Title: Idiots guide to northern premier league football

Heres a brief guide to what changes culturally and other wise we will encounter next season.

FA CUP

The Football Association's competitions department usually announce the draws for the early rounds of the competitions as well as details of exemptions and a list of accepted clubs in the first week of July. So it wi be a draw of for example Altrincham v the winner of a preliminary round tie

NPL Clubs enter the competition in the FA Cup's first qualifying round on Saturday 10 September with rounds following every two weeks up to and including the first round proper on Saturday 5 November.

FA Trophy

NPL Clubs enter in the first qualifying round on Saturday 29 October with the remaining two qualifying rounds and the first round following fortnightly - the latter being played on Saturday 10 December.

League

The league season will likely start on Saturday 12th August. Fixtures aren't usually released until around Friday 15th July as there needs to be a wait for football league and conference fixtures to be announced.

Blyth spartans will be promoted to the conference north this week and will be joined by one of
Nantwich
Stourbridge
Spennymoor
Warrington
Whitby
Buxton
Matlock
Grantham
Workington

Going the other way will be
Skelmersdale, Ilkeston and two from

Sutton Coldfield
Frickley
Corby
Mickleover
Halesowen

Coming up will be two from

Farsley

I'll add more later.

Thanks for the enlightenment, potentially a lot of cup games there. I assume then there will be more midweek games for successful teams. Hopefully ourselves.

The 'coming up' lists are quite dismal reading. Sure I'll wake up one day and realise it was all a dream and we're really playing Tranmere and Leyton Orient next season.

We will, of course, also play Stalybridge and possibly Gainsborough again. Not Worcester as they' would go into South.

Similarly, if Gainsborough DO go down, the most southerly club already in the glue league would have to move. That's Stourbridge.....or if THEY win the playoffs it'd be Halesowen.

Lots of twists and turns yet !

As far as the promotion scenario goes, in both North and South divisions the top two clubs are both well clear of the play off pack. It seems clear that we'll  definitely play one or other of :

Farsley/Lancaster
Shaw Lane/Witton

In both cases, the current leaders are shown first......and the second placed clubs can overtake them if they win their one game in hand.

A significant number of these clubs/villages aren't served by Rail, and a cursory glance at the NPL forum last night saw people calling each other scabs and arguing over the miners strike, in April 2017. What on earth have we been dragged in it.

Another thing to consider is that a few teams share with other sports so that has to be considered when fixtures are drawn up.
Mickleover, Stourbridge and Matlock all share with cricket, Grantham with athletics and Shaw Lane with rugby union (and have lots of postponements), while Newcastle Town play in a velodrome. There may be others I have forgotten.
I can't see us playing AFC Rushden and Diamonds next season, even if they sneak through the playoffs, as they are groundsharing at Kempston, near Bedford, next season, so will surely head south.

Been to watch Rushden a few times this season including against Witton and Spalding who could also come up. Witton were excellent and a couple of their players should be seriously looked at by us this summer. Their team would beat ours at the moment I reckon.

The others ive seen including Spalding and Diamonds are very poor but very physical.

I was just about to mention the Integro Cup whatever the hell that is!

Their manager might have been a good shout too, but what incentive is there for him to apply now when his team is about to potentially earn promotion?

Do the club actually want lots of other applicants though or will it make it easier for them to palm off a couple of joke applicants and give the job to the current duo, would  be less controversial than when they could have strong applicants in the summer? Struggling to see why else we would not do it in the summer when everybody is available!

I believe this was the compromise made at the last board meeting. Rowley wanted to confirm Doughty as manager for next season straight away without inviting applications, but the other board members disagreed wanting a fair and transparent contest and they debated it for over 5 hours, what we see was the outcome

Mate, it isn't necessary to say Rowley out on every thread or even starting new ones. Just clutters the threads up and imo lessens impact of people who make that particular point. I'm pretty certain he doesn't read the forum now either tbh.

You know this isn't a get Grahame Rowley out of Alty forum. It's the Alty fans forum for reasonable discussion, albeit most (including me) think he should pass on the reigns - and some who don't.

Like I couldn't be arsed saying to Spring, I think you've got to let people read through posts pointing out we're playing Mickleover Sports in a league game next season and come to their own conclusions...

Excellent research.

A quick look on some of the more local sides websites we could play next season (Ashton, Nantwich, Warrington and Marine) suggests that the standard adult admission fee is £10 with no difference between stands and terraces. The board therefore need to think very carefully about prices as I imagine many will bin off home games next season for away days anyway, making the prices too high will just be an additional incentive not to bother.

But we need a budget to attract the players we need to (hopefully) come straight back up. I dont see it being as low as a tenner on the gate, and there will need to be some clever thinking. Some quick ideas: Half season tickets, ten match tickets for £100, parent and child in for £13, free soft drink in the csh in the hope the parents will have a drink too.

They were worse, we proved that and then went and signed one of their strikers. You know like when BPA were as bad as us and we went and signed their second choice left back. We've simply not had good enough playing and management staff to compete in the Conf north for the entire season.

Shaw Lane beat Witton Albion on Tuesday, so that should mean we are bound to go there while Witton are left to try to "achieve" promotion through the playoffs.
Who would have thought, when we beat Barnsley in the Cup last season that we would be playing a league match in the town so soon, but against the town's second team?

Workington should seal their playoff spot when they entertain already relegated Ilkeston tomorrow.

Nantwich would seal the remaining place if they win away at Halesowen on Thursday.....and they'll maybe need that since they finish at Stourbridge on Saturday.

Had no idea that Spennymoor were big spenders this year (until just told).

My only memory of Spennymoor away was there being more people in the social club than at the match the last time I went as I think Newcastle were on the dodgy satellite.

My basis was more on the selfish 'What's an easier and better day out from London' a contest which Stourbridge would win hands down but yes Spennymoor having a few quid is another reason to want them out of the way for next season.

Witton will be the home side and took 4 points off them this season so odds on for our first league games against them for donkeys next season. To be fair that wouldn't be a terrible Christmas derby if it transpired.

Did we beat them 4-0 that year? That was Spennymoor United who folded mid-season a few years later, and then Evenwood Town of the Northern League moved into the vacant ground and steadily rose up through the leagues, seemingly with some money behind them, after changing their name to SpennymoorTown.

Spennymoor going bust helped me win about £250 that season. When I had Southport(conference nth) and Hyde(NPL) to win their divisions. It paid for my season ticket for the following season.

I'd agree with you to an extent. And we certainly haven't "stolen" their manager.
But there's a big difference between being ruthless for success, and getting yourself into a position (however it has happened) where our ex-manager is the one informing the Nantwich players and his mates are the ones making the public announcement for us on social media - ahead of Nantwich's play off game at Spennymoor.

But how does Matt D know?

Have the club told him? Was he aware from those in NL/the club who else applied?

Do the players knows and it's been passed on that way.

MD is club staff and should behave himself a bit better. If he cant see the perfectly sound reasoning to give someone else the job then he's got his head in the sand and clearly wet behind the ears. He's had more than a fair chance to keep us in the league and if his record continues like this he's going to be feeling let down by his employers quite a lot if anyone gives him a job.

All of this. AFC's Board advertised the job and people applied for it. As such, it's at their discretion when they make the appointment, inform the applicants of the decision and then make it public. Looks to me like the Board were looking to get someone in as close to the end of the season as possible to enable any new manager to make offers to players quickly. As it's 99% certain it is Phil Parkinson I'm presuming the Board were waiting on the results of Nantwich's play off campaign before making any public announcements.

In the meantime and in my view correctly, they informed MD and RL they were unsuccessful. I think we'd all agree it would be unfair to ask them to hang on for a fortnight not knowing.  Almost inevitably the NW non league grapevine has leaked the news, but however he found out, MD's subsequent actions have done little to enhance his reputation which I doubt will have gone unnoticed by the boards of other clubs.

Or...

The man is willing to leave when a perceived bigger club flutters its eyelids. So this time next year when we're on the cusp of going up, Oldham have a word / come knocking and off he goes leaving us to screw up and fail to go up.

Just playing devils advocate here.

Don't mention that fella, he attracts some odd people.

There is a case for introducing a management window, as there is for players. Yes, I know rules vary among the various leagues but  there are rules and regs on players so why not on managers?

Again, jus' saying.

Hi Gents - Witton Albion FC supporter here.

I know it's a bitter pill to swallow but you are where you are in football. We've just had a very difficult season in the Evostick Division One South with endless travelling across to Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire & local derbies in Staffordshire so to be playing again in the Premier Division is brilliant.

We're delighted to be playing against Alty again after all these years with some great Cheshire derbies to look forward to also. Whitby Town is a great day/weekend out & there are lots of other teams in the Division that you'll enjoy visiting, particularly Witton!!. With so many Cheshire derbies it's almost a throwback to the old Cheshire League days [for those of you who are over 60 like me!] & fondly remember a 5-5 derby in the 1960s where your legend Jackie Swindells scoring at least three. I used to ref @ Moss Lane & was lining on Alty v Lincoln City when you won 3-2 in the 90s.

Phil Parkinson's done well for Nantwich Town & it'll be interesting to see who follows him from there.

HI GE.

You're correct in where we are, and based on last season we deserve it. Looking forward as you say to more local matches. Have a good summer break and hopefully both teams will be raring to go, come August 12th

We have LESS local matches. Only 4 opponents within 25 miles, and 10 Midlands clubs.

You are Mister G Edgeley...and I claim my £10!

That 5-5 draw between Alty and Witton Albion in the Cheshire County League occurred at Moss Lane on Saturday, 14th October 1967.

By all accounts, Alty were leading 5-2 with around 10 minutes to play but an injury to the Robins' goalkeeper Brian Quigley restricted his mobility and Witton promptly capitalised by scoring three goals in quick succession.

The Alty goalscorers included Les Campbell, Johnny Worth and (inevitably) Jackie Swindells.

Trevor Ogden appears to have scored at least two of Witton's goals on that afternoon.

I thought I didn't remember this game but thanks to Google I confirmed that it was the very date I gave in to my school mate and went to Maine Road to watch City beat Wolves 2-0. The experience from the middle of the Kippax Stand was unbelievable and I continued to watch City for the rest of the season and, as those of you with long memories will recall, they won the First Division!
