.....,but no. No thank you. You are not the man to lead us forward. Your record is atrocious, both as an assistant and a manager. Respect to you as a player, but please walk away from this car crash now. It's not even funny.

Any footballer worth his salt would never turn the chance down to manage his former club, his professional integrity and drive wouldn't allow it. It's not worked and for me wasn't the answer in December or January, we tossed it off too early. Fair play to Matt for giving it a go, but two wins in nineteen regardless of how the dressing room is, isn't good enough. Brackley were on the beach and barely broke sweat but still gave us a hiding. In mitigation we have had a lot of injuries, but for me we need a complete reboot. That goes from the very top of the club. We need a manager with experience, ideally of unibond football. We'll have the budget to cherry pick players, we need the contacts, know how and nous to deploy them correctly.

Agree with every word. Your post should be required reading for Matt and he should withdraw his application.

Unfortunately he's a shoo-in.

Spot on.
Sections of yesterday's issue of the Robins Review read like a propaganda campaign to have Matt Doughty crowned as our next manager but I'm afraid that the statistics just don't back up all the rhetoric.
Yesterday constituted our fourth consecutive defeat and Matt Doughty's record in charge in league fixtures is simply nowhere near good enough to justify his appointment as Alty's manager for the pivotal 2017/18 season:
Played: 19;
Won: 2;
Drawn: 4;
Lost: 13;
Goals scored: 13;
Goals conceded: 33;
Points gained: 10 out of a possible total of 57.

Wonder if the manager will be apointed this week ?The closing date for applications was last monday so maybe some confirmation shorty.

Matt D. is not the man to lead us next season.

Hopefully it won't be announced until the end of the season because we've appointed a highly rated manager already in a job.

The galvanisation of the squad is a myth, still terrible. fresh start, fresh eyes needed

Another appalling piece of journalism here from John Edwards
Where does the Salford manager give Doughty his backing to be Alty boss? He doesn't thats where. Nowhere does he mention either Doughty or our managerial vacancy.
Also is it really acceptable for the offical club press officer to be issuing biased propaganda towards one candidate, when we're supposed to be having an open an transparent application process here?
Is this North Korea?
The full interview with the Salford manager is here https://twitter.com/salfordcityfc/status/848481453751115777, yes Edwards just lifted it off twitter as well

I think this is what will happen.

I do find it odd that in lots of interviews that it keeps being discussed
Just focus on the job in hand would be my advice
-
No way should Matt be considered for the job, his record as assistant and manager is rubbish. I know he took over a really poor squad, low on confidence etc but he hasn't done enough to justify the job on a permanent basis. I would however, consider Robbie Lawton as the number 1.
-
I can't believe Doughty is even being considered. We need a fresh face, not someone indoctrinated in an ever growing era of abject failure.

Please see the above as its bang on the cash.

I agree entirely.
Does this squad galvanisation involve saying things like I'm not being funny but the Damian Reeves of 4 years ago would've scored that?
I don't know Reeves well enough, he may be hard work or a poor trainer or something. Whatever frankly. What I do know is that he slapped in a 30 yarder after coming off the bench v Curzon and made a lovely run and finish v Chorley and a swivel and turn in the FA cup v whoever it was and a poachers goal v Harrogate.
So whatever deterioration he has had has been over the last 4 months not the last 4 years.
I'm not trying to open up a new debate but just to observe that whoever MD thinks has been galvanised aren't the right players.
I think getting balls into the six yard box for Reeves would've been a far more effective priority than trying to teach Cyrus to pass or convince Hannigan he's not injured

Why? Doughty/Lawton has been dismal; just not good enough. If Doughty is nowhere near suitable then having Lawton in the running is barmy. Lawton's own record as assistant has been rubbish so if that counts against Doughty it should count against him too.
Fresh approach needed. A manager who is used to winning matches would be a start.

Agree with that too Bob

Just a feeling. I've been impressed with the way that Robbie has handled himself and spoken. I know that he wont be considered for the job without Matt, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him make a decent managerial career somewhere in the future.

He can handle himself in an interview and says the right things. If that was all it took we'd be top of the league or still in the conference national.
We need a proven winner not another talker.
-
Fair play, we need results , just hope we find the right man. Jim, Matt and Neil Tolson were dreadful in interviews by the way. Lee was ok, Robbie is very good.
-
Wouldn't even be considered anywhere else with a record like that as Cult shows us.
Don't blame him for giving it a go at all and I don't doubt he had given his all under very trying circumstances with injuries etc. However this whole brand new concept of not actually getting any points but applauding the fact that we used to be dead sh*t and he pushed us on to being quite sh*t is as odd as this season as a whole.
Coupled with the fact he personally told us that on day one when he came in to help Tolson out that he knew we'd go down (should have had a word with the chairman maybe?) or when as assistant to Clive Dunn he just put the cones out whilst Rome burned it doesn't bode well.
Thanks for sticking with it and there is nothing to say he won't make it somewhere else but not now and not here.

Matt is not a manager his performance has proved that!
