Title: Forty years ago today: Everton 1 v Altrincham 1
Post by: TheCultOfIanTunnacliffe on January 04, 2015, 06:51:53 PM

One for those of us of a certain vintage who happen to wander these pages.

I've only just realised that on this date four decades ago, I was watching Alty secure that famous draw at Goodison Park in the FA Cup Third Round.

Definitely an evening for raising a glass to John Hughes et al.

I remember that day very well. Great goal by John Hughes but pity he uncharacteristically missed a second half sitter which would have made it 2-0.
Probably the worse ground I have ever been on for poor crowd control with Alty fans split up all over the place.
When the draw was made Everton were top of the old First Division and we were top of the NLP.
Sadly non-league Wimbledon made the back page headline the next day with a 1-0 at bottom of Division 1, Burnley.

Thanks for posting that Barry. You've made me realise that my eldest is not having any old birthday on 16th, but he's 40. I managed to persuade my wife to watch the Everton replay at Old Trafford. It was her first game and she was 8 and a half months pregnant!

I didn't manage to get her to any other games.  >:(

Wow. Fourty years.
I watched it from the director's box with a bunch of school mates - Noel White's son was in our class!
A brilliant day in so many ways.

Thanks for the reminder Cult.

On the drive home from Nashville, Tennessee this afternoon (how's that for a commute?) it suddenly hit me that Everton was 40 years ago today.  And of all the games I've seen since there haven't been too many that have had as much incident or been as sheerly gripping as that one.  The last 15 minutes or so after they equalized seemed like an eternity.  After this length of time memory has a nasty way of playing tricks.  Can anyone confirm that Peter Eales actually did collect a couple of beer bottles that had sailed out from among the Everton supporters behind his goal in the first half and put them on the penalty spot?  Or did I just dream that?  And how many times did Everton hit the woodwork before John Hughes scored?

I was there and Everton were lucky not to be the first top flight team to have been knocked out of the cup on their own ground by a non league team.

I was 14 at the time and me and my Dad were taken by our next door neighbour Walter Baskerville who was Alty through and through. We ended up in the terracing next to the Gladys Street and were the only Alty fans in there. It was pretty scary I can tell you. Didnt Connolly their star striker break his leg in the game? Train to OT for the replay with 30 odd thousand Alty (United) fans lol great memories

He did indeed, although he didn't endear himself too much to the Gladwys Street by casually smoking a cigar whilst strolling around the penalty area pre-match. Given he used to entertain himself and everyone else by doing handstands when the ball was down the other end on a regular basis it wasn't a great surprise. Still a sign of changed times, remember Everton's response to the bottle throwing? - fitting a finer meshed netting to the goals to stop them from hitting opposing keepers in the future...

I remember signs going up after saying "Please Refrain from Throwing Missiles". How quaint. I went with my dad, my mate and some mate of my dad's, we sat in the top tier of that big stand, there were escalators inside. I remember when JH scored it took a couple of seconds to sink in. He always looks offside in any of the photos I've seen of the goal.

The Alty supporters' ticket allocation for that match at Goodison Park did seem somewhat random, to say the least.

I watched the game from the seats in a stand to the side of the Gwladys Street End and I recall various bumptious home fans advising my Dad that Everton would hit double figures against us.

Strangely, that so-called famous Scouse wit miraculously deserted them when John Hughes tucked that ball past Dai Davies to put Alty 1-0 up and the atmosphere swiftly became rather intimidating.

I also recall Peter Eales picking up a beer bottle that had been thrown at him from the home fans in the Gwladys Street End.

Everton's Scottish left winger John Connolly broke his leg that afternoon following a tackle from John Davison.

I still don't quite know how I survived that afternoon - I actually watched the game from within the Gwladys Street End & probably owe my still being around after we scored to the fact that the mate I was standing with was 6ft5 & well proportioned with it!

NO and tickets were only needed for seats. What happened was that Everton fans were allowed into the away end even before we got there and others followed us into the ground. On seeing this some Alty fans left and went to other parts of the ground. There was one big fat old police officer inside the ground who was adamant that he was going to show both sets of fans that this was HIS territory and refused to segregate or allow Alty fans to stand together. Then as more Alty fans arrived the Scouse backed off but came back later. And this was before the game when we were also being taunted with 10-0 defeat threats!  There would not have been a problem had Alty fans been allowed to stand together. Even the muppet on the tanoy was intimidating and offensive, although he changed his tune at half time. Probably the worse ground I have been on and dreadful policing.

I was there with dad, my big brother and my uncle roy....not sure if my younger brother made it......

I can remember the lovely Leitch stands with blue criss crosses and the semi circular gap behind the goals.....I thought it was a lovely ground and can still see it today.

I would have been 6!!

One abiding memory of that afternoon is the patronising PA system announcer playing Silence Is Golden by The Tremeloes during the pre-match 'entertainment' and dedicating it to all the Alty supporters.

Mildly amusing, I suppose, but rather more emblematic of just how condescending Everton were to Alty on that day and indicative of just how much they had underestimated Roy Rees' fine team.

I remember that PA bloke being an utter prat and how it wound up my 12 year old self, my dad just laughed at it/him. I'm remembering more now, we parked a bit away and paid some scallies to "mind the car" then walked through Stanley Park, I had a red and white barred scarf around my wrist as was the fashion, it attracted a bit of attention although generally good humoured. The scarf was hidden on my dad's instructions on the way out after. Kenny got some stick from the scousers outside as he was his usual self although probably naively innocent then, I remember worrying someone was going to have a go at him. I also remember the programme being free with admission which explains why I have or did have at least two. I remember the Liverpool fans arriving outside by bus as we came out, chanting "Altrincham", were the kick offs staggered? It was a great day indeed.

On the evidence of the respective match programmes, it looks like both games kicked off at 3.00pm:

They did both kick off at 3 but our match finished slightly later (perhaps because of broken leg?).

I do remember Liverpool fans asking us the score on the way back to the car and stuck in traffic around the grounds and becoming their best mates on telling them the score!

The Liverpool Echo's perspective (from an article published in 2012):

1975 FA Cup 3rd round Everton FC 1 Altrincham 1 Replay Altrincham 0 Everton FC 2

“IT’S wet and windy with a deep depression over Bellefield,” joked Billy Bingham with press-men on the eve of Everton’s third round tie in 1975.

He was referring to Everton’s injury list. But barely 24 hours later he might have been referring to Everton’s FA Cup fortunes.

Against Northern Premier League Altrincham, Everton came as close as they ever had to suffering the shame of being knocked out by a non-league side. It was almost the shock of the season. Everton went into the third round tie one point off the top of the table – but after a superb autumn, Billy Bingham’s Blues had wobbled as Christmas approached. To add to the inconsistent form, Bingham revealed an injury list on the Friday – which would worsen the next day. “Steve Seargeant is out,” he revealed. “Martin Dobson will not play, John Hurst is not fit and Mick Buckley cannot be risked.”

As a result Ken McNaught made his Blues debut – and hit the crossbar within 10 minutes – while Gary Jones hit the post 10 minutes later. But a nine minute spell threatened to wreck Everton’s season. Saturday’s Daily Post had warned: “30-goal John Can Be A Danger” – and John Hughes did, as Horace Yates had warned: “slip one past them.”

Perhaps shaken by the goal, winger Gary Jones then lost his composure, swung a right hook at Morris – which connected – and was sent off, then a minute before half-time a “vicious looking tackle by Davison” left John Connolly with a leg broken in two places and he was stretchered out of Everton’s season.

“The Everton and Altrincham players looked at each other threateningly,” reported Ken Lawrence “and the match never recovered.”

Everton’s 10-men equalised 20 minutes from time, skipper Dave Clements hammering a shot into the roof of the net after Dave Irving had been tripped. With a full complement of 11 players for the replay, staged at Old Trafford, Everton won comfortably with goals by Lyons and Latchford.

But Altrincham did get their top flight scalp 11 years later, when Birmingham City were dispatched in the third round. For an hour at Goodison Park one wintry afternoon in 1975 it was very nearly Everton.

While the Connolly broken leg obviously earned the most attention, it should be remembered that Alty captain Lennie Dickinson missed the entire second half (if memory serves) with concussion I think it was.  And he was having a really good game.  Might have made the difference.

incredible day out for a 13 year old there was a free coach if you collected vouchers from games over xmas . during the match this coach was moved by the police and we couldnt find it after the match leaving a gang of under 14 year olds to have bottles thrown at us from stanley park such was the friendlyness of the lovely scouse comedians . it did go quiet though when we scored .

The muppett on the PA system was incredible. Stupid jokes that had been told a thousand times before, but obviously outside Merseydive. Not only were his jokes not funny, he was insulting and ridiculing. The funniest part though was his response when Everton players took to the field for the second half. His speech was a desperate 'a call to arms' to all Evertonians to get behind their team now in their time of most need!!! He had Alty fans in stitches laughing. However I still have nightmares of the sitter that Johnny Hughes missed in the second half at 1-0. I wont go into the incidents after the match when the coaches had been moved.

I quite like the idea that a professional scouser was, in fact, born in Wales.  It reminds me of scene in "Cockney Ken" in Viz, when he goes to hospital and the nurse "outs" him as being born in Aberystwyth. "You sadistic NHS bastard" I remember him replying.
