Title: Second Season Syndrome
Post by: Timperley The Best on April 25, 2015, 07:42:58 PM
Need to avoid this happening at all cost , probably need  3 or 4 quality new players in my opinion , probably a  strong league next season.

For me Sinnott, Gillespie and Wilkinson should all be released and im not sure how many seasons Cavanagh's got left in him so might need another centre mid. We need another quality striker and more cover in defence.

The quality striker is the priority.....we've never replaced Wally.

Honestly, Reeves is one of those once in a generation players and I shudder to think where we might be without him. It would be nice to take some of the pressure of scoring off him.
I worry that we will be worked out, today Braintree had clearly doubled up on Clee and if not him then who?

Quite right Jim as we discussed on the train, we need to freshen the squad up for next season in quite a significant way, don't forget our average gate was over 1250, can't see we had budgeted for that plus more income from the CSH in the close season. We don't need to go gung ho but there must be a few quid more available I'd hope. The CSH debt worries me though.

We also want players who are fit and able to last 90 mins
I'm prepared for the flak but Perry has to be released

It's a tough one with Perry. He's a very likeable guy but I don't think he's quite good enough. It's very likely that Gillespie won't be here next season and if Perry also goes that leaves us with one striker and there's no guarantee that we can get replacements being part timers

I don't think the argument re Kyle Perry has changed from last close season. When he comes on as a sub he rarely lets us down, scores the odd goal, offer something different and occasionally (eg Macc away) completely changes the game. Unfortunately when he does that, he starts the next game and then the question over his fitness and whether he can last 90 mins becomes relevant. He's still a useful player to have on the bench IMHO

Perry has done better than I expected but it's about trying to move forward

If the club are serious about maintaining our prem lge status and with a smaller squad than most then their isn't room for anyone who can't put in a full shift.  It will be harder next season and we will need a squad capable to provide it. We have shown in the final games of this campaign that our thin squad were shattered, fortunately we had the points in the bag

I would keep Kyle. When he comes on as sub he offers us something different and if nothing else, forces defenders to think differently than they did for the last 70 mins of so. Guisley play off was a classic example.

Would only keep him as an 'impact' sub - but that means having two quality strikers ahead of him - he has done ok this season but he  cannot fulfil the role of regular starter if we are to do ok next season

As already said it is about moving forward

I think the impact striker approach was the plan for this season - with Gillespie and Reeves as front 2.

I know Gillespie didn't work out as planned - but the logic seemed to be there

Perry is the only player who somehow manages to look heavier and slower at the end of the season than he did during the pre-season friendlies.

Whilst in general that's true Barry, the spectacle of the Perry's goal at Halifax was something to behold. He seemed to be treading water as he found himself in the clear, having sh*t himself in so doing. Hordes of galloping defenders were catching him up as he tripped over his own feet. But what a wonder goal!

Well judging by his tweet ten minutes ago. It looks like it might be farewell to Kyle

If so, thanks for all you've done Kyle you weren't everybody's cup of tea but I suspect you've been used to that. While I think this is the right move I think you're a top lad and you can look back on your time at Alty with a lot more pride than some players we've had in recent years. Best of luck for the future.
