Title: Alty website revamp

Looks very very impressive. Easy to use and very clear. Smashing job done by all involved.

Couldnt agree more...excellent work.

On your next stage of development...could you consider removing the pop-up element? (And just navigate the site using the one browser window?)

Not a negative point i'd stress...just a suggestion regarding user experience.

Looks good , just one suggestion , on the admission prices ,can we not make it clearer about the age the senior Concessionary prices start , and that students get a reduction to .

Agree. Having a fixed menu bar at the top should negate the need to have new windows/tabs opening for every link clicked.

Again I agree, keep it to 1 tab/window.
On first looking a very impressive site, congrats to all concerned.
Not tried the site on my phone yet though.
I'll be going for the full news as my saved page, but can see the usefullness of the highlights page for those who just want a quick update.

shocking waste of time and money. Bring back the old website or i will get the Chinese to hack it and bring down Alty FC with it.

Good job guys, looks very nice and clean.

I like it. A lot of people in non-league regard JL's site one of the best, but it lacked in appearance as looking like being stuck in the 90's. This change could lead to John getting the national recogition that is deserved.

I'm not the only one to have this issue then. I love our site, the content is the best in non-league, however technology has advanced far further than even this new design takes into account.

<geek talk>Also a problem we may have soon with this design is the nature of the code. A lot of the content uses old tags, such as <font color="red"> which is deprecated in html 4.01 a version of html which is 4th generation away from the current standards. we could end up loosing alot of functionality from the site within a few browser updates http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_font_color.asp.</geek talk>

Nope! Don't understand a word of it!

One question: when will the shop be up & running?

Sorry to be negative but design of community hall is poor and looks cheap and the site has go backwards, too much going on and where is alty tv? The most important icon!

I prefer this new layout to the old one. More concise and the new icons are good. I'm pleased that it seems more commercially minded too.

That said I agree about the pop ups and it doesn't work as well on my phone. But a positive move on the whole.

I don't know about that, I'm only working on the radio robins side of things I'm afraid. You will have to ask alty snapper about the shop!

over 18s don't look if easily offended section required...Laidlar out!

The only thing I don't like is the multiple windows it opens.....I actually preferred the old layout and possibly the designer has tried to improve upon perfection?

It is more modern and up to date looking....can we have a hero of the week where james lawrie is?.....first nomination mad-dog?

But then again I'm an old fuddy duddy who thinks we should still be wearing red shorts and round shirt collars!!!!

loving the new layout, a long over due update if i'm honest.

One slight snag is the 1st team fixtures tab. It shows links to youth and womens fixtures which seems nonsensical as you have already qualified which team you are after in the previous link. Also if it was me i'd have all the fixtures together in a big list rather than splitting them up between league, cup and friendly (but thats just a personal preference)

I really liked the old version, but I am sure this updated version will grow on me.  I can see a lot of sense in leaving the adverts static - much more prominent. As a bit of a nerd I read all the news, so there are extra clicks for me, but what's an extra click here and there?

The people that run the websites, Alty TV etc. are beacons of Altrincham FC in what can be a bleak, unforgiving non-Altrincham FC world, and for that I thank you all.

Well done to all concerned.

I said it before, there are plenty of league clubs that would be glad to have a club website and access to match commentaries  as good as ours

Agreed, but the totally destructive comments from Anti Tease really are pathetic.  Most people can accept constructive criticism but to simply type "New version is atrocious" with no specific statements about why it's atrocious is pathetic. I can understand why abuse would follow.

Exactly. At the moment I must confess I'm not a fan of the new site at all. It looks messy and confusing to me compared to the old one but give it a month or two and I'm sure it'll grow
on people as they start to get used to it.

It is, and has always been, the best non-league (and league?) website!

Couple of personal gripes though...

1) the new site doesn't seem to work too well on mobile devices
2) not sure there's a need to open a new tab/window as often

Other than that, fantastic job!

I'm not too sure about the update. I think everyone can agree that the content has always been superb and head and shoulders above anything else out there. The 'rustic' design was always part of its charm and at least it was functional. This new design feels too busy and less user friendly. If anything modern web design is about stripping things back to basics so this feels a bit retrograde. The pop-ups are hopefully something that can easily be fixed.

Anyway, this is starting to sound far too like a complaint when all I really want to say is a HUGE thanks to all the people who make our website, radio and video offerings so good - and without being paid!

Whilst  I find it difficult to criticise anything that John Laidlar is involved in, I reluctantly have to say that the new website is not iphone friendly and for that reason I would prefer we went back to the old format. Scrolling from bottom to top is a pain and the thing jumps in and
out of PC and smartphone format at will. Unreliable.

The old website worked well. The new website looks more much up to date and streamlined.

What I don't get though is that to click on for example fixtures you have to hover over two or three drop downs and then click fixtures. By far the quickest way is to click fixtures on the old webpage format and it works for Iphones and Ipads.

I now don't check the webpage from my phone at all. Maybe I might start to check it again now the old style clicks are back.

As a suggestion: if navigating the site is frustrating you, just bookmark http://www.altrinchamfc.co.uk/news.htm (and the other pages you always check) and use that rather than going to the homepage? That makes it a 1 click job as before to get to what you want and once you're on the page, the format is essentially the same as before...

Title: Re: Alty website revamp
Post by: Amsterdam Alty on July 23, 2013, 05:04:54 PM
The number one issue from my point of view is the lack of thought put into mobile users. We are a mobile user orientated generation now. My main site averages 4000 views per month, of which about 25% are either phone or tablet visitors.

Lets assume, since I don't have access to the analytic's for the club site that it is the same. We've written off 25% of visitors. Not a good thing by any stretch of the imagination.

There are solutions out there for the navigation. http://responsivenavigation.net/ gives some easily implementable ideas. while keeping the new design.

It's all good and well bookmarking the link but on a 320 pixel wide screen space is at a premium. The two side bars are taking up unecessary space which is not needed, or could be better placed on a mobile version.

Another issue which the new site holds is the small viewport. This is a screenshot of my monitor:

Look how much of the screen is wasted. I do have a high resolution that is true but look how much information (and that's the most important thing about this site, information) we could be viewing. The old site was fine for this.

The design is miles better aesthetically from the old site. The old site had a massive header with absolutely no relavent information before the fold (the bit you see on your screen without scrolling) however it was set to 100% width which is why it suited for not only large screens but small screens as well.

I love our sites content. It is the number one source for non league news, not just Altrincham FC news. We just need to put some usability thinking into the site. When we are making such massive strides off the pitch with the community program, increasing local awareness, big new sponsorship deals, the excellent media coverage we provide from the alty TV & Radio robins teams we need to be making sure we don't fail to provide the best experience on what is often the first point of contact for people looking for information about Altrincham FC.

What annoys me are the people who don't like it but don't say anything about it, which some may call the happy clappers brigade

I wouldn't let such things annoy you.  You've made your feelings pretty clear on it I think.

It's a work in progress and people don't like change.

How many times have facebook changed the way things are shown and there has been campaigns to change it back to how it was and people swearing to never use it again.  In a month no one remembers what it was like previously

It needs to be fixed for mobiles phones (and made wider as Longsden has said) but it is still does the job, all be in in a round about way at the moment certainly for mobile users.

I now cannot get the Small Format News at all on my iPhone and, as explained by someone else, it cannot be selected from the drop-down menu under "Home" as it can on the PC. I'm therefore going blind (or is that something else?) :P

So until the new site is made iPhone friendly could Small Format News be put as a link in the new left-hand column please?

cheers
