Title: You may think I'm an old fuddy duddy but....
Post by: JackSwindells No 1 Fan on May 01, 2013, 05:44:54 PM
Flares at Football matches are not good. Dangerous.

I hope that we don't all have to be searched at Brackley after last night.

What is the AFc's position on flares?

I think the clubs stance is umchanged. Flares are banned as they always have been and the owner was ejected.

The chances of Brackley stewards body searching any of our more mature fans would be very high.

I think it was a one-off. I've been watching Alty for 9 years now and I don't think I've ever seen a flare before (in the home end). It's like most things, brilliant for a special occasion but would become tedious if done all the time. I'd assume that the club probably don't allow them but am not too sure on that one. For the record, i think it added brilliantly to the atmosphere at that point last night. We'd just scored the equaliser and were starting to gain the upper hand in the game giving us the momentum. As you say, flares can be dangerous but as it was Moss Lane's first ever playoff match I think I could probably let it slide, just this once.

There a banned item rule no 6 on the club's ground safety regulations http://www.altrinchamfc.co.uk/altygroundregs.pdf

Must admit last night just seemed right but i don't like them i think i'm the same as Phil the club have a very proud safety record

OK being on a banned list BUT it is too late as soon as one is lit... damage is done... a bit like trying to get toothpaste back into the tube!

So what should have happened then?

They can't do much more than throw the lad out can they?

The flare last night was brilliant! And the people saying it's bad etc... Can you honestly say you didn't enjoy it? Everyone loved it!

Though it is dangerous in the wrong hands/someone who doesn't know what's they're doing. Don't expect any more flares anytime soon, I would allow it if we had a PL team in FA Cup at moss lane but nothing else...

Did the owner (I know who it was) really get thrown out?

I don't think we should go overboard on this.  It happened, nobody hurt.  Perhaps the club should restate the policy in the next match programme (hopefully on the 12th of May).

I cant believe we're argueing over this tbh.

It happened. It wont be happening again for a long time (unless the playoff final goes on till 8pm due to us and Halifax being awful at penalties.)

Bogman, the lad got chucked out, he may or may not be banned for future games.... it being on the ground regulations means plenty of people who use them face conqsequences such as the lad who got a custodial sentence.

We won the first ever PO game at moss lane 2-1 with a wonder strike. The atmosphere was amazing (far better than burton).

Shall we talk about Moult's goal and the way the lads rallied around?

The Conference produce the programme for the final.
I dont see this as a negative thread as nothing could take the shine of a great - NO FANTASTIC night we had at Moss Lane last night.
It Happened - It shouldnt have - but it did. Lets move on to saturday.
Most of last night (i thought flare was a bad idea too) was another example of why so many of us love our club so much and do what we do to make it the awesome club it is.
Should be a cracker on Saturday. Cant wait.

Let's just be clear... the suggestions on here that repeating this could ever be acceptable are wrong... you can't have rules which are OK to waive just because it is a big game..

Yes, last night's result was brilliant but celebrating dangerous behaviour condones it... Chucking the offender out was right, my point about "getting toothpaste back in the tube" aimed to highlight the fact that once it is lit that it is even more dangerous to try and stop it in a crowded place whereas stewards can intervene on almost all other problems..

Had the same thing happened in the Main Stand we could have had another Bradford, but I guess that many of those on here do not remember that disaster.

I've had my say and yes, it is time to look forward to Saturday.

Exactly what I thought of when I saw the smoke curling under the lip of stand and out into the air.

It was a tad eyre. Most of the people were suffocated or melted in their seats.

Well quite, but it WASNT done in the main stand, probably for the reason that the reception it would have had there would not be like it was on the pop side and, more to the fact, it would have burnt the thing down. I dont remember the Bradford fire as I wasn't even born when it happened but it doesn't stop me from knowing about it. The same goes for many on here.

The fact of the matter is that it was in the pop side, the lad holding it was holding it aloft, not waving it around or brandishing it in peoples faces. Surprised as you may be by this, flares come with instructions and not everyone that buys them are lunatics or hooligans. I personally think this has been overhyped and an element of scaremongering is going on by people that didn't like it. For me people use the "danger" element to shout down people that want to have a but of fun because they associate flares with hooligans. Its like giving matches to kids. The educated ones know how to use then safely and in a controlled way. As long as you can control their usage then its fine.

This was used in a controlled manner and for me there was no problem and its been blown massively out of proportion.

it wasn't.

someone let off a flare, stewards did there job and ejected him

I think this is spot on, mate.

Honestly... If it was known how much it would overshadow such a good game then I don't think it would have even been arranged in the first place.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what is undeniably a dangerous item.

Lets get some perspective in this.

I would rather stand next to a bloke with flare once in every blue moon, rather than some pissed up pain in the arse,

We should be celebrating a great game played in front of a great crowd with a great goal scored by Alty at the death.

OK, the flare shouldnt have been there, it was, it didnt harm anybody and its gone now

Get over it ffs

We need to do the forum perspective thing again. 1500 + alty fans there, only 20 post on here, most thought it was a bit risky but looked class.

A couple of people have complained, I'm sure a few more did at the match but I have spoke to 50 who thought (as a one off) it looked amazing.

I think a look at my friends facebook pictures would back that up.

The flare has now become legend and will live in history as an iconic moment.

The organisers of it came on here to say it was a one off and they had no plans to repeat it. It seemed to have been lit and held in a very controlled way, I was about 6 feet away from it and felt totally comfortable.....I am sure the lads would not have even considered lighting it in the wooden main stand.

As a one off it was superb and fitting on a memorable night....I have not seen anyone suggesting it was done again...I would not want it to become regular as it would become tedious, ultra-ish and a bit like playing music after scoring.

It is and has been made clear flares are banned at Moss Lane....not seen anyone suggesting this should be changed.

I am sure Bogman has never broken speeding rules to get home or to work on time, the consequences of which could be extremely servere with severed heads and wounded babies?

God I'm so excited about Saturday now!....and beyond!

I dont remember this. This is a racist anti-Irish song that the cowards that support England started singing, but only after the ceasfire. Its ironic that they can get away with this but there is big reaction (and rightly so) when morons make monkey noises (except AFC Wimbledon fans who say they are Seal noises).

I thought Aldershot was a great ground to visit. Just around the corner from the railway station. They opened a bar in the away section, although it is small and dingy, it had a TV. I found their fans and stewards very friendly. I distinctly remember one of their stewards praising Alty fans on the East Bank after the first Conference game we played there.
