding to which Dens possibly hasn't.

Wilko was only a sub on Tuesday, so he's not a big miss for them.

Bembo-Leta was my MOM on Tuesday. Good athlete and has got pace. Good nights viewing. We had a good 3 x 30 minutes (I haven't mentioned the word half hour) ha! Road works on M6 going home dampened the night! Never been to Stalybridge. Whats it like? SBL

Stalybridge is one of the best grounds outside the football league, in a picturesque setting also. And you are correct about those roadworks, dreadful journey back

Big local derby for both teams this. I suspect they are probably better than their position suggests and will be very keen to put one over us, as we've done them at their place the last couple of times. Looking ahead if we do take the points sets us up very nicely for 2 very winnable home games after. Already the Stourbridge game on 14/10 is looking very important.

Stourbridge play Alfreton in the Cup tomorrow; the 4QR is on 14/10. so don't take it for granted that our League game will happen as planned. The same of course goes for next Tuesday - Nantwich are at home to Nuneaton tomorrow & that could well be a draw. Sorry to be a drag by providing a fixture reality check! As for tomorrow - the pitch will no doubt (dis)benefit from the current heavy rain but here's hoping for three points.

I actually looked at tomorrow's FA Cup games a few minutes ago while sorting out my weekend bets. And I've got Stourbridge to win and Nantwich to draw.

On the evidence of the season's betting so far, our two fixtures should be safe.

Always enjoyed going to Stalybridge, nice ground, never any trouble and this is my first away game of the season. Looking forward to it and hopefully, 3 points. Should be a good game.

Their supporters seem supremely confident ahead of today. In truth we should be outnumbering them on the terraces and beating them on the pitch, let's have it.

Ive said it before, when our lads play to there potential there isn't a team in this league we should fear.
A performance like last Tues and we will win comfortably.

3-0 Alty
Att 666

I’ve been about 4 times in the last few years and always parked up on the hill residential area up Old Road opposite the ground

4-0 to Alty, don’t think anywhere near 666, more like 444

Not a walkover by any means.

2-1 (Hulme, Hancock)

Attendance 385 (it's pissing down in Stalybridge).

3-0 Alty. Hulme, Poole and Harrison. 500+ crowd.

Not felt this confident since Abbey Hey away.

Both 1-0 HT.  Since Stourbridge have playing against 9 men from the 26th minute, the 14th October fixture looks doubtful.

Frustrating but doubtless conditions didn't help. Still if you can't win then don't lose and now 4 clean sheets on the bounce-wonder when we last did that. Sets us up nicely for 2 home games and hopefully a big gate for NLD next Saturday.

For all the deft touches and obvious superiority, we lacked the urgency needed to win today.  I wonder whether there was a degree of over-confidence ahead of the game. As someone said after the 1-0 last week, there are times when winning ugly is what is required; today was a case in point.  Lots of pretty football on show but too much lateral play and slow ball.  Staly never looked like scoring but, despite dominating the midfield, neither did we.  Definitely two points gone begging.

Agreed. Stlybridge are poor and although any point away from home is good I feel this is two points dropped.

Today was the old Alty problem of letting poor opposition drag us down to their level. If we'd taken that gilt edged chance straight from the kick off it might have made a difference. We were far the better side, yet I just knew we wouldn't score.

On the credit side, a fourth consecutive clean sheet isn't to be sneezed at....and I thought Tom Hannigan was outstanding today.

Annoying result today but at least we didn't lose and seem to have developed a strong foundation to build from. I tend to agree that Dens and Short should be our first choice full backs. Every time I have seen Bembo-Leto he has looked like he has a mistake in him.
Good to see  Hannigan playing well. If he stays fit he will be an asset to us this season.

The conditions were awful. If the pitch had been in the state it was at 4-45 at 3-00 it may not have been played.

If Hancock scores the sitter inside the 1st minute we probably score 6.

Aside from Hulme, Harrison and Hannigan (the new tripleH) no one came out with many positives.

I'd have put Harrop on instead of Amiss.

2 points dropped, yes but another clean sheet.

A largely dreadful and forgettable game. The only real point of significance was overhearing a conversation about Sean Miller scoring a hat trick for the reserves.

Sadly counted for nothing as the game was abandoned. No match ball, insufficient game time.

The best positive about this game was the clean sheet, and also the news re Sean Miller getting a hat-trick. I too thought Hannigan played well in that game. I also felt Stalybridge dished out some nasty fouls and I was worried about Hannigan in that sending off. He has had much game time now and is showing us the asset he has become. Sean Miller must be now more or less ready to come back, wonder if he will be sub on Tuesday? Worth a punt Phil!

There are days we will have when a home side digs in with their defence and plays for a draw. Felt Stalybridge played ok in defence, but were unambitious. Any team that celebrates a 0-0 draw the way they did proves my point. That said, we have come a long way from last season and now teams are trying to find ways of stemming the flow of football from us. Makes a change from being laughed at. I was disappointed we didn't win but there again, there will be times when nothing we do seems right. We just had a slight off day but then again did not concede. The 4 games we haven't conceded was the best since 2003 apparently according to the website.

You win some, you lose some; we just need to keep our focus right, and concentrate on winning games and our finishing, rather than being in a situation where we know before a game what to do, then our form deserts us. Two teams always want to get a result, and this was a Derby. We have had worse results at Bower Fold; but bear in mind the conditions also made it difficult. We are still fifth!

There seems to be two types of opposition and match we will face in this league.

The farsley's hednesford's wittons where teams want to play us at football and don't press that much which we seem to be able to dominate and finish these teams of very clinically..

And the Matlock's Granthams and Stalybridge who look poor but press and press and don't give the alty players time on the ball at all forcing us to repeatedly give the ball away sometimes very cheaply....these matches tend to be a toss up...we could have beaten matlock, should have beaten Stalybridge and should have lost to grantham.

An early goal is crucial but we are struggling against these organised sides and PP needs a plan B I think as these games will define wether we win the league...no good beating witton and then losing to matlock or Workington etc (I accept Workington were by all accounts a decent outfit).

Really was frustrating watching (for example) Richman chase for 30 yards and win a difficult challenge in the celtic half only for the ball to be given away cheaply seconds later and we were under pressure needlessly when we should have been having the attack...

Thought Hannigan and Harrison were outstanding Saturday and Thompson had a good game too....

Excellent post sums it up perfectly for me.  I too think we are good quality most of the time it really does depend on the opposition and putting away that one early chance
